He quickly told her the news the doctor had given him, but nothing he could say or do could erase the pain caused by the words he had just overheard. They burned in his chest, leaving a shattered heart full of mixed emotions. She stumbled through an explanation, unsuccessfully, and cried out of frustration as he sat, confused, numb to the pain.
“You know what, I don’t know what I was thinking. I hardly know you and here I am killing myself over trying to keep you happy. I don’t even know why I jumped into this so foolishly. I’m not really the one you liked. You were after that pretty-faced Nick the entire time! I can’t believe I’ m so stupid to actually believe you’d be interested in me. You know, I don’t need this right now. I’m going to go and get a decent night’s sleep!”
“Hey, hey, bro, don’t you think you’re being a bit rash? It’s not like she meant it… Just give her a minute to explain…”
“You know what, Bri, I should have listened to you in the first place. I should have never fallen for her! I don’t know. I can’t think straight. I feel so angry, so betrayed. You know, Nikki, I really liked you, but I don’t know how I feel anymore. Don’t expect to hear from me for a while.”
With anger in his eyes, he stormed out of the room and slammed the door. He collapsed to the ground outside the door and buried his face in his hands in silent mourning. He heard her start to cry as Brian tried to console her, giving her his cell number in case she needed to talk. He couldn’t believe his own best friend was siding with her! Brian was being too sympathetic. As thedoor opened, Brian quietly told her “call me whenever you need to talk. Let me know how you’re doing. Thanks.”
Their eyes met in a flash of anger mixed with strains of trust and a
slight bit of understanding. Without another word on the subject, they
left the hospital and drove to the airport. Brian told no one of what
he
had seen or heard, saying it was a private couple affair and no one
else’s
business. D was thankful for his support, but didn’t feel he could
ever
forgive her for hurting him so much.
