Chapter 27

That same night, something happened between Rochelle and Nick that no one ever thought would happen. Rochelle still felt wierd staying in Nick's house, especially when she woke up on his couch to find that he had already left for the day and hadn't wanted to wake her. He left a note saying she was more than welcome to stay there and he wanted to take her out later that evening when he got back.

She was sitting on the couch watching Dirty Dancing when he got home and threw his keys down on the table. "Hey! What's up?" he said.

"Not much. What have you been up to all day?"

"Nothing exciting. Studio work."

"Sure sounds exciting to me!" she said.

"Yeah, well, not when you do it so much! It just becomes part of your normal routine, something you have to do if you wanna sell millions of records!"

"Yeah, I suppose you would have to! So, what are we doing tonight? Cuz I'm went home and got some more clothes to change into so I would be prepared for anything!"

"I was thinking a moonlight picnic on a nice secluded section of the beach just you and me!"

"Nick, that sounds really nice! Just let me go grab a few things and I'll be ready to go, ok?"

"Yeah, ok, take your time. The ocean isn't going anywhere!" he smiled.

Rochelle kept on her pants and baby blue three-quarter sleeve shirt, grabbed a sweater, threw on some light make-up, sprayed some body mist and grabbed her bag. She walked into the kitchen where Nick was finishing packing up the food in a basket.

"All ready?" he asked.

"Sure am! What all did you put in there?"

"Chicken salad sandwhiches, potato chips, baked beans, carrot sticks, and fudge brownies for dessert!"

"Good thing I'm hungry!" she teased.

"What? I was supposed to pack for you too?" he said rather coyly.

"Shut up Carter!"

"Ok, let's go!" He led the way to his car, loaded the basket and blankets in the back and hopped in, holding his Pure Disco cd.

"Pure Disco?" Rochelle asked.

"Hey- disco is good to cruise to- especially when you're going to the beach!" Rochelle gave him a strange look. "Just trust me?"

"Ok, if you say so!" she laughed.

They drove for about thirty minutes before they arrived at the place Nick had planned on. There was, of course, a full moon shining brightly over the ocean that was calm and peaceful that night. Nick chose his spot and laid the blankets down on the sand and then set the basket in the middle of it.

"Have a seat!" he said. Rochelle sat down next to him and they gazed out into the ocean, each burried in their own thoughts.

"Nick, you've been great the last few days and I haven't thanked you enough for getting me out of that house for a few days."

"Hey, it's no trouble. What are friends for?"

"Is that all we are? Just friends?" she asked, quietly.

"What do you want us to be?"

"Honestly Nick, I don't know. I mean, it's been awhile since I've been in a serious relationship. I usually just date guys and nothing much ever comes out of it. I've never dated a guy friend of mine before. Part of me wants a relationship with you so badly while the other part of me wants you to just be my friend because I could really use some good, supportive friends right now and I'd be afraid a relationship would ruin that all, ya know?"

Nick looked at her, listening intently to what she was saying. "I do understand. It's nothing I haven't already thought of. Rochelle, I'd like to try a relationship with you, but I can handle just being good friends if that's what you want or you aren't ready for anything more. I'm going to leave this in your hands, ok?"

"Nick...I..." Rochelle didn't know what to say.

"You don't have to make up your mind right now. Your heart will lead you to the right answers in time, ok?"

"Thanks Nick." Rochelle leaned over and gave him a hug. "Now let's eat, I'm famished!"

They set out the food and devoured it rather quickly before they decided to take a walk along the shore together. They took off their shoes and socks, rolled up the legs of their pants and set out together, hand in hand. They walked along, collecting unique shells and talking about their lives and past experiences.

When they returned to the blanket, Nick sat down and stretched his legs out in front of him. Rochelle sat between them and leaned against his chest, listening to his breathing and his strong heart beat. He wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on her shoulder. "Comfy?" he asked.

"Sure am. Isn't the ocean beautiful?" she asked.

"I've seen things more beautiful." he whispered. She turned her head and found that he was staring at her. Her breath caught in her throat as he leaned in and gently brushed his lips against hers. He came back again, claiming her lips. She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around his neck as they continued to kiss. When they pulled away breathless, Rochelle shifted so she was looking at him.

"Nick, I think I have my answer now."

"Yeah, and....." he prompted her.

"I think we should stay friends...."

Nick sighed and moved away from her.
