=====================================================================
They pulled up to the curb
and Angel parked the car. “Buffy, why don’t you go up and see if Cordelia is
there, I told her we’d be here last night and she was anxious to see you.”
“Anxious? Or nauseated?”
“Anxious, for sure. Just
go up.”
“Ang-”
“Buffy, GO.”
“Not if you’re going to
be all mean.”
He growled loudly and
turned to her. “I am your sire Buffy and you do as *I* say.” He snapped. “Now
go upstairs.” She just stared back at him in shock. This was not Angel, not
*her* Angel. She wanted to run, to get as far away as she could. He NEVER
ordered her around. She got out of the car and went inside quickly.
“I don’t know what’s
happening to me Spike.” His sire said before turning around in the seat to face
him.
“If I wager a guess, I’d
say that you’re starting to accept that you are in fact a demon. You’re not
Angel the man, you’re Angel the vampire. That’s a lesson she should learn since
she’s no longer a human.”
“Are you okay?”
“Not like I haven’t
taken worse Peaches.”
“Yeah but not from... I
don’t even know anymore. For so long there was so much blood and things were
clear. Darla was my sire, you and Dru were my childer. We hunted and killed and
put up a show for the other vampires. By all accounts I was a bastard of a
sire.”
“But that was never the
case, not with me anyway, Dru’s another story.”
“Then came the curse and
I spent the better part of a decade running, trying to out run the memories. I
felt sorry for myself and sorry for everyone I’d hurt and then came Buffy. I
was happy when I was with her. I could forget just a little of the stuff that
kept me awake. I would look at her eyes and see myself through her eyes and I
needed that. With Buffy it was like I was separate from him, from the demon. I
was me and he was Angelus the demon. She let me pretend that, I believed it,
but now? I don’t see how I can make that separation anymore when it’s clearly
not true.”
“You never were
separate, just different.”
“I know I was when I
lost my soul the first time, I was. I was obsessed with her, like I was with
Dru. Only Dru was about possessing her and breaking her, but I wanted to punish
Buffy as well, I wanted to punish and possess and I couldn’t do both. Perhaps
therein lies the problem.”
“That love you have for
her manifested itself in your obsession. I don’t know what happened between the
time you got the bleedin’ soul and the time you lost it, but somewhere the
demon changed. Makes sense if you think about it, so when you completely freed
yourself of the soul, the demon lashed out.” He watched his sire devour what he’d
said.
“Lately I’ve noticed, I
don’t know to explain it...”
“You don’t have to tip
toe around the fact that you are a vampire. You don’t have to protect her
anymore.”
“Maybe it has something
to do with that, but it’s almost like little by little I’m losing my soul
again.”
“That can’t happen, we
can’t go there again.”
“Tell me about it. Maybe
I’ll have to go see the Oracles and ask them about it.”
“The who?”
“They are messengers
from the Powers That Be.”
“Those who grant
redemption.”
“Those be the ones.”
Angel looked beyond him and Spike hoped the Oracles would have some advice. He
couldn’t bear to have the soul gone again, not if it would be like last time.
“About earlier, I don’t know what happened. I shouldn’t have gotten that angry
with you over my *own* name. I’m sorry. I never thought *I’d* do that. Are you
sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine or I will be
after a warm bath and perhaps one of my sire’s famous massages?”
“Sounds like a plan. I
just gotta talk to Buffy first. Let me help you up.”
She threw the office
door open, tears streaming down her cheeks. “OH MY GOD!” Cordelia jumped off
the couch.
“Hey Cordy!”
“What’s wrong Buffy? Did
something happen?”
“Just some stuff I don’t
understand, it’s nothing, just caught me by surprise.”
“You sure?”
“I’m fine.” Cordelia
offered her a tissue and she took it. “Thanks, this was the last way I wanted
to see you again, covered in tears like a basket case.”
“PLEASE! I’ve seen worse
basket cases than you; in fact I think I was one. I thought you’d be here at
midnight, it’s almost sunrise. What happened?”
“We got delayed.”
“Well? Gimme a hug!”
Buffy was stunned at Cordelia’s kindness.
“I’m shocked.” Buffy
stated.
“What?”
“Where’s the bitch? The
attitude?”
“They still come out to
play occasionally but I’ve grown. That’s what Angel and Wes say anyway, they
couldn’t be lying, but I don’t think so. Speaking of, where are the boys?”
“Down in the car talking
I hope.”
“What happened Buffy?”
“Vampire stuff. You
don’t wanna know.”
“Angel’ll probably tell
me later, you might as well tell me now.”
“Angel will tell you?”
Angel hadn’t mentioned that he and Cordelia were friends, not *close* friends.
He said they were friends, not friends who shared *everything* and suddenly
that made her mad.
“Angel tells me
everything, well not *everything* we have our boundaries. I don’t wanna know
sex stuff or blood stuff and the same goes for what I tell him. So? What
gives?”
Just then the door
opened and Spike hobbled in leaning on Angel. “Hey Darky.”
“Spike, it’s been a
while. I’d ask how you are but you don’t look good. What happened? I ask for
the fourth time.”
“It crosses the
boundaries of our sharing Cordy.”
“So it’s a vampy sex
thing? That’s cool. Well, I’ve put in enough overtime tonight, which I fully
planned on being compensated for Mr. Broody. But I’m tired, I’m going home and
I’ll see you this afternoon. We’ll do lunch later Buffy.” With that Cordelia
Chase walked out of the office.
“She does know that I’m a
vampire right? Lunch is not exactly a possibility.”
“Silly Slayer, you can
eat, it just won’t taste the same, but it’s still good. Just put me over on the
couch Peaches.”
“No, you’re going to
sleep in my bed downstairs. We’ll do the bath later. Need help?”
“Not from you Peaches,
Slayer can help me.” He hoped Angel would take the hint that he wanted to be
alone with Buffy.
“Okay, I’m gonna check
my messages and I’ll be down.”
“Very good.” Buffy came
and they went down on the elevator and made it to Angel’s bed in silence.
“Last time I was in here
was Thanksgiving. It was a nice day.”
“Slayer, you have to
understand some stuff. Angel may love you like a man, but he is still a demon
and your sire. Perhaps he never took the time to explain what that means, he
certainly didn’t demonstrate. What you saw tonight was part of that.”
“But he hurt you.”
“Sires do that. Believe
me it was not as worse as it was when I couldn’t walk. That was worse, *much*
worse. He is our sire and he dominates us, whether he chooses to or not, he
does. When it comes to matters of his other childer, Angelus is very private.
He likes things to be between himself and his childe. That’s how he is. You
didn’t know that and he yelled at you.”
“He ordered me.”
“That’s what Sires do.
It’s their right.”
“Are you okay?”
“I’ll be fine. Just a
little weak b-”
“For which there is a
remedy.” Angel walked in carrying a mug. He passed the cup to Buffy and sat
beside Spike. “You *will* drink or I’ll make you drink.” His sire extended his
wrist and Spike was relieved Angel offered again. He sank his fangs into his
sire’s wrist and drank until the wound healed. “Better?”
“Yes.”
“Good. You always were
pig-headed and stubborn Will.”
“And you love that. You
know you do, may as well admit it.”
“You remind me too much
of me.”
“Only I didn’t eat
anyone my sire told me too. That’s why you got the soul and I didn’t.” Spike
sat back against the pillows and closed his eyes smiling.
“Whatever you say
William. You gonna sleep?”
“Yes, hopefully if you
and Slutty will leave me be.”
“It’s Buffy, okay,
Buf-fy, learn it well cause I’m not spending eternity being insulted Flaccid.”
“HEY!” He sat up
painfully.
“Not so funny is it?”
“I’m not insulting
your... equipment.”
“No you’re calling me a
ho and I’m not.”
“How many guys have you
slept with in the past couple years?”
“Five, if you include
Angel and yourself.”
“Who was the fifth
Buffy?” Angel asked.
“Wouldn’t you like to
know.” She smiled, got up and left.
“Later Slayer.”
“Later *vampire*.” He chuckled.
“I like her Sire.” He
said before laying back and closing his eyes.
Angel kissed him gently
on the forehead. “Me too, now sleep my William.”
She rinsed the mug out
and turned. Angel was standing in the doorway. “Hi.” He said.
“Hey.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No you’re not.”
“Yes I am.” She didn’t
feel like arguing and said nothing. “What did Spike say?”
“That part of being a
vampire is accepting the domination of your sire.”
“Do you understand why?”
“Sure, I listened to my
mother most of the time before, and you’re my daddy.”
“More or less. Come
sit?” He extended his hand and she took it. He sat on one end of the couch and
she curled up next to him. She breathed a sigh of relief as his arms encircled
her waist.
“Angel?”
“Yeah?”
“What happened?”
“I don’t know.”
“What’s Liam?”
“My name, from before I
was changed.”
“I can see why you
changed it.”
“I didn’t, Darla did. It
was better, a lot more scary. Then when I told you my name, I thought it better
to change it again.”
“Why did you do that to
Spike?”
“I’m not sure Buffy.
Sometimes it’s like I lose control, like the demon takes over, like when you
bit that guy in the ally. The demon overpowered the soul.”
“I get it, but why
that?”
“I don’t know. I guess it’s
cause I was just thinking about before when I found him. I think it was just
the memories. I always got mad when people called me that.”
“Why?” She purred as
Angel ran his fingers through her hair.
“Cause Liam was a wimp
and a loser that didn’t stand up his father. I guess it was like an insult when
I was called that. Spike knew that, he knew never to call me that and I was
already in the frame of mind.”
“Is everything okay with
him?”
“He’ll be fine and we
talked about it, so it’s cool. I think he’s still mad, he never thought I’d do
that. *I* never thought I’d do that, take him dry like that... that was mean
even for me. I never did that before.”
“Like he said, your
demon isn’t the same as it was.”
“I guess not. I don’t
wanna be your *sire* Buffy, but I am and my demon knows that. I don’t know
where those lines are or how to explain it but there are things that...”
“I get it Angel, it’s
okay. I just don’t like it when people make decisions for me. You know by now I
never much listened to the Council, or my mom or anyone for that matter. Even
when I was little, it’s in the genes. I thought we’d covered that.”
“I won’t make decisions
for you or us again Buffy, but...”
“When you’re being all
sire-like leave well enough alone?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.” She closed her
eyes and leaned into Angel’s caresses. “Who knew being a vampire was so
complicated? Who made up all these rules anyway? And where did you learn them?”
“I learned submission
from Darla and the Master. She was a good teacher. I paid attention. I never
liked it, so when I was able to make children, I did.”
“The Master? You mean
you and the Master...”
“Yes.”
“Eeww. Why?”
“He was my superior, the
sire of my sire. Just as Darla could do anything with or to my childer, he
could anything to hers.”
“Did he and Darla?”
“Of course, she was his
favorite.”
“Gross. I suddenly feel
sorry for her. I was repulsed by him when he killed me, I can’t imagine
*seeing* him naked, let alone actually having sex with him.”
“It wasn’t pleasant,
*that’s* for sure.”
“Now I’ve got a
wiggens.”
“I love you Buffy
Summers.”
“Love you too Liam.” He
growled loudly but she was sound asleep before he could protest too much. It
had been a long night. He closed his eyes as well.
THE NEXT NIGHT
He dropped the last bag on
the floor directly at the bottom of the stairs. Angel was following him and
tripped over it and fell face first on top of the box of notebooks. “And to
think they chose HIM to save the world.” Spike quipped. “Haven’t really been
here since I was lookin’ for the bloody ring. Where was it hidden anyway?
Angel?” He turned toward the loud growl, which filled the room, to find himself
eye to eye with his sire. “What? You said at least carry it to the apartment
and I did mate.”
“I didn’t say leave it
at the bottom of the stairs where I could trip.”
“But you didn’t NOT say
it either.”
“One more time Angel,
why did you pick him exactly?” She asked.
“Who knows?”
“I told you Slayer, he
liked me arse and dick. I’m gonna go upstairs to see Darky.”
“Tell me something,
Spike, is it impossible for you to call someone by their *actual* name?” Buffy
asked him on his way up the stairs. He chuckled.
“Yes, Slutty.” He went
upstairs quietly. “Hello cutie.” He said with a growl.
She turned around with a
jerk, “Oh my god, you scared me.”
“I know, I can smell
it.”
“Spike, if you’re gonna
be here you can’t go around scaring me.”
“Why? It’s so bloody
funny.”
“Cause first off you
can’t hurt me. Secondly, you’ve tried to kill me numerous times, not to mention
torturing my boss, so I’m not very open to you living here.”
“Your point?” She walked
toward him, arms behind her back.
“My point,” she whipped
a stake out from behind her arms, “is that” it was pressing into his chest “I’m
not going to put up with it from you blondie.”
“I can see why lil
Xander went for Red, she’s much sweeter.”
“CORDELIA!” Angel
screamed, running to grab the stake.
“Oh, I wasn’t going to
do it Mr. Broods-a-lot, I was just making a point.”
“Which would be?”
“I’m not tolerating a
vampire who’s tried to kill me more than once.”
“*I’ve* tried to kill
you more than once Cordelia.”
“Yes but he’s the reason
Xander and I broke up.”
“And there it is ladies
and gentleman of the jury. Just cause little boy couldn’t keep his hands offa
Red, *I* get blamed. One little kidnapping and suddenly it’s *my* fault.” Spike
said. Buffy rolled her eyes as she watched the confrontation continue.
“One little kidnapping?
ONE LITTLE KIDNAPPING? Spike it was two kidnappings and I ended up in the
hospital from that, thank you very much. Do you know what it’s like to fall on
top of a metal spike? Let’s just say it hurts and I wouldn’t have fallen
through the floor if you hadn’t kidnapped them, so it IS YOUR fault.” She
turned to Buffy quickly and walked over extending her arms, “Hi Buffy, how have
you been? Gosh the last time I saw you was when little miss psycho Faith was
roaming around town trying to kill Angel and even then I didn’t really SEE
you.” The two girls hugged and sat down on the couch.
“I’m good. Things are good.”
“And the gang?”
“Okay. We kinda parted
on neutral terms, we’re going to keep in touch, but otherwise... I don’t know.”
“Yeah don’t I know it?”
Buffy just looked at her. “Well not what your particular trouble is, but I lost
all my money and suddenly my friends didn’t want anything to do with me, so I
went out and found new friends. You’ll do the same and speaking of friends, why
do we have yet another childe of yours here Angel? Penn wasn’t enough? Had to
drag peroxide boy along, didn’t you?”
“Penn? Penn was here?”
Spike asked, surprised to hear the name after so long.
“Who’s Penn?” Buffy
asked.
“Apt pupil boy who was
tormenting Angel through his freaky dreams.”
“Dreams? Still works
does it Angelus? That’s great.”
“What the hell are you
talking about Cordy? And what the hell are the dreams?” Buffy asked.
“Oh, so there were a
series of murders and each victim’s cheek was carved with a cross. So Wesley
thought that perhaps Angel was having some midnight fun for old times’ sake. So
we chained him up the next night and there was still a murder but it turns out
it was Angel’s childe Penn. Apparently Angel has this connection with people
he’s sired. Make a long story short Penn’s dust. Wanna add anything Angel?”
“Yeah like how you could
dust your own?” Spike said enraged.
“First off Spike, I
didn’t dust him, secondly he was my childe and I can do anything I want with my
childer. You know that first hand, don’t you Spikey?” Angel was always so smug
when pulling rank.
“Yes *Sire*.”
“Anyway what do you
care? You never liked him anyway.”
“Still...”
“Is that true Angel? You
shared dreams with him?” Buffy asked.
“Not exactly. I was
dreaming *I* was doing what he was.”
“Oh. Does that happen
with Spike or me?”
“You haven’t done much.
But when Spike and Dru showed up in town I had dreams, killing dreams. I think
I actually dreamed that guy on the park bench.”
“What park bench?” Buffy
asked.
“The one Dru and I
killed together.” Spike explained.
“Oh, right. That’s
interesting.” She commented, pouring herself a cup of coffee.
“Killing isn’t
interesting, it’s fun cutie and I miss it.” Did he ever! Things hadn’t been the
same since the bloody chip.
“I didn’t mean killing,
I meant the dreams. Anyway, Cordy, it’s been a while, where were you when
psycho rogue slayer was terrorizing everyone?”
“I locked myself in my
apartment, after one black eye from her, I didn’t need another.”
“She punched you?”
“Elbowed me, it was her
elbow. Psychopathic bitch.”
“Cordelia, please don’t say
that about Faith.” Angel said.
“WHAT?” Buffy growled
upon hearing the defense. He knew he was in trouble then.
“Oh, you haven’t told
her have you?” Cordelia said walking toward Spike. “Come on peroxide boy.”
“Where are we going
Darky?”
“If you promise not to
scare, hurt or bite me or anyone else, we’re going to get coffee.”
“Why?”
“Cause he is SO in the
dog house.” She grabbed Spike’s arm and dragged him down the stairs.
“Wanna explain that?”
“Buffy, ever since Faith
was arrested I’ve been seeing her.”
“Seeing her? SEEING HER?
Like how?”
“Like visiting her. They
couldn’t arrest her for murder cause apparently the Mayor destroyed the
evidence, but she was sentenced to two years for battery.”
“And you’ve been friends
with her? And in the past few months we’ve been back together, you fail to
mention this?”
“Buffy, I didn’t... I
knew you’d be mad so I didn’t mention it, but it never came up.”
“I can’t believe this!
You’ve been seeing her behind my back.”
“Up until a few months
ago what I did wasn’t your business.”
“Yea, but have you seen
her since? When you came back here, did you see her?”
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
“I don’t know Buffy,
does it matter?”
“You left me to see
her.”
“I didn’t leave you to
see her, I went to see her when I went down to the station for research.”
“I’ll bet.”
“Buffy, she’s sorry,
she’s changed.”
“People don’t change
overnight Angel.”
“I did. You did.”
“It’s not the same and
you know it. Do you know what it was like for me? What she did to me? What she
did to us? Does that escape your attention Angel? Did you forget?”
“What have you done
Buffy?”
“What?”
“It wasn’t but a week
ago, you were asking Willow to forgive you for bad choices, wasn’t it? It
wasn’t but a few days ago you were fighting a slayer trying to explain.”
“It’s not the same.”
“Yes it is Buffy. You
both did things you’re sorry for, you both want people to understand and to
forgive you.”
“She STOLE my body
Angel, she stole it and used it to sleep with five different guys, commando
guys. Guys who hated me. She let them use me, hurt me. I had bruises on *my*
body when I got it back. She turned me into their whore. Their WHORE! Do you
know what that felt like? What it was like seeing them after that? Hearing what
they said, hearing them ask for more? And we won’t even get into the whole
poisoning episode and the help-the-Mayor-ascend thing.”
“I know all that Buffy,
she’s told me everything.”
“And you don’t care.” He
watched Buffy run out the door and thought better than to follow her.”
THE
NEXT MORNING
“So is she talking to
you?” Spike asked.
“Is she talking to you?”
Angel retorted sharply.
“She’s doing more than
talkin’ to me mate.” Spike loved to gloat. “And she was horny this morning. Too
bad she won’t let *you* into her knickers.” Angel growled and before Spike knew
it, he was thrown and pinned against the wall behind him. He couldn’t even
move, let alone escape his sire’s yellow eyes.
“Let him go Angel.”
Buffy said softly as she walked into the office. Angel released him and morphed
back before turning to face her. “I don’t understand it. I don’t want to and it
takes too much effort to hate you for it. We can agree to disagree about Faith
for a while.”
“I wouldn’t count on
that B.” Faith said, closing the door behind her as she entered the office.
