Chapter Fifteen: Back to Reality

Opening her eyes from his sweet embrace, she smiled and looked deep in his eyes, hesitating, surprised, for a moment. Then it came back to her. It was just D. In the midst of his passionate display of affection, she imagined herself in Nick’s arms, deep in his embrace, and temporarily believed it was really him she was kissing. They soon parted and she began her long drive back home.

She couldn’t believe her luck! She felt into her pocket, fingering the small slip of paper that would come to unite her with her true love. D had exchanged info with her, but she knew it was only just the beginning. As they got closer, she would see him more often...which meant she would be around Nick more often! She was so happy. Her wildest dreams were coming true.

She let her mind wander a bit as she turned onto the onramp for the 10-freeway. The next few minutes became like a blur. First, there was Nick coming close to kiss her and she was closing her eyes in sheer ecstasy and excited anticipation. When she opened them, she saw him transform into a semi truck as she felt a blow to her face and chest. Something had hit her hard, knocking her breath out. The next thing she saw was a deflating airbag in front of her, with metal and blood everywhere. Nick was nowhere to be seen. The world slowly went black as she slumped forward, too exhausted to do anything else.

She couldn’t remember where she was or what she had been doing. All she knew is that she felt incredibly weird, like she had never felt before. As if in slow motion, she slumped over the steering wheel and fell into a deep, peaceful sleep from which she felt she would never have to emerge. It only took a few moments for her to totally lose consciousness.

By the time the paramedics arrived, she was out cold. She didn’t even feel them prying her car apart to pull her limp body out of the mangled wreckage. They rushed her to USC Medical Center, the closest hospital with an adequate emergency trauma ward. Transferring her from the stretcher to an emergency room gurney, one of the nurses noticed a small slip of paper with a phone number and an e-mail address written on it. Figuring it was family and finding it the quickest way to contact the girl ’s family, he called it.
