Recovery went slow. It seemed like she was in more pain every day. As time passed, she began to be able to feel all the aches and pains of the accident. At least she knew she wasn’t hurt too bad in the crash! She could now feel the pain from the tips of her fingers to the tips of her toes. That meant she wasn’t paralyzed; she was glad of that, but the pain was killing her!
D had come to visit the previous night. He was there whenever possible. He spent every break, even the tiniest 1-day break, at her side, helping her in every way possible. He stayed with her his entire 4-day break between the San Jose and Portland concerts. He would sit and tell her stories, either from books he picked up somewhere or from his own imagination or experiences. She felt him there throughout the weekend.
One morning, she awoke to find him sleeping in a chair next to her bed, his head leaned over onto his chest in exhaustion. She hadn’t noticed how dedicated he was. It was really taking a lot out of him. Her own parents didn’t stay that long. They worked during the week and went to church on Sunday, leaving Saturday as the one day in the week they could visit.
Looking down at the pitiful figure slumped next to her, she wondered why he was here. She didn’t deserve someone so dedicated, especially not someone as sweet as he. She was so hung up on Nick and her own desires that she failed to notice the man that stood always by her side. When the accident first happened, she thought Nick might come see how she was, but he ignored her completely. It was almost like he didn’t care.
She was really confused, feeling her ever-present attraction to D, but still wishing for her dream date with Nick. In reality, she didn’t deserve either one of them. She was a real jerk, treating someone who loved her so much so badly! She never thought she would meet someone like D. Though he was no Nick Carter in the looks or singing department, he had his own personality and charm that sometimes made Nick seem like an arrogant fool. She sighed, wondering what she should do. She could feel herself falling for D, even though Nick was who she was really after.
Everything was so confusing now. Her life had been so simple, so easy before. She had lived in an illusion where Nick was there to rescue her from the boredom of normality into his wonderful world of fun and excitement. She had been thrown back into reality as she was rudely awakened from her dreams by a semi and a guardrail on the freeway onramp. Now everything was upside down and she realized she had some important decisions to make. D seemed to be the perfect guy, so caring and sweet, but should she still pursue the man of her dreams now that she was so close?
Sighing in frustration, she looked over to the innocent face of the
sleeping beau next to her as he began to move, slowly moving from a
night
of fitful rest and worry. She wondered what to say to him as his eyes
slowly fluttered open.
