Chapter Twenty-seven: The Words to Say to Find a Way

Her phone rang early that Monday morning. It was Brian, calling to lament about his concert experience the night before. It seemed D was becoming a work-o-holic to take his mind off of everything. He was avoiding Brian as much as possible and neglected all duties that had anything to do with being around Brian.

He was there during the concerts and when absolutely necessary, pretending nothing was wrong, but he even went as far as to miss a sound check and a vocal practice to avoid Brian. It was the first time he had missed either since they began working together. This worried her. He had told her before that the practices were his favorite part of behind the scenes. He loved to listen to the others singing and to the harmony they all made together, without the noise of the crowd.

Over the past few days, she had done a lot of thinking, particularly about D, their relationship and how special he had really been to her. She had really messed up, letting her illusory dreams get in the way of something real.

“Well, Bri, I guess I’m seeing the truth in the old saying that you never know what you have until you lose it. I really do miss him. I wish I could come see him, just to tell him how I feel, to apologize. I realize I don’t deserve a second chance, but I at least deserve the chance to say I’m sorry and to tell him how I really feel…”

“Do you really feel that way? I mean, if there was a way to bring you two together, would you do it?”

“Of course I would! Right now, I’d do anything just to be able to see him again.”

They talked for a few more minutes. A secret plan was forming in Brian’s head. She couldn’t be sure of exactly what he was planning, but she hoped it worked, whatever it was!
