Love in a Movie Theater

Chapter 23

After AJ left, Julie and Brian sat on the couch watching tv.

"What do you want to do tonight, Bri?"

"I dunno. Got any ideas?"

"Ummm.....I'm drawing a blank here. Wanna see a movie?"

"Sure. What's playing?" he asked.

"Toy Story 2, Bicentenial Man, Man on the Moon which isn't a very good movie I thought, Stewart Little, Deuce Bigalow..."

"Let's go see Deuce! That movie looks funny."

"Ok. Come on- let's head over there and I'll get us in for free just because I work there!"

Brian drove them to the theater and Julie got permission from the manager to see the movie. They sat together in the back and enjoyed the movie. The whole time, Julie had this wierd feeling that something was bothering Brian but she couldn't figure out what it was. He seemed like he was upset with her or something because he just wasn't being himself around her. Throughout the whole movie she kept thinking back to see if she'd done anything to upset him, but she couldn't think of anything.

AJ picked Kate up at seven and took her to a fancy restaurant for dinner.

"So, how was your day?" she asked.

"Oh, it was fine. What did you do all day?"

"Nothing much. I took a nice hot bath this morning, did my Tae Bo tapes to work out..."

"You do Tae Bo?" he looked shocked.

"Yeah, Julie and Rochelle and I usually do it together but I just felt like working out. Why, is that strange or something?"

"No, I guess not. I just means I have to remember that you know Tae Bo and could use it on me if I pissed you off or something." he laughed.

"Nah- I've never used it on anyone before, except for my wall but that was an accident. My mom was so mad that I kicked a whole in the wall of her living room! I had to pay to fix it."

"So, what do you do? I mean, are you in school, do you work?"

"I go to college but I haven't picked a major yet. Right now I'm working as a hostess for Planet Hollywood. It's a sucky job but it pays good money."

"Yeah, and it won't be forever! You've got plenty of time in your life to decide what you want to do with it."

"Easy for you to say, you had your career all set when you were like, what, 14 or 15?"

"Well, yeah but that doesn't mean I can't change what I do later on in my life. In ten years if I want to, I could get a job as a car salesman. I'm not stuck in one job forever. That's all I was trying to say."

"Ok, I understand."

Kate and AJ spend the night just talking and getting to know each other. They learned some pretty intimate details about each other's lifes and by the time AJ took her home, they already had plans to go out twice next week.

He walked her to her front door and gave her a sweet kiss.

"Bye Kate. I had a really good time with you tonight. I'll call you tomorrow, ok?"

"That's fine with me! I had fun too. Thanks so much! Bye!" she called as he walked back to his car.

That same evening, Rochelle was having a terrible night because her parents were fighting pretty loudly and she just couldn't take it anymore. She almost wished they would hurry up with the divorce and move out just so she wouldn't have to listen to them anymore. When the shouting reached a new level, she picked up the phone to call Nick.

"Hi, is Nick there?" she asked, hoping that the shouts couldn't be heard over the phone.

"This is Nick."

"Nick, it's Rochelle." she said.

"Oh, hi Shelly! I was hoping you'd call. Is everything alright, you sound upset?"

"No, not really. My parents are fighting right now. I'm surprised you can't hear them." she said.

"Is that what that is? I thought you had the tv up too loud or something. Are you ok?"

"No, I'm not ok with this. I'm 20 years old and never before have my parents acted like this with each other until this year. I'm not used to it. It's hard for me to watch them throw almost 30 years of marriage down the tubes like this." she said.

"It's ok Shell. Sometimes things change, no matter how much we want them to stay the same. Do you want to get out of there? You could come over to my place and crash for the night one of the guest rooms." he offered.

"One of the guest rooms? How many do you have?"

"Umm..four I think. But think about it- I live in a house all by myself! I've got plenty of extra room!"

"I don't know, Nick." Rochelle hesitated. After all, she barely knew the guy and he was already inviting her to spend the night in his house.

"Don't worry- I'm not going to try anything stupid with you. I just wanted to help you like I promised I would. Come on- we can order tons of pizza and watch movies all night long! I'll even let you pick the first one!"

Rochelle could hear her parents start to argue about her and she knew she had to leave. "Yeah, ok, I'll come over. Can you give me directions? I get lost easily."

Nick gave her directions to her house and Rochelle hung up and packed up a few things, writing a note to her parents so she wouldn't have to interrupt their petty arguements and left it on her bed before heading out to Nick's house.

Nothing much happened between them that night, Rochelle talked to Nick some more about her parents and he was very understanding and supportive, given the fact that he had never experienced something like that before in his family. Then they watched movies until Rochelle fell asleep on the couch and Nick covered her with a blanket and went to his own room.
