"I can't believe that she can't get away, how the hell am I supposed to get on that plane and feel good about what I am doing if she isn't here to say goodbye" I punched my suitcase in frustration. Keavy had pulled the early shift at the hospital and therefore couldn't be at the airporrt to say goodbye. We hadn't slept a wink last night, content just to hold each other and cry. When the alarm went off this morning to wake us up we were in the shower, spending the precious moments we had left together. Keavy was taking it harder then I was. I had to pry her hands off of me, force her to get in the car and go to work, promising her that I would call her the minute I got into the hotel. How was I supposed to survive 4 months without her?

"Bone, come on we have to go" Howie's hand found my shoulder and led me towards the terminal. We got settled into the plush leather seats and as I looked out the window I did a double take, it couldn't be. I caught a glimpse of wild red hair running through the airport, her hands waving frantically. "She made it" I lept out of my seat and ran down the stairs, ignoring the ground crew who was yelling at me.

"KEAVY!!" I grabbed her in my arms and spun her around. "I thought you couldn't make it"

"Hhhold.......lllllet..........catch......breath." Keavy smoothed down her hair and wrung her hands "Doctor Adams told me that I was no good to him moping around so he told me to get down here, say a proper goodbye and then come back with a smile and get ready to do rounds"

"I love you, god I am so glad you are here" I kissed her hard and fast, trying to engulf her entire body and soul with my mouth.

"We hate to break this up but we have to get going, we have clearance from the tower, we have to prepare for takeoff" the stewardess explained as she climbed back into the plane..

"Go make me proud Alex, I will be with you every moment" Keavy kissed my heart "Remember this belongs to me so I am always with you"

To this day I still don't know what made me do it, maybe it was the thought of leaving her, maybe it was my emotions, or maybe she just looked so adorable in the green hospital scrubs that I couldn't help myself. Whatever it was that made me get down on one knee, in front of the ground crew, my friends watching from the airplane window and the curious onlookers with their faces pressed to the airport terminal windows, I took her hand, and with tears in my eyes I proposed to her.

"Baby you are the best thing that ever came out of a vacation. You have filled my life with humor, memories and love. You have made me so incredibly happy these last 3 months that I want to bottle this moment and keep it with me forever. Keavy will you marry me?" I looked up at her face, tears streaming down her face, her red curls tousled, and her teeth biting her lips.

"Get up off your knees and kiss me Yank...Yes Alex I will marry you" Keavy threw her arms around my neck and kissed me. We held each other tight and we kissed, amidst the clapping from the grounds crew, the pounding on the plane windows by my friends and the hundereds of people in the airport who were cheering us on, we kissed.

"I am sorry I don't have a ring for you, this was totally unexpected" I whispered as I touched her face and kissed her tears. I fiddled in my pockets and smiled "I have a green lifesaver" I slipped it onto the tip of her finger and kissed it "I promise I will get you a real one"

"I dont need a ring Yank, all I need is you" Keavy pulled me in for another kiss.

I am sitting here now as I replay that moment in my mind and I am fiddling with the shellacked green lifesaver that she wore around her neck until that fateful day in the pub, the day she was taken from me. She was so proud of the lifesaver, the quirky statement of love and the sign of the lifelong promise we made to one another, for it was that one lifesaver that kicked off our pattern of celebrating special events with lifesavers and the final 3 years of our love and lives together. I clasp the chain around my neck and turn off the computer. Sleep has finally come for me.
