"Julie! What should I do? There's a fire in the kitchen. I'm sorry! I just wanted to make you well." Trinity said.
"It's not your fault, Trine. It was an accident. Accidents happen. Go next door and ask Mrs. Jones to call the fire department, and stay over there until I come get you, ok?" Julie ordered. Trinity ran out the front door. Julie ran up the stairs to the hall closet and took out the fire extinguisher. She read the directions and took it down to the kitchen, pulling out the pin and spraying it on the flames until they had died down. Once she was sure they were out, she opened the front and back doors and went next door to the Jones' house.
"Julie, are you ok? The firemen are on the way. What happened? Trinity said there was a really big fire in the kitchen." Mrs. Jones said.
"It wasn't that big. I put it out with the fire extinguisher."
"Thank God you were able to, otherwise it could have been much worse. I called you parents on their cell phone. They're on the way home."
"Thanks, Mrs. Jones. Do you think you could keep Trinity in here while I talk to the firemen and my parents when they get here?"
"Sure thing, dear."
Julie went outside to wait for the fire trucks after promising her sister everything was fine, and it wasn't as bad as she thought it was. Trinity thought the whole house had burned to the ground. The fire department went inside to investigate and to make sure that the flames didn't ignite again from the heat. Julie was sitting outside with Trinity when her parents came speeding down the street and into the driveway. Her mother jumped out of the car before it had even stopped completely.
"Oh my God! Are you girls ok?" she asked, running over and hugging both of them.
"Yeah, we're fine. It was just a small kitchen fire. I put it out with the extinguisher." Julie explained.
"What happened?" Bob asked, walking over to them.
"It's all my fault! I just wanted to make Julie better." Trinity said, her bottom lip beginning to quiver.
"It's not your fault, Trine. It's my fault."
"Will someone please explain what happened?" Bob was starting to lose his patience.
"I had a bad migraine, so I made Trinity lunch and went to lie down for a few minutes. I must have fallen asleep, and Trinity wanted to make me some soup to help me feel better. From the looks of it, I think that a towel was left sitting on the burner and caught on fire."
"That's exactly what happened." the fire cheif said, coming to talk to Bob and Nancy about the damage. "It's not too bad. Just a little of the wall against the oven. It's a good thing you had that fire extinguisher." he said. Bob left with the chief to talk about the damages and look at the kitchen while Nancy stayed with the girls.
"Julie, how could you have let this happen? I asked you to watch her for one day, and you couldn't do it. Do you realize that your irresponsibility could have resulted in your sister and you getting seriously hurt or worse?" Nancy's voice was beginning to raise.
"Mom, it wasn't anybody's fault, it was an accident!"
"Julie, I just hope you've learned something from this. We'll talk about your actions later. I'm going to go inside and see the damage that's been done."
"I'm sorry Julie." Trinity said quietly, now crying.
Julie just hugged her sister and said, "It's not your fault, Triner. Mom's just upset and needed to vent it. She was probably really scared too."
"But it's my fault. She should have yelled at me. I'm the one that left the towel there."
"Trinity, it was only an accident. Mom or Dad could have done the same thing, ok? Now, chin up and smile that pretty smile of yours because here comes Brian." Julie pointed down the street to where she saw his car coming.
He grew worried when he saw the firetrucks and quickly parked his car in the street. He saw Julie and Trinity sitting outside in the grass. Julie ran up to him and gave him a big hug. "Is everyone ok? What happened?" he asked.
"It's all my fault, Bri. I just left her for a while. I didn't know she would try and use the stove. She's not really supposed to if no one's there to watch. It's all my fault! She could have been killed!" Julie said, crying from the guilt she was feeling.
"Slow down Julie. What happened?"
"Well, I had a headache and went to lie down, and Trinity wanted to make me some soup but she left a towel on the stove and it caught on fire. Mom's really pissed at me. She blames me, but it's my fault anyways. And Trinity feels really bad too because she thinks it's all her fault, but it's not. It's mine. I never should have left her alone like that. Mom's right- I am irrespinsible."
"Julie, I don't think it was your fault. These things just happen
sometimes. Ok?" he
said, hugging her tightly. Julie just sniffed and nodded her head.
