Character Analysis

Abigail Williams is one of the major characters.  She is definitely one of the more evil characters.  Abigail is a liar and a thief.  She is a low class woman.  Abigail is Reverend Parris’s niece.  She was the maid for the Proctors.  She sleeps with peoples husbands.  Abigail does not have high standards for herself.  Abigail is only out to get revenge.
John Proctor is a farmer.  He is viewed by the town as a good man, but he holds a dark secret.  Proctor cheated on his wife.  He was one of the accused witches.  Proctor cares a lot about his reputation.  In the end all he cares about is his pride and keeping his name.  He denies being a witch and is hung for it.
Reverend Hale is a witch hunter, and a minister.  He is asked to observe Betty.  Hale talks to the accused to witches to try to persuade them to confess and testify.  In the end he wants the accused just to confess to save them selves instead of doing it to be honest. 
Reverend Parris is Salem’s minister.  He is the father of Betty, an accused witch.  A lot of the town does not like him.  The people refuse to go to church because he is there.  He fears that the news of his daughter being a witch will cause more people to stop showing up at church.  He is a very paranoid man.
Elizabeth Proctor in John Proctor’s wife.  She is a jealous and mean woman.  Elizabeth thinks Abigail is out to get her because she wants to be John’s wife.  Abigail accuses Elizabeth of having a voodoo doll of her, which causes everyone to believe she is a witch.
Betty Parris is Reverend Parris’s daughter.  She is ten years old.  She becomes very ill and people blame it on witchcraft.  She was one of the girls out dancing in the forest.
Francis Nurse is very well respected man in Salem.  He is a very wealthy man that people look to for advice.
Rebecca Nurse is Francis Nurse’s wife.  She is also a very well respected person in Salem.  She is accused of being involved in witchcraft, but refuses to confess to such behavior.
Mary Warren is Proctor’s servant.  She is another one of the girls involved with Abigail.  She gave Elizabeth the doll that Abigail said was used for voodoo.
