The restless nights were beginning to take their toll. D was so tired he could hardly feel himself walking anymore. He looked to the faces in the hall for comfort, but found no consolation in their stony eyes and cold hearts. Slowly sipping his coffee, he made his way down the corridor to the lobby. On the way, he ran into Nikki’s doctor.
“I’m so glad to see she has someone so caring to see her so often. You two must be really close.”
If only he knew the truth… They hardly knew each other, though D wanted to learn all there was to know about her.
“Oh, also, I’d like to let you know, she is recovering very well and can be released in two or three days. She’s not that bad off. I think the initial shock to her body was the biggest problem. Her leg is healing well and she should be able to walk again soon, with help, of course! You know, she’s really lucky. We don’t see many people in her situation walking out of here. Most have permanent damage…”
Two or three days? He’d have to check his schedule, but it looked like
he
might be able to take her home from the hospital. He had one day off
between Salt Lake City and Denver. He’d have to leave as soon as his
obligations were finished after the concert. He turned back to return
to
the room to relay the good news. As he began turning the knob, he
heard
voices. That’s odd… Brian didn’t like her. He paused for a moment,
debating on whether or not he should interrupt their conversation.
That’s
when he heard it.
