He watched her as she drifted off to sleep. She looked like an innocent angel. Her parents had arrived a half hour before. Now they were outside speaking with the nurse. They seemed very nice, but didn’t talk much. They were more preoccupied with their daughter’s condition than to think to ask him who he was and what he was doing there. The doctor came in and asked everyone to step out into the waiting room for a while. She needed her rest.
His eyes burned as the bright lights of the emergency room reminded him just how few hours of sleep he had got the night before. He stumbled over to a chair next to the sleepy-eyed Brian. Members of the security team were posted throughout the room. He told Brian to go back and get some rest to prepare for the concert the next night. He refused and said he wanted to stick by him all the way. They were friends and he would always be there when needed. Brian was always like that. He was so caring, concerned only for others, never for himself. He knew how much Brian despised Nikki, but he put it all aside for his sake.
A few hours later, Nikki’s condition was upgraded from critical to serious. She was moved into a normal recovery room where he could sit with her. In the waiting room, he had spoken to her parents and explained the day’s events. They were skeptical about the rapidness of the development of affection, but they respected his growing role in her life.
They spoke with her when visitors were allowed in. They spent an hour talking to her before taking a coffee break, giving him time to see her. She smiled when he came into the room. Her memory seemed to be fully recovered. Her broken limb was raised pitifully above her head as her eyes shown under the bandages hiding the lacerations covering her face. Tears came to his eyes as he thought of the pain she must be in, but he quickly suppressed the feeling, knowing he should be strong for her.
Sitting on the edge of her bed, he spoke softly to her, telling her he
was
glad she was doing a bit better. She really worried him for a while.
He
also told her he would be there for her whenever possible. He couldn’t
quit the tour, but could come to visit her on the breaks. Pulling out
the
schedule he and Brian had composed, he told her he would visit her the
next day before their second LA concert. He’d then would fly back
down
the next evening after the San Jose concert, after which they had a
4-day
break. After that, the schedule was pretty packed, with 5 concerts
over a
9-day period. He promised to fly to her each break he had and to call
her
every day he was on the road. He was rewarded with a slight smile that
told him she appreciated his efforts.
