She awoke hours later, coming out of emergency surgery to attempt to repair some of the near fatal damage her body sustained from the crushing metal that enveloped her. She was numb from the anesthetics and could not feel if she even had a body from her neck down. Her head was pounding and she was very confused. The doctors had come to her in the ICU when she first awoke to brief her of her condition, but she still did not understand why she was here and what was going on. Perhaps it was just a dream...
Hearing a commotion outside her door, she watched as a young man arguing with a nurse began to open the door. She caught the end of their conversation, in which he said, “but I AM family! I’m her boyfriend. Jeez!” He looked vaguely familiar, but her mind was still clouded with confusion.
“Are you okay?” he asked with the sincerest expression of love and concern she had ever seen. She just watched him for a second and then looked to the door where a dark figure lingered. It didn’t appear that he wanted to be there. He watched her with cold, yet caring eyes. Something told her that they didn’t really get along too well, but he was concerned for her anyways.
“Bri, are you going to come in and talk to her?” The young man at her side questioned his friend lingering in the doorway. As the figure came closer, she began to recognize him. Looking at her ‘boyfriend,’ it suddenly all came back to her. D, the plan, the daydream and the semi she swerved to avoid. All the days events were suddenly jogged back into her memory.
Stuttering, she began to ask “W-what happened to me? W-where am I?”
“Shhh... It’s okay,” D tried to calm her down. “You had a little accident, but you’ll be okay. The doctors told me you’ve been out of it for quite some time! By the way, your parents are driving up to see you and should be here anytime.”
“My car! Is it okay? How did it happen? All I can remember is merging and a semi and it all went black...”
“Shh... don’t get excited. You’ll be fine. The semi driver said you were coming right for him, so he blew his horn. It must have spooked you because you swerved right into the guardrail. You’re lucky you were so close to the hospital. They worked on you for over an hour and it looks like you’re going to be fine. You’ll just need a few weeks to recover.”
His caring tone and soothing voice calmed her down a bit. She was
still a
bit rattled, knowing she totaled her car into a guardrail. Everything
was
different now. Her whole life would change. Worst of all, she could
feel
Nick slowly slipping through her fingers.
