Howie and Kim Ann decided it was time to leave their storage room paradise and head back out to the land of the living. They weren’t sure of the exact amount of time that had expired since they’d left, but they knew it was now very late. As they ventured into the quiet game room, Howie noted, “You know, I still can’t believe that Nicky didn’t come in here all night. That’s amazing.”
Kim Ann smiled. “He’s into Angela, I tell ya.”
“It’s never stopped him before,” replied Howie. “Plus, he was pretty ticked when I took that picture of him and her holding hands.”
“That doesn’t mean shit, Howie,” Kim Ann argued. “Tell me you wouldn’t just cringe if someone snapped a picture of us like that.”
Howie smiled guiltily. “Don’t drag me into it!”
Kim Ann jabbed his stomach playfully to let him know she wasn’t upset about her observation. “The look on your face says it all, Howard.”
Howie pulled Kim Ann close to him and kissed her. A loud tap on the window glass interrupted their intimate moment. They turned to see AJ peering in at them, frowning.
“What?” Howie asked through the glass.
AJ shoved the door open and started griping immediately. “Yo, D, this is like the worst night of my life.” He pointed out to where the others were. “Out there, you got Angela and Nick all cuddly and kissy on one side of the room, and then Bri and Sandra on the other side giggling and shit, and then in HERE, you two goin’ at it… it’s a freakin’ nightmare! I just want to go home and go to bed and pretend it all never happened.”
“So tell us how you really feel about all this, AJ,” replied Kim Ann.
AJ looked at Kim Ann but said nothing. She could tell he really was tired and decided to leave him alone. Instead, she and Howie followed him out to where the others were with no further comments on his outburst.
Nick stood up immediately when he noticed that AJ had found Kim Ann and Howie. “And where were you two all night?” he scolded.
“Uh,” Howie replied shortly, “we were in the game room, Nick. We thought for sure we’d see YOU there.”
A surprised look swept Nick’s face as the revelation hit him that he, in fact, had NOT gone to the game room all night. He shrugged and did a goofy two-fisted point at Angela. “I ‘as busy, D,” he said as Angela giggled at him.
AJ rolled his eyes and groaned. “I’m in hell. I swear to GOD I’m in hell.” He grabbed his jacket and started rushing everyone as he put it on. “Yo! B-Rok, Sandra, let’s go!” he shouted over to Brian and Sandra. “NOW!”
“Just keep your pants on!” snapped Sandra back at him.
“You just worry about your own pants, sistah,” AJ shot back at her. “My pants are the least to be worried about tonight.”
As Sandra approached, she narrowed her eyes at Kim Ann suspiciously, looking for a sign as to where she’d been all night and what she and Howie had been doing. Kim Ann suppressed a smile and looked away. “That must’ve been a hella video game you two were playing in there, “ Sandra said smugly, knowing that something was up. Brian stood beside her, grinning at her bold statement.
Angela crinkled her nose. “You guys had better NOT have done anything in there! Gary would have a cow!”
Kim Ann was annoyed by the comment and ignored it intentionally. She started shutting off the lights as she’d promised Gary she would do.
Nick found the whole situation hysterical. “You know, Angela, I don’t see what the big deal is,” he said, seriously. “As long as they cleaned up the mess….”
“NICK!” Howie yelled. “Don’t be so disgusting!”
Nick laughed hard at his own joke and Brian shot him a warning look to quiet him. He shrugged at Brian and grabbed Angela by the hand, pulling her toward the exit. Brian shook his head as Nick broke out into another fit of laughter as he and Angela headed out the door. Before Angela could stop him, he leaned back in and shouted, “HOWIE’S A PINBALL WIZARD!” Everyone but Howie and Kim Ann was laughing.
Kim Ann was quietly fuming to herself over Nick’s teasing in the bowling alley. She wouldn’t have minded so much if it hadn’t bothered Howie, but she could tell it had. He was seated between her and AJ in the front seat and was very lukewarm to her, paranoid of starting another comedic outbreak from Nick.
Nick started whispering to Angela and Kim Ann honed in on the conversation, waiting for an opportunity to humiliate him back. She couldn’t believe her luck when she heard him say, “So are you gonna stay with me tonight?” Tilting the rearview mirror onto them, she repeated his question loudly. “Yeah, Angela, are you gonna stay with Nick tonight?”
AJ was half asleep and leaned against the front passenger window but mustered enough energy to laugh at Kim Ann’s question. Angela felt Nick’s body tense up in anger. “You know,” he snapped back at her, “You shouldn’t listen to people’s private conversations, Kim Ann!”
“Well, my GOD! Nothing like preying on the inexperienced!” she said, looking back at him. “You sound like the big bad wolf in Little Red Riding Hood.”
AJ snickered again and howled. “My what a big…” Howie jabbed him in the ribs to shut him up, but AJ continued. “All the better to…”
“Fuck you!” yelled Nick before he could finish.
“Well,” exclaimed AJ, “I prefer ‘making love’ myself, but thas just me.”
Nick lunged forward to attack AJ, but Angela positioned herself between them to stop him. “Yes,” she whispered into his ear, before kissing it, hoping to calm him down. Nick lost his urge to strangle AJ and focused his attention on Angela’s response. He tightened his grip around her waist and whispered back, “I ain’t no wolf.” AJ rolled down the window and howled, “Owoooo…” as they continued down the highway.
-----------
It was 3 a.m. and everyone was surprised to see the lights on downstairs when Kim Ann parked behind the Peace House. v“Well, it’s nice to see that Daddy’s waitin’ up for us,” observed Nick with sarcasm. “I don’t care,” he added. “He can kiss my ASS!” He couldn’t believe that Kevin would concern himself that much with his and Angela’s sleeping arrangements. Regardless of the fact that they had agreed earlier to keep things platonic between them and the girls, it was still none of Kevin’s business.
“Easy Nick,” soothed Brian. “He probably fell asleep with the lights on or something.” He leaned forward to Howie. “D, you still got that camera on you?”
“Right here,” replied Howie, pulling the camera out of his coat pocket. “Why?”
“You know how Kevin sleeps – mouth open, droolin’ on himself and shit.” Brian grinned and added an evil “Muahahahahahaha” to emphasize his intentions.
Kim Ann turned the car off and stretched and yawned. “Well, kids, you can plot Kevin’s demise all you want to, but I’m getting to bed. I’m tired.” She got out of the car and waited for the others.
In group form, they headed quietly toward the back door. Howie paused to activate the flash on the camera and Kim Ann waited with him. She laughed to herself and Howie looked up at her curiously. She laughed again and said, “We should put his hand in water and make him piss himself.”
Howie frowned at her and muttered, “Yeah, right. THAT would make for a fun rest of the week.” He whistled to get the others’ attention and said, “Nicky, I think you should take the picture.”
“I don’t care,” huffed Nick, cockily, snatching the camera from Howie. “I’ll get a GOOD one.” He entered the house first with Angela close behind.
The group crept slowly and silently toward the living room with Nick in the lead. He peered cautiously into the room and ducked back quickly, stifling a laugh. “Oh God, you guys,” he said, “This is too classic!”
The rest of the group craned their necks to see around Nick. Kevin was fast asleep on the couch with his legs sprawled and his mouth wide open.
AJ whispered, “Dude, this couldn’t have been better if we had planned it!”’
Collapsed on Kevin’s chest was the teen magazine Nick had bought earlier in the day with ‘N Sync on the cover.
Brian motioned to Nick to get going and Nick let out a semi-loud burst of laughter, causing Kevin to stir and tighten his grip on the magazine. Brian motioned for him to get down and Nick moved to a squatting position. His knees cracked loudly and Kevin stirred again, bringing his left hand to rest on his crotch. Nick snickered and looked back at the others.
AJ shook his head in disbelief and whispered, “Man, it just gets better and better.” Nick crawled on all fours until he reached a position close enough for a clear shot. Sitting up on his knees, Nick steadied the camera and pushed the shutter and launched a crackle from the flash. The second the flash went off, Kevin popped up into sitting position, covering his eyes.
“What the…?” He saw Nick and heard the others laughing. “Nick!” Kevin yelled, grabbing for him. “Give me the damn camera!”
Nick fell back out of his reach and scrambled to the kitchen yelling, “Where’s the box? Where’s the box?” Howie pointed and Nick ran to the camera box and threw the camera in, mixing it in with the others. Having no intention of chasing after Nick, Kevin eased back on to the couch and said dryly, “Ya’ll think you’re pretty funny, dontcha?”
“I thought it was pretty funny,” quipped Nick, warranting an icy glare from Kevin. “Well, I did,” he added, keeping his distance.
Kevin scratched his head sleepily. With a tired drawl in his voice, he said, “Okay, I’m glad ya’ll had fun tonight, but I suggest you get to sleep ‘cause Tori’s comin’ in early tomorrow.”
“The Torminator?” gasped Brian, jokingly.
Nick shook his head. “You see? I knew he’d call her. You are such a buzz kill, Kevin.”
Still too tired to take the bait, Kevin just shrugged. “You can thank your mother, Nick. She gave up the whereabouts to her.”
Nick rolled his eyes. “Figures.” He turned to Angela and held out his hand. “Come on, Ange, let’s go to bed.” He eyed Kevin defiantly as he said it. vKevin shrugged and looked at Angela in a fatherly way. “You’re both adults,” he said matter-of-factly. “I trust you’ll be considerate of what we all decided as a group today.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Nick muttered back at him from the stairway.
Hurriedly, Kim Ann ran to the extra Wal-Mart bags on the floor. “Sandra? Where is it?” she urged. “Where’s the video?” before Sandra could reply, Kim Ann found the movie and ran after Nick and Angela. “Angie!” she yelled out, tossing the video to her. Angela caught it and glanced down at it, bewildered. When she realized it was “Jurassic Park,” her face turned a deep shade of red.
“Jurassic Park?” Nick asked loudly. “You’ve never seen that?”
“She’s heard about it,” giggled Sandra from the living room.
Nick looked at Angela questioningly. “Am I missing something here?”
“They’re just being stupid,” she replied nonchalantly, tossing the video back at Kim Ann. As mad as she was, she couldn’t help but crack a smile when Kim Ann gave her a huge grin and a thumbs-up. Angela waved her off and continued up the stairs with Nick.
Kim Ann turned to Sandra and grinned again. “She’s gonna do it,” she said triumphantly. “I can see it in her eyes.”
Brian eyed Sandra and asked, “What are you two putting that poor girl up to?”
Kim Ann looked at Kevin, made a fist at groin level and said, “Don’t
worry, it won’t be anything she can’t HANDLE, if you know what I mean?”
Not to dignify Kim Ann’s antics, Kevin turned and walked away… worried.
