There she was. He couldn’t believe it. He didn’t know how Brian had done it, but they were now standing face to face. No words were exchanged for the first few minutes, only expressive looks of sorrow, apology, anger and despair. He was the first to speak.
“Well, uh, I don’t know what Brian’s up to, but I suppose I should at least hear you out.”
Tears sprang up in her eyes as she moved forward to hug him. He stood emotionless and unmoving for a second before he began to return the embrace. Tears began to fall from his eyes as he felt her warm tears cascade onto his shirt, creating a wet spot that grew with each second.
“I’m so sorry,” she choked out. “I would never hurt you. I’ve been such a fool! I owe it to you to tell you everything, the whole truth. I just ask you to give me the chance to explain myself and to tell you how I really feel.”
He nodded as he led her to a remote section of the airport where they could sit down, undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of the travelers surrounding them. She began at the beginning, telling him of her fantasies of a perfect life and illusions of Nick being the perfect man. More tears were shed, but they came to an understanding. The perfect silhouette was real. She had feelings and weaknesses, too.
He admitted to her that he had expectations of her and had an unfair image of who she should be. His own illusive dreams had prevented him from believing she could have any flaws or imperfections. They sat for hours in the airport, talking, before finally deciding to call a cab and make their way back to the hotel.
Brian had arranged for everything. A room was waiting for her along with dinner reservations for two at the hotel’s ritsy restaurant. They bill had all been picked up by the credit card of one Mr. Littrell. They both smiled and agreed they would have to thank him later. As the evening wore on, they learned what it was to be in a real relationship, with no unfair expectations or unrealistic images.
Though they knew in their hearts they were meant for each other, they learned to take it slow. All real and true relationships need a solid foundation. Illusions and crushes are all part of life, but are never meant to last. Dreams of Nick left Nikki’s head as she matured and realized that neither she nor all the millions of girls so infatuated with the baby-faced pop star would “get” him. He would choose a girl for himself, someone he could love and cherish without having to worry about who she loved, him or his image.
As for D and Nikki, they began to date steadily, getting to know each other in every way possible. They would call each week and email every day. Occasionally, he would invite her to tour with them for a period of time. He would visit her on breaks and they made an effort to spend as much time together as possible.
D continued to work as a personal bodyguard for Brian Littrell as the Backstreet Boys grew in success and popularity, earning their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were recognized for being the longest standing “boy band” and for being the only band from the 90s to supercede the image of a “boy band” and to grow and mature, leading the world into the new Millenium of Music. Nikki took that semester off school, giving her time to think about her goals and to find who she was. In two years, she would graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
After dating for a year, Nikki began to get up with the sunrise, knowing D would be watching it from wherever he was. It made her feel close to him. They continued their relationship happily and realistically, looking with hope to the future.
