Thank you. That’s what she told him. It was the last thing she had been able to say before the dark-faced man came through the door, carrying coffee for the exhausted D. She smiled to him as he eyed her with distrust. She knew he had never liked her—and for good reason. She had tried to use his friend to get to the heart of another man. If D ever found out she was playing him, he’d be devastated. She turned and looked out the window, giving a deep sign and lapsing into deep thought. She heard a voice tell D he should take a break to walk around for a while. Seconds later, the door shut gently as a tear slowly rolled down her cheek.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Snapped from her melancholy, she turned to meet the dark eyes belonging to Brian. Though she was sure he still didn’t like her, all traces of judgement and mistrust were gone from his face. In its place was a genuine look of love and understanding. Another tear carved a path down her cheek as he took a handkerchief out of his right pocket and offered it to her.
“You know, I’ve never seen D this hung up on a girl before. He thinks you ’re really special, you know. And, I don’t know, you seem to be okay. I just hope you feel the same way about him…”
Tears began to cascade down her cheeks, blurring her vision and giving Brian an other-worldly appearance. She knew what he was hinting at and he was right. This couldn’t continue.
“I never thought I’d meet someone like him. I didn’t mean to..., I mean, I wasn’t looking for anything like this. All I wanted was to find a way to meet the one man I have loved for years. Now, I guess I see that it wasn’t really love I felt, but a kind of infatuation. I don’t know what to do. I can’t let so many years of dreams just pass like that when I have the chance to make them reality...”
“But can’t you?” His dark words burnt a hole through her soul and
bared
the guilty feelings she had repressed for the past weeks. The tears no
longer flowed. She was far past that by now. The feelings of sadness,
confusion and remorse were too deep for tears. Brian sat at the end of
her bed and they fell into a deep conversation...
