“Okay. We’ll be back in less than a half an hour, Kat.”
“We’ll be ready.” She affirmed.
“Good.” Angelus walked over to Kathryn and kissed her
deeply, while all his minions watched. Spike watched as they looked on with
envy. They were envious of her. They wanted to *be* her. It was bloody amazing.
Angelus broke away and pulled Kathryn and Spike close to
him. “Tonight is for my childe. Anyone messes up, I will spare no life. First
priority is getting the slayer back here. And if either one of our lives are
jeopardized, each and every one of you are expected to give your life to
protect us. These are the codes we follow. No blood shed tonight until after
the slayer is dead. I do *not* need half my clan disappearing. Let’s go.” The
minions started filing out of the room and he turned to Kathryn. “We will be
back soon. Stay alert, and stay safe.”
“Luck is with you, Angelus. I know it is.”
Angelus laughed. “Not luck, fate. Fate is with me, Kat.
The slayer will dance her last dance tonight.”
He walked to the door, and she called after him.
“ANGELUS!” She ran to him and attacked his lips again. “Come home to me.” She
pleaded.
“I wouldn’t dream of anything else.”
She was scared. She’d heard all the stories about
slayers. “You should try to hurry.” She almost challenged.
“Try to hurry? I’ll be fucking Speedy Gonzalez.” He
answered, pulling her into him.
“I doubt you could take her in under ten minutes. You’re
good, but you’re not *that* good.”
“Oh yeah? Wanna make a bet?” He said, knowing that she
bet things when she was scared. And he could tell by looking at her that she
was scared of losing him.
“Yes. I do.” She answered.
“What are the terms?”
“If *I* win, and it takes more than ten minutes, then
you’re my slave for twenty-four hours and you do what and whom I say.” She
kissed his neck. “For example, if I say that every minion we have can fuck you,
you have to let them.”
“You’re pushing it, Kathryn.”
“If you’re so sure of yourself, then prove me wrong. Take
the bet and take less than ten minutes. And I’m sending Spike with a watch.”
She said, licking his lips.
“What if I win?”
“Same deal. I’ll be your slave for twenty-four hours. You
can chain me up, fuck me, deny me release, and make me fuck myself on a
goddamned fire hydrant. I don’t care. Just take less than ten minutes to get
her.” She said, near tears. She couldn’t hide her fear from him much longer.
“I promise. I’ll be home in under a half and hour. Have
the ritual set up.”
“Okay.” She whimpered as he pulled away.
“And Kat?” He said before closing the door. “That’s a
bet.” He winked and closed the door behind him, leaving ten minions behind to
protect her and Drusilla. Among those left behind was the eldest of his
minions, Todd, who was sixty years old.
“He’ll be okay, right, Todd?”
“Master Angelus is strong and *very* skilled. It will be
eight minutes. Shall we make the preparations?”
“Yes. Let’s.”
---------------------------
“Nervous?” He whispered to William.
“Never. You?”
“Never.” Angelus replied, but the looks in their eyes
showed the truth. “She’ll be fine. I know this will work.” They were hiding
behind a few crates in the alley. Angelus looked around and could sense all his
minions in their assigned spots. Some were on rooftops, others were waiting
inside the windows of the abandoned apartments above them.
They heard footsteps drawing near and everyone tensed.
The girl entered the alley, just as planned. “Oh damn it.” She said. “Forgot
the damn cab fare.” She turned to leave, when one of his minions stepped in
front of her, growling. Stupid idiot. He knew the girl was not the slayer. She
did not exude confidence.
“What’s he doing? That’s not her.” William whispered, as
he’d seen her on the Hellmouth.
“NO. But *I* am.” A voice came from behind them, as
William was thrown into the wall behind them.
“WILLIAM!” Angelus followed his childe with his eyes,
only to be kicked in the gut.
“SLAYER!” Both vampires
growled as they regained their footing.
“Vampires!” She mocked.
“I hear you were lookin’ for me.” The dark-haired girl said. “My name’s Faith.
What’s yours?”
“NOW!” Angelus screamed as the minions dropped from their
positions.
“OH NO! A WHOLE LOTTA VAMPIRES! GLAD I DIDN’T COME
ALONE!” She screamed, and Angelus saw about ten guys with crossbows at the end
of the alley.
“Fuck.” He whispered.
10
---------------------------
“Drusilla, are you awake?”
“I can’t see.”
“I know.” Kathryn held the fragile vampiress’ hand. “I
know, but Angelus and Spike are going for the cure. You’ll be better soon.” She
whispered.
“The moon stopped singing. It’s dark and without the
light, she cannot sing.” Drusilla murmured.
“Hush. Just rest. We’ll be starting the ritual soon.”
“I can’t hear the moon and she worries, and she doesn’t
talk.” Dru said frantically. “I must see her. I must see.” Drusilla begged,
grabbing Kathryn’s shirt.
“Just calm down, Dru. You’ll see the moon soon enough.”
“NO!” Dru screamed. “BLOOD EVERYWHERE! FLYING DEATH!”
“Shh…” Kathryn whispered, silently wishing for the door
to open.
“My mum used to sing the sweetest song. Run and catch.
Run and catch. The lamb is caught in the blackberry patch.”
And Kathryn held Dru for a few minutes, singing her back
to sleep.
---------------------------
Kathryn was pacing. It had been forty-five minutes.
Forty-five minutes. He had said thirty. “Less than thirty. That’s what he
said.” She muttered.
“I’m sure everything is fine. Probably just got hungry on
the way.” Todd said, trying to reassure his sire’s mate.
“NO. He said no bloodshed until the slayer died.”
“Just make sure we have everything prepared for the
ritual. They are on their way. I’m sure.”
“They better be.” Just then the door swung opened and she
noticed bruises and cuts on the minions. A few of them had arrows lodged in
them.
“OH GOD!” Todd gasped. And he flew into action, while
Kathryn was frozen. She watched as minions limped into the room. The first had
a gash on his head. “What happened?” Todd asked, running to help them.
“An ambush.” Kathryn gasped, as the minion continued.
“The slayer, she knew what we were planning. They… they sent a decoy, and there
were ten of them, with crossbows. We lost a lot. At least five, maybe more.”
“What of the slayer?” Todd asked.
“I don’t know. All of us rushed at her, but she was
beating Master William, and there were arrows flying all over.”
“Angelus…” Kathryn started to shake. She ran to the minion
and growled. “WHERE IS ANGELUS?”
“I don’t know.” The minion struggled to stand up right as
he continued. “They were hiding behind crates, and the slayer was there, behind
the crates with them. We couldn’t get to them. They were coming for us an-”
Kathryn growled and grabbed a nearby chair. She threw it
against the wall and grabbed one of the legs. She went after the minion. “HE
SAID TO GUARD HIM WITH YOUR LIFE! NOW WHERE THE FUCK IS MY MATE?”
“Kathryn.” Todd said. “This will solve nothing. This was
war, and-”
“DON’T FUCKING TALK TO ME ABOUT THAT. I’M GOING TO FIND
HIM!” She was right at the door, when she saw Spike and Nathan walk in dragging
a girl behind them. Both were limping, Spike had a couple arrows through him,
one was very close to his heart. The elevator door closed, as they hobbled into
the apartment. “Angelus?” She whispered to them, but both vampires looked at
her and shook their heads. “NOOOOOOO!” She screamed as she fell, shaking, to
the floor.
11
Two minions took the slayer from Spike and Nathan, and
Spike rushed to Kathryn’s side. She was shaking and screaming, and he knew what
she was going through because he’d watched Angelus go through the same thing
when Darla died.
On the way back, he had
kept going over the scene in his head. Arrows were shooting, and vampires were
turning to dust, minions they’d been with a long time were gone in an instant.
His sire and himself had headed for the slayer, but she was strong. A few
minions that were close by had tried fighting her, but she made quick dust of
them. Her friends were quickly advancing on them, and Nathan was able to
distract her enough for another minion to knock her out. “WILL!” Angelus had
screamed, as he headed towards the oncoming council members. “Get her back to
Dru!” He had screamed, and that was the last he’d seen of his sire. Nathan had
grabbed him as he fell from the two arrows that had gone through him. And
together, with the few remaining minions, they had gotten into the sewers under
one of the crates undetected.
But he didn’t feel the
emptiness of his sire being gone, he just felt empty. “We must do the ritual
quickly. They will be looking for her.” Todd said.
“I’ll look after her.”
Nathan said, speaking of Kathryn.
“Right then. Let’s make
this slaughter not for waste.” Spike said. And he headed back to the room where
Drusilla was laying. “Dru, Luv…”
“Spike! You came back! I
can’t hear the moon… where did she go?”
“She’ll be back. Start
the chant.” He demanded. He held Drusilla up. “You’ve gotta drink, Luv. Drink
deep and drink it all.” And he held the slayer’s neck to Dru’s mouth and was
relieved as she sank her fangs into the tender slayer skin. “That’s it, Luv.
Drink it up. Be well.”
Drusilla fell asleep after
the slayer’s heart stopped and he left her there. He walked out of the room and
Todd pulled the arrows out of his body. Spike went into the bedroom where
Kathryn had been moved. She was curled in the middle of the bed, quiet, all her
tears had been cried.
He sat down next to her.
“Kathryn? The ritual is complete.”
“Go away.” She said.
“I know it’s hard, bu-”
“FUCK YOU! YOU LEFT HIM!
WHY DID YOU LEAVE HIM? YOU COULD HAVE SAVED HIM, BUT YOU CARED MORE ABOUT DRU!
HE WAS YOUR SIRE AND YOU LEFT HIM TO DIE! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!” She ordered.
And she was right. He had failed. He deserved to be thrown out of the clan.
“We don’t know that he’s
dead.”
“You said you saw it
with your own eyes. He didn’t make it out of the alley. You left him behind and
he died. He’s gone. And he was my mate, and what’s his is mine, and I say
you’re not part of this family anymore.” She said. Kathryn stood up. “I’m
taking my place at the head of this clan. And you’re not in it anymore. Get
out.”
“No. I’m his favored
chil-”
“Were. You *were* his
favored childe, until you left him to die. Get out.” She pushed him out the
door and into the living room where all the minions were gathered around. The
room hushed as all eyes focused on her. “Listen up! William the Bloody is, from
this moment on, forbidden any contact with any member of this clan. He is
extricated from this clan and is to be forgotten.”
“On what charge?” One
minion challenged.
“On the same charge that
will see you all dead for abandoning your Master, if you have that much to say
about it.” The minion quickly sat down.
“You can’t do that!”
Spike protested. “You don’t have the right.”
“Like hell I don’t. I’m
his mate. What’s his is mine. He’s dead, and *I’m* in charge.”
“You are *not* his mate,
Luv.”
“WHAT?” She growled.
“He never claimed you.
You haven’t even been declared his mate by the Master. *I’m* his favored
childe. You’re nothing but his whore, his minion whore. Until he takes you to
the Master and you are mated, you’re nothing to him, or to this clan.” He saw
the hurt flash across her face at his words.
“NATHAN.” She growled.
“Is this the truth?”
“It is the code. You are
not technically mated until the Master grants such a union, but his intentions
have been very clear, you were to be mated. But you are not yet his declared
mate.” He whispered. “I’m sorry, Kathryn, but William is the head of the clan,
as you cannot be mated to… to dust.”
She turned to Spike, her
eyes begging forgiveness for what she’d tried to do.
12
He could technically
kick her out of the clan. She couldn’t lose the only family she had left.
Things wouldn’t ever be the same. He was gone, and she would be lonely. She bit
back the tears and embarrassment and stood in front of Spike. “Master William,
I’m sorry.” She said through the tears. “I-”
“Hush, Kathryn.” He
said, and he put his finger to her lips. He turned from away from her, towards
the room of minions. She was expecting his words of her exile. “We assume my
Sire, Angelus, our Lord and Master, is dead. There is no way he could have
survived. We are all saddened extremely by his departure, and we shall grieve
for weeks.” Spike then pulled Kathryn to him and held her as she cried. “I am
deeply distraught by this turn of events, but no more so than his intended. She
is newly risen, and doesn’t understand our ways yet as Angelus did not have
time enough to teach her. This outburst is forgiven and forgotten by me, as
well it should be from everyone in this room.” He said. Kathryn looked up at
him as he continued to address the room. “Lady Angelus is distraught and
looking for someone to blame. I think we all share the blame, but the slayer is
dead and his death was not in vain.”
“I’m so sorry.” Kathryn
whispered into his ear.
“No worries, Luv.” He
whispered to her. “Go rest, you need it.” He said.
“Can you just hold me a
little while longer?” She whimpered softly.
“Of course.” He said
before turning back to the group. “I am assuming leadership of the clan, until
such a time when the Master makes other arrangements, or makes my leadership official.
Keep hunting to a minimum, the Council will be looking for revenge for their
fallen slayer. And I want a team in the alley until the last second before
sunrise looking for any evidence of what transpired after we were told to
leave.”
“Seems like an awful
lotta trouble, when I can just tell you.” Came a familiar voice from the back
of the group.
“ANGELUS?” Kathryn
screamed. She turned and the minions parted, as he limped through the doorway.
“ANGELUS!” She screamed as she ran to his arms. “Angelus! I thought you were
dead! They said you were dead!” She wrapped her arms around him and they
kissed.
He whimpered in pain,
but it felt good to be in her arms. Everyone was worried, he knew that, but
he’d been dodging Council members trying to get home. He’d finally been able to
take out the last one outside the door downstairs. “Kat…” he whimpered. “Let me
sit, Kat.”
“SIRE!” William shouted,
running towards him.
“Calm down. Kat, please…
what happened with the ritual?” He asked, as he sat between Kat and his childe.
“The moon smiles at the
tea party, but she fears the pot is all dried up, so she sends lemon juice
instead.” Came a voice from the archway. “My Angel! You’re back all together. I
knew you would be, my sweet.” Drusilla walked in and sat in Spike’s lap. “I’m
all new again.” She giggled. “And I’m so much stronger than yesterday, my
pets.”
Angelus looked around.
“The last member of the Council that ambushed us is dead on the building’s
doorstep. I’m sure the police will take care of it in the morning. All is safe
for us. As you can see, I am whole, and alive, and in charge. I expect everyone
back here at sunset tomorrow and we will sort through the events of this
evening. For now, I need to be alone with my family.”
And Kathryn watched as
the minions left. Todd and Nathan nodded to them as they left too.
“Sire, I’m so glad that
you’re safe.” William said.
“Will, I couldn’t be
prouder of you.” Angelus watched as his childe’s face lit up. He’d never said
that to William before. “You handled the situation well. I heard your speech,
and am glad you respected Kathryn enough not to embarrass her. I am also proud
you took charge as much as you did. I didn’t think you had it in you. But from
the way you’re eyeing Dru, I can tell you want some alone time.” Angelus stood
up slowly and put his hand out to Kathryn. “Come on, Kat. You can play nurse.”
“And collect on my bet.
I won. That was *way* longer than ten minutes.”
“I’m an injured vamp,
here.”
“And I’ll let you
recover. And then you can pay up. And I’ve got *big* plans.”
“I’m sure you do, Kat.
I’m sure you do.”
