Julie worked the early shift the next day in the ticket booth. Her shift was almost over when Brian walked in the door. "I must be dreaming." she mumbled as he walked towards her.
"Hey, Julie. I was wondering if anyone had turned in a lost pager. It's in a blue case. I think I might have lost it here last night." he said.
Julie was thrilled that he even remembered who she was, and said as calmly as she could manage, "That sucks. Let me go check with the manager." she went into the office, and sure enough, there was a blue pager in the lost and found. The manager reminded her of the guidelines about lost items. The person must be able to somehow prove that it's theirs. Julie took the pager back to the booth, and said, "We do have a pager turned in, but I need you to prove that it's yours. Why don't you use the phone and page it?" she said, as she handed him the phone.
He dialed the number, and sure enough, the pager went off. Julie glanced down to see what it read, and then glanced down at it again. The screen read, "Hey Julie! Wanna do something tonight?" She looked up strangely at Brian, and he smiled at her.
"Are you sure this is your pager?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure now. So, do you?"
"Huh?"
"Want to do something tonight?" he finished.
"Sure. I get off work in about ten minutes. Why don't I page you a little later?" she said, with a wide grin on her face.
"Ok. Here's the number." he said, writing it down on her hand. "See you later!" he said as he left.
Julie just stared at him as he walked out, and she continued to watch him walk out to the parking lot until she lost sight of him. She was lost in thought, and didn't see the group of people waiting to purchase tickets until the man snapped his fingers in front of her face.
"Huh? Oh, sorry. How can I help you?" she said, embarrassed at her behavior.
When she clocked out of her shift, she practically ran out to her car, and sped all the way home. She was actually surprised that she made it without getting pulled over for speeding. She went up to her room, and paged Brian, leaving him a voice mail telling him to call her, and then she gave him her number.
A few very long minutes later, the phone rang. She waited until the second ring to pick it up. "Hello?"
"Julie? It's Brian."
"Oh, hey Brian. What's up?"
"Not much. So, are we still on for tonight?" he asked.
"Sure are. What do you want to do?" she said, trying not to sound overly excited. She wanted to play it cool, and not let him know how she really felt about him as she stared at all of the pictures of him on her wall. "I'll have to take those down if he ever comes over to my house to chill." She thought to herself.
"Well, I guess you probably don't want to go see a movie, huh?" he said with a slight laugh.
"Yeah, I've seen enough of a movie theater for one day." she said.
"How about we go to dinner, and then maybe some miniature golfing or something?" he suggested.
"That's fine. Just give me time to clean up, and I'll be ready to go."
"Ok. How about I pick you around 7:00?"
"That'll be great." she said, and gave him directions to her house. "See you then!"
"Bye Julie!" he said.
Once she hung up the phone, she sighed happily, and thought about
how
cute he
sounded over the phone with his Kentucky accent that she had always
loved.
She went to
take a quick shower so she didn't smell like popcorn anymore, and was
trying
to decide
what she should wear. She decided on jean shorts and a pale blue baby
tee
with her white
Old Navy tennis shoes. She dried her hair, and pulled the front back
with
some cute
barrettes. She added a touch of makeup, a splash of perfume, and she
was
ready to go
twenty minutes early. She called her parents, who were down in Miami
visiting
her
grandparents, to check in with them, and to let them know she was going
out
tonight so
they wouldn't worry if they tried to call her and she wasn't home.
Then, she
sat down to
wait. And wait, and wait.
