Chapter 30

"Dammit!!!" Rochelle screamed when Nick's phone kept ringing busy. "Who the hell is he talking to? Shouldn't a rich kid like him have call waiting or something?" she was near hysterics by then. She had to get out of that house, but she had no way. She'd been stupid and left her car at Nick's house. She finally realized that he had given her his cell number and she dug it out from the bottom of her bag. She dialed it quickly and it rang but no one answerd. She decided to just let in ring in case Nick heard it, he just couldn't find it or something.

AJ was driving home from Kate's when he heard a ringing sound in his car. "What the hell?" he muttered. He checked his own cell, which was in his pocket. "It's not mine." He pulled into the nearest parking lot and searched for the culprit as it kept ringing. He finally found it on the back seat where Nick had ridden on their way to lunch the other day. "Way to go, Nick." he mumbled as he flipped it open. "Hello?"

"Nick?!?!?" Rochelle screamed into the phone.

"Umm...no, this is AJ. Nick left his phone in my car. Who is this?"

"It's Rochelle. I really need to get a hold of Nick!"

"Have you tried him at home?"

"I've been trying for the last 20 minutes, but it's busy."

"Are you ok? You don't sound too good."

"No! I need him to come pick me up at home. I can't stay here!"

"Alright- how about I come get you?"

"Please? I really appreciate this, AJ! Can you hurry?" she asked.

"Just give me directions, and I'll be there as soon as I can." She gave him directions and AJ told her he'd be there in about 25 minutes.

After she hung up with AJ, she heard her mom pull into the garage. "God, I hope Dad's passed out by now or something." she prayed. She waited until she knew it was safe and met her mom at the top of the stairs, a bruise already forming on her face.

"Shelly! What happened to you?" she asked, alarmed and examining her daughter's face.

"I'm fine mom. Where did you go?"

"Did that Nick kid do this to you?"

"Nick? No! Nick would never lay a hand on me!" she said, immediately.

Her mother searched her eyes. "Then who did it?" she asked, very quietly.

Rochelle averted her eyes and looked at the very interesting carpet. "Have you umm...seen Dad since you came home?"

"He was asleep on the couch but I didn't go in there or anything, why do you...." her mother gasped. "You mean, your father did this to you?!?"

Rochelle nodded her head very slightly. "Oh my God! Baby, I'm so sorry! This is all my fault..."

"Don't say that, mom. It's not anyone's fault but his own." Her mother led her into the bedroom and sat her down on the bed, resting Rochelle's head in her lap as she gently played with her hair.

"I think we need to have a nice long talk." her mother said. "What happened tonight when you got home?"

"Well, he was really drunk and I brought Nick in with me and he got upset, saying I was nothing but a tramp like you just because I had stayed in Nick's guest room. He kept saying I was going to end up like you, and I just lost it. I yelled back and him and told him I couldn't wait to see him go, and then he hit me and walked away." Rochelle surprised herself at how calmly she managed to tell the story.

Her mother was quiet for awhile before she spoke. "Honey, I'm so sorry. Your father had no right to say that to you, nor should he have hit you. But I need to tell you why he said those things about me being a tramp." She paused and swallowed before continuing. "Shelly, I've been having an affair."

Rochelle bolted up and bore holes in her mother with her eyes. "What?!?! With who? For how long? How could you do this to Daddy?"

"Shelly, calm down. I don't know how all of this happened, it just did. Your father and I fell out of love years ago. I met a man named Ken at work about three months ago and he took me out to dinner and things just went from there. Your father only found out about it yesterday. I never ment to hurt anyone."

"What do you mean you never meant to hurt anyone? You've been lying to us for three months and it never crossed your mind what you were doing? How could you be so selfish? How could you do this to me?"

"Shelly- please! Don't do this. I know you're upset but it had nothing to do with you."

"You know, you guys disgust me. This entire family freaking disgusts me! I'm glad you're leaving!" Rochelle was screaming at her mother, who just sat there and took it, knowing that while her daughter didn't completely mean these things, she had every right to be upset.

"Maybe it would be a good idea if you stayed with one of your friends for awhile, then." her mother suggested.

"Yeah, I think that's a great idea. Would you please leave me alone now?" she said, looking away from her mother.

"Whatever you want, Shelly. Just remember that I love you." and she shut the door behind her.

Rochelle threw some clothes and things she would need in a duffel bag and waited for AJ, who would be there in about ten more minutes. She was sitting on her window ledge thinking when she heard a car honking in the driveway. Assuming it was AJ, she ran downstairs and opened the door, only to see her mother with a large suitcase getting into a car with some man she assumed was Ken. Her mother didn't see Rochelle watching and they drove off. Rochelle just sat on the front porch and waited for AJ.
