~~*~~
I knew I should have been excited, we were performing at the Grammys, the music industry's biggest and most important night but I couldn't be excited. My thoughts were elsewhere, my thoughts were with a beautiful red head who would be sharing my night with the television and not beside me where she should be. I didn't blame her, her work came first as did mine but I did wish that our work would coincide once in a while, that our schedules would mesh one time to allow us the opportunity to be together, to let her see my job up close and share in the memories with me first hand, instead of through a phone call late at night.
"Come on Bone...we have to get going" Howie entered my room and softly announced that we had to leave for the venue. I guess my sad face showed through the false smile that I had plastered on my face for Howie hugged me and whispered "She was probably held up at work, you know she would call you otherwise. Come on AJ don't be upset, this is the night we have dreamed of all of our lives"
"That's why it makes it so hard that she is not here" My eyes filled with tears and I looked longily towards the phone, praying that it would ring and Keavy's voice would fill the phone apoligizing for not calling sooner but she got tied up at the hospital. The wish must have fallen on deaf ears for I left the room without hearing the shrill ring of the phone.
I walked down the hall towards the elevator in silence, following behind Howie and his sister Pollyanna who was Howie's date for the evening. "I am sure she is thinking of you AJ" Polly said as she reached for my hand and squeezed it. Howie and Polly shot each other a look as we exited the elevator. They steered me towards the hotel bar. "Bone go in and get Nick will ya, he went to get a shot to calm his nerves." I groaned and walked into the bar, expecting to have to drag a tipsy Nick out, instead I blinked my eyes fast and begged my eyes not to be deceiving me.
Seated at the bar with her back to me was a woman with long red curls. The backless dress plunged dangerously low to to her bottom and the thin straps that held up the dress were settled into the soft hollows of her shoulders. I walked closer and once I saw her heart shaped freckle on her spine I knew it was Keavy.
"How?" I bent down and whispered in her ear, my voice almost non existent as my heat beat fast in my throat.
She turned around and faced me "Never under estimate the power of love Yank, when there is a will, there is an stubborn irish lass who will whine and complain until she gets her way." Keavy's fingertips touched my lips and she smiled "You clean up very nice" she moaned softly as she looked at me in my suit.
I devoured her with my eyes as she sat there before me. The long black dress was tight, the slits on either side were cut to her hip bone, and ordinarily the knowledge that the slit was so high she couldn't be wearing underwear would have excited me, but at that moment all I could think of was how stunning she looked and how happy I was that she was there. Her magnificent red curls hung loose with a thin strand on either side clipped with emerald clips. Her only peice of jewellry? A shiny, shellacked green lifesaver that hung on a delicate chain around her neck.
"I see you are wearing your engagement ring" I teased as I kissed her neck.
Keavy grinned and reached into her evening bag and dangled an
identical
green lifesaver on a thicker chain "I couldn't have the women thinking
you
were still on the market now could I Yank?" and as I bent forward to
let her
hang the chain from my neck I once again said a prayer to the man
upstairs
for bringing her to me.
