My Companion

Alone in a vast universe of darkness,
I see a light shimmering there within.
It beckons me, taunting me with its sanctuary.
I am alone.
I move towards the beacon of hope,
And it drifts away
Leaving me once again, alone
I ponder its purpose.
It can’t be to taunt me!
I follow it through the darkness,
And it eludes me once more.
The frustration leaves me disheartened,
And feeling even more alone.
Hope fades, my spirit weakens,
And I am cold.
The emptiness of the void frightens me,
The silence unbearable,
But the light remains, beckoning for me to follow.
With no paths to lead me,
Or guides to follow,
I resume my pursuit.
What have I done to deserve this?
Why must I suffer?
Why am I here, alone?
I am weary.
I am angry at the treachery of my only companion.
I turn away to run and it follows me,
I stop, and it does the same,
Leaving me to ponder its purpose once more.
It doesn’t make sense!
Why do you follow when I run?
Why do you run when I follow?
The humiliation is  too much to bear!
I turn my head and start to cry,
Soundless tears roll down my face,
But my perseverance is renewed.
I look away from the light,
And I see it!
In all it’s beauty and it’s glory,
A whole new universe waiting to be explored!
The light’s purpose is suddenly revealed!
It wasn’t there for me too follow.
It wasn’t there to tease me or to taunt me.
I focused all my attentions on the light,
So much that I forgot to look around,
I realize the purpose of my companion,
It was there to illuminate my way!
