“D! Hurry up. You got a phone call. Sounds urgent!”
D rushed out of the shower and threw a towel around his waist to grab the phone from a very worried-looking Brian.
“Hello?”
“Hi, are you a relative of a girl named ‘Nikki Morris’?”
Nikki? This was a little weird. He figured he would get nowhere by saying no...and they WERE dating....
“Yes, I am, how can I help you?”
“Hi, my name is Jessie. I’m a nurse from USC Medical Center and we have Miss Morris here. Can you please sit down? The news I have may disturb you.”
Sinking into a chair, he said in a tone that was barely audible, “go ahead.”
“Miss Morris was in a horrible automobile accident this evening. She is currently in our emergency trauma ward awaiting emergency surgery.”
D heard nothing else. The nurse droned on about her condition, but D was too stunned to hear another word. He didn’t know what to do. Snapping back into reality, he heard something about the nurse needing her parents’ number in order to gain permission to bring her into surgery. He stumbled to the desk and clutched the note on which was scrawled her number in her neat, bubbly handwriting. Choking back tears, he relayed the information to the note and hung up the phone. He turned to Brian, who had taken in the entire scene with a sincere look of concern on his face, and started to speak. “But, I...I mean—I just...we just...right now...”
“Shhh...” soothed Brian, trying to comfort his friend. “She’ll be okay. Go get changed and tell me about it on the way to the hospital, which is where I assume she is...”
D numbly threw on the first outfit he saw, not noticing it was part of
Brian’s wardrobe. Brian smiled, but didn’t say anything when he saw
him.
He figured he had enough on his mind already. Grabbing the head of
security, Brian explained the situation and they were promptly given a
van, disguises and a security team. They rushed off to USC, detouring
around the entrance she now blocked with her mangled car.
