Chapter Twelve: A Defining Moment

Now finished with his little chores, he returned to Nikki. She was sitting all alone watching the stage crew put finishing touches on the setup of the arena. She looked his way and smiled. As she slowly rose from her chair to step toward him, he marveled at her radiance. Shiny black curls bounced on her shoulders as she stepped towards him. She shyly lowered her eyes and flirtatiously brushed her curls from her face.

As they came close, she took his hand and smiled. They fell into step together and began to talk. He told her he was sorry for pulling her away from her plans for the day. She laughed and said all she had planned was to lounge beside the pool until it was time to go to the concert. He smiled and asked her if she needed to go back to the hotel for anything. He was giving her a front row seat so she would not need her ticket. She smiled and said she’d rather stay and get to know him a little better. In the distance, he saw Brian watching them with a dark, concerned expression. When he realized his presence was felt, he turned and went backstage.

“Look, Nikki, we’ve gotta talk. I need to know what you think of me because I think highly of you. I usually take a long time to get into a relationship, but this seems different. I guess what I’m trying to say is I need to know if you like me the way I like you. If not, I don’t want to play the fool. I need to know how you feel before I get too involved in something you may not even want to be a part of.”

She looked stunned for a moment. Perhaps he was too frank. He hoped she would say she felt the same, but he was afraid she wouldn’t. She took a deep breath and looked at her shoes. He could feel his whole world start to crumble as her lips began to part. He became overwhelmed with grief as a feeling of impending doom rushed to his stomach and a nauseous feeling of rejection overpowered his thoughts.

“Well, I have never gotten this involved with anyone so quickly either. I mean, it’s so hard to believe,” she said breathlessly.

“I just met you, yet I feel like we’ve been friends for years and we’re now exploring another aspect of our friendship. I don’t know if it’s going to work out, it that’s what you mean, but I can tell you I really want it to.”

He smiled, relieved. He felt like the world had been lifted from his shoulders. She did like him. Brian was wrong, for once. He was glad they were on the same page in this relationship. It looked like the girl from his dreams would turn out to be the perfect woman for him after all.
