Chapter Twenty-six: The Face That Wouldn’t Go Away

Coming in from a morning jog, D shot a look over at Brian, who was sitting on the other end of the room, on the phone. As soon as he came in, Brian turned away and talked in hushed tones, as if he didn’t want D to know who he was talking to.

“Well, yea, I’ve gotta go. Take care of yourself and I’ll call you soon. Let me know if you need anything. Okay? Alright… No problem… See ya… Bye.”

“Who was that, Bri? Was it, um, anyone I should, uh, know about?”

“Well, I, um… It was Nikki. She feels really bad and just needed to talk. You know, you’re being really harsh with her…”

“Jeez, Brian! I thought you were MY friend. She’s just some girl. You didn’t even like her at first. Why would you stand up for her like you have been? And why would you be talking to her on the phone?! You know, I really don’t appreciate the fact you’d continue to talk to someone who is so willing to hurt anyone to get what she wants. What is wrong with you?”

“Well, you know, D, she didn’t DO anything. All she did is have a fantasy. She didn’t know what she wanted. If you’d just TALK to her about it, you’d see I’m right. She was living in a dream world. When she snapped into reality, she saw what was happening and tried to stop it. She didn’t actually do anything. Besides you walked in on it…”

“You know, Bri, you can’t say anything here. You don’t know what it’s like. And, she did do something…she broke my heart!”

An awkward silence followed the angry words as a stunned Brian struggled to find words to say. D left him so and took a long, cool shower. Midway through, Brian knocked on the door, saying it was nearly time to go to the arena. “Go ahead without me. I’ll be there on time,” D told him as he let the cool water run over his body, which shook with anger, frustration and sadness.

Arriving at the arena 45 minutes later, D found a very angry Brian being fixed up by First Aid. Coming into the arena he had run into a large group of girls who pulled at him, crying and screaming out desires and expressions of undying love for the singer. His small security team had not been enough. Luckily, he escaped with only a few scratches on his arms and a badly torn T-shirt.

“Man, D, I knew I shouldn’t have left alone. I thought you said you’d always have my back. So where were you today?!”

As his friend stomped off, D began to realize just how much they needed each other. Though he really felt like apologizing, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. He felt too angry and betrayed to even look at Brian anymore.
