Love For An Eternity

Chapter One: A Yearning to Be Together

The world was alive with the freshness of springtime. She sat alone, waiting in the center of her small college campus, waiting patiently for him to arrive. He said he’d be there at 4:30 sharp. It was now five. She sighed slowly and hoped he had merely been caught in traffic and would be there soon.

“I wonder when I should just give up and go back in,” she pondered. She closed her eyes and leaned back on the beach, allowing the brutal rays of the California sun beat down on her face. It was a warm day. She could feel tiny beads of sweat forming on her brow. She hoped he arrived soon. She didn’t want to be out much longer. She opened her eyes and watched a small bee work busily at her feet.

“I bet he’s never late…too responsible, but always working.” Why did everything always lead back to HIM?! No matter what she focused on, she couldn’t get the image of him that burned in her heart out of her mind.

Sighing once more and standing up to go, she felt a soft cool hand slip around her waist. Gentle lips brushed her cheek as he whispered a greeting and his sincerest apologies into her ear. A bit perturbed by his tardiness, she looked away sadly. He came around to face her and they watched each other in silence. His confident smile had been replaced by a repentant pout that let her know he never meant to hurt her. Faced with such pathetically sad puppy dog eyes, she couldn’t help but smile. They laughed and began to talk. He always knew how to make her happy. She could never stay angry with him too long.

As they walked toward his car, he told her why he was late. They were working on a new song and had to work out some of the details. She heard some of his words, but many were lost in the breeze that fluffed his soft blonde hair ever so slightly. Little wisps of hair were picked up by the breeze and left fluttering down in front of his deep blue eyes or alongside his beautiful mouth. When he spoke, the words were like music to her ears. The passion and feeling of his songs poured out of his lips as he spoke to her. No matter what the subject, she listened to the music of his voice with her full attention. Time stopped when they were together.

Explaining the dinner reservations were pushed back to seven, he asked if she’d like to go to a park or something to walk around. Her smile was enough to tell him the idea was a winner. Tonight they were supposed to dine together in a small, private restaurant, just the two of them, but a last minute meeting required him to change plans so they dined with the other band members. She was, of course, invited. After all, they had all become like family. The closeness of the group had once amazed her. Now, being a part of their “family,” she understood it. They all watched out for each other, never leaving another alone to deal with problems, but backing him up all the way. That’s why their relationship was so pure and even more beautiful.

Overlooking the ocean, the park’s pathways provided the perfect places for young hearts to reveal their love. This was where they had first met, overlooking the ocean at high tide late one summer afternoon. It was also where he first asked her to go out with him…as his girlfriend. All the important moments of their life had happened here and now another unforgettable event would be added onto their memories.

Stopping to look over at their favorite vista, he looked deep in her eyes and spoke of his love for her. His life was nothing before her. She was his happiness. Stroking her face with his soft, gentle hands, he leaned closer and their lips brushed. He opened his eyes to search deep into hers, then kissed her gently as he began to fall to one knee. A small, black, velvet box was now in his hand. He held her left hand clenched close to his heart and told her he loved her more than life and couldn’t imagine living without her.

Carefully, he opened the box to reveal a stunning diamond ring. He gazed into her eyes as he whispered the words she had waited for all her life. Off in the distance, children’s voices could be heard, accompanied by a familiar ringing that she supposed to be the ice cream truck. It reminded her of the heat and, as he spoke, a rosy blush crept into her cheeks in anticipation. “So, my love, my life, will you, please… will you…”

“Get up already! Your alarm has been going off for like 10 minutes. How is it you can’t hear it? We can hear it clear across the house!” Rudely torn from her dreams, Nikki opened one eye to glare at her sister. She hated having them around. They were so annoying. They could ruin even the best fantasy.

As she got up, she thought about her dreams, rolling her eyes to think that she’d ever imagine something so outrageous happening, but secretly longing for it. She smiled at her foolish dreams. Nick Carter wouldn’t even consider dating her, much less propose to her! She readied herself for school and prepared to step into the cruel world of reality.
