If I Don't Have You

Chapter 6

Dani stormed past Howie down the hall to her office, slamming the door behind her. "PMS?" AJ remarked as he stepped inside with his bags. Howie rolled his eyes. "No, I'll take care of it," he told his friend. "Make yourself at home," he said over his shoulder as he started after Dani.

"Need some tips on how to handle your woman?" AJ asked laughingly.

"Up yours!" Howie called back as he entered the office.

AJ picked up his bags and headed upstairs. He laughed to himself, "Well, well. The love birds have finally stopped fucking and started fighting." He turned the knob and entered the guest room that he always stayed in when he visited Orlando. Every since he and his mom had moved to LA, AJ stayed with Howie and Dani whenever he was in Orlando. AJ placed his bags on the bed and looked around the room he sometimes felt he spent as much time in as his own bedroom at home. Dani had done a wonderful job of capturing his sense of style when she had redecorated the room for him. She had always welcomed him into their home and he couldn't help but wonder why this time was different. He shrugged as he admired the four post wrought iron bed. Dani had draped it with mosquito netting since the last time he had been here, and the black bedspread was piled high with leopard, zebra, and tiger print pillows. He placed his sunglasses on the night stand and switched on the safari style lamp. Removing his jacket, he tossed it on the deep brown leather sofa, knocking a black chenille pillow onto the faux zebra skin rug. He unpacked his clothes and carried his shaving kit into the bathroom. Figuring he had given Howie enough time to smooth Dani's ruffled feathers, he decided to venture back downstairs. He chuckled as, on his way out of the room, he noticed Dani's latest addition to the room's exotic decor and promptly hung his hat on it.

As AJ passed the hallway table, he glanced over at the neatly arranged photographs. His eyes fell on a recent picture of Dani and Sam. Sighing, he reached out and touched Sam's image.

Marcus strolled into the dressing room, nodding at AJ. "I got Amanda on her plane," he told him. "Boy, that was some blowout y'all had. How long is the break up going to last this time?" he asked facetiously.

"We're done for good as far as I'm concerned," he told his bodyguard pointedly. Marcus rolled his eyes. "Don't you have an interview scheduled?" AJ glanced at his watch impatiently. "I'm still waiting on this Sam guy to show up. He should have been here ten minutes ago." AJ stood and paced restlessly across the room. "I don't know why they insist on sending a rock columnist to interview a pop artist anyway."

"I've read some of his articles," Nick chimed in. "He's really good, but everybody knows he thinks we suck. Better you than me, Bro," he laughed, goading AJ. AJ flipped Nick off as the door opened and Howie and his girlfriend Dani entered the room. AJ immediately noticed the exotic looking woman that accompanied them. She was petite, yet curvaceous and she radiated a lush sensuality. He could see himself wrapped in her waist length ebony hair. He was delighted when Dani introduced her to the others as her friend Samantha. "Or," Dani had added, "Sam Rappaport, as she's known in the music world."

"You're that Sam guy?" Nick asked incredulously. Sam laughed at the look of disbelief on the young man's face. She was used to that reaction when people found out she was female. "I'm AJ," came a whiskey-soaked voice from behind her. She turned to find herself staring into deep soulful eyes which immediately looked her up and down. She smiled provocatively, used to eliciting that reaction also. AJ reached for Samantha's hand, bringing it to his lips and kissing the back. His eyes never left hers as he said, "I've been waiting for you."

At that moment, an assistant stuck her head in the door informing the guys that, with the exception of AJ, they were needed in the wardrobe room. Dani left with the men, calling back over her shoulder, "I'll leave you two alone so you can get your interview done." Receiving no response from either of them, she rolled her eyes and followed Howie and the guys out the door. "Marcus," AJ said as he continued to stare into Sam's eyes, "make sure we aren't disturbed."

"Sure thing, Bone," Marcus said as he left the room, closing the door behind him. "I guess we all know who'll be taking Amanda's place tonight," the bodyguard said under his breath.

Sam reclaimed her hand from AJ as she asked, "Are you ready for me?"

"Ready, willing, and able," he replied, grinning.

"I bet you are," she purred as she walked over to the table and began to dig her notebook and tape recorder out of her bag. She slipped a blank tape into the machine and pressed the record button. As she bent over to place the tape recorder on the table she felt AJ's touch on the base of her spine. "Nice tat," he remarked, as he admired the fairy tattooed just above the cleft of her buttocks.

"That's nothing," she told him, looking back over her shoulder at him and raising her eyebrows. "You should see the one I got yesterday."

"So show me," he replied.

"I don't know," she said flirtatiously. "It's not where I can show it to just anybody."

"I'll show you mine," he said, as he stripped off his shirt, "If you show me yours." Sam's eyes widened in appreciation of his muscular chest. She reached out and ran her hand down his chest, ending at the tattoo that intrigued her most. "Hmmmmm. . . . .," she said as she lightly traced the '69' with her fingernail. "What an . . . . interesting idea." He caught her fingers with his hand, bringing them to his lips and kissing them one by one. "Your turn," he told her tantalizingly. Sam gave him an assessing look before she took a step back and began to unbutton her jeans. AJ wet his lips as he watched in anticipation. She turned away from him and slid her jeans off her hips. "Beautiful," Aj sighed as he reached out and cupped her firm cheek. "Absolutely beautiful."

The sound of the doorbell brought AJ back to the present. He shook off the memories and bounded down the stairs. Realizing that Howie and Dani were still preoccupied, he threw open the front door.
