Chapter Three: Isolated in the Lonely World of Waiting

A day of torment awaited her. From the first moment she stepped on campus, she knew it would be a rough day. To start off, her Sociology professor lectured on peer pressure and how trends are set. As an example, she used the widespread obsession with Nick among teenage girls.

“No mature young woman would fall head-over-heels for a guy she doesn’t even know. These girls are obsessed with a dream, an illusion, an image of what they consider to be the perfect man. However, none of them are mature enough to see through his image to find what’s really there.”

In a class of 150, it was impossible to refute these statements. Besides, she would look horribly silly if she confessed her true feelings about Nick to such a large class of college kids, most of which were upperclassmen. She would forever be known as the freshman that was obsessed with boy bands. That would ruin her next four years at the university. Nothing was worth such embarrassment, not even Nick!

After class, wouldn’t it figure that her best friend just had to tease her about her crush in front of a group of big-mouthed seniors who were sure to spread it all around. Her life was over. She was now the most immature student in Cal U’s history. She could see the doors of opportunity slamming with reminders of her obsessions. And, she wasn’t obsessed! At least she didn’t stalk them or follow them around. She wasn ’t that crazy…at least not yet!

The day progressed, leaving a broken friendship, bitter words and angry thoughts in its wake. Her friend had gone too far in her teasing. She had stood it long enough and now it was time to break it off. Besides, she didn’t even like the guys. She said Nick looks like a pretty boy and the guys can’t even really sing! She had some gall to make such a horrendous statement. They had an argument and discovered it may be better for them both to leave each other alone for awhile. After all, they had grown quite far apart.

The only consolation left was in her music. She switched on the radio and put in the Millenium CD. As her men crooned her favorite love songs, she closed her eyes and longed for the day they’d meet, for the day he’d see her for the first time and fall madly in love with her. He was the perfect man. She was sure of this. They were also very close…in her dreams, that is. She felt as if she knew him already. They were meant to be together. He had to be her soulmate. There was no other with which she could imagine herself so close.
