She had talked to Brian for hours that Tuesday. He had called Howie in the room to ask him to sit with D on the plane to talk to him. Howie agreed as Brian told Nikki to pack two days worth of clothes. They hung up for a while as he booked her a flight that would arrive in Iowa only ten minutes after they were scheduled to touch down. He reminded her that D would probably not be too happy to see her and that it would not be easy to convince him to even talk to her.
Brian told her he hoped Howie’s talk with D on the plane would help calm him down a bit. Then it would be easier for her. They talked for only a few minutes before she had to jog over to her neighbor’s house to beg for a ride to Ontario Airport. Her flight left in 2 hours, which barely gave her enough time to get there and check in. She brought only one bag, which allowed her to bring all of her things on carry-on rather than forcing her to check in luggage.
Finally sitting down on her flight, she settled back for a long ride. She decided to write a letter to D, explaining just how she felt and apologizing for all the trouble she had caused with her foolish dreams and illusions. At least she’d have something to give him in case he didn’t want to talk to her.
The flight gave her time to listen to her CD on Discman and think about what she would say to D when she saw him. She was so nervous. She couldn ’t believe she had just hopped a plane to go clear across the country to see a guy who never wanted to see her again. She cleared her ehad and prayed for the best as the plane began its descent into Iowa City.
Stepping off the plane and out the gate, she saw him approaching. He
didn
’t see her yet and didn’t appear to know who or what he was looking
for.
As she stepped forward, he caught sight of her. A look of mixed
emotions
crossed his face. They stopped four feet from each other, neither
saying
a word. They just watched. The pain in his eyes was still there, but
at
least he didn’t turn away angrily and leave. His lips parted slowly as
he
began to speak.
