It felt good to talk to someone about her feelings. Brian was a sympathetic listener. He sonsoled and counseled her as she poured her soul out to him. He helped her work through her problems and her feelings of despair. They talked for a long time, the longest she had talked to anyone in days.
Standing up, Brian said, “Well, we should probably keep this between us. I don’t want to see him get hurt. We should move onto another subject, too. He’ll be back anytime now.”
“Yea, I know. Thank you Brian. …I don’t know. I just don’t think I could tell him. I don’t think I could ever say it. He’s so good to me and is such a nice guy! Hearing such things would shatter his world if what you’re saying is true.”
“Well, he trusts you. All good relationships are based on trust. If you break that trust by keeping it from him, well, that would be jeopardizing your relationship.”
“Yea, but what am I supposed to tell him? I used you to get to Nick, who I’ve been crushing over for years?!”
At that moment, she heard the doorknob click as the door swung slowly open. Her hands flew over her mouth, as if trying desperately to take back the offensive words she had just uttered. Deep, dark, injured eyes looked straight into her soul, as if looking to find all the things she had never told him. Standing dismal-faced at the door, he stared at her. No words were exchanged, only looks. Her heart tore as she saw just how much pain she was inflicting on him. A tear gently rolled down her cheek as she murmured “We need to talk.”
“Indeed, we do.”
