PART 17 (PG - Waiting For You)

She looked for him for two weeks. He was gone. She searched LA, and called her mother and explained. She had searched every square foot of the city twenty times over, but she couldn’t find him. He had vanished and she had other things to worry about. “Goodbye Angel.” She whispered as she left his apartment for the last time. She carried with her all he left: his clothes, his books and his weapons. She went back home, and took the mansion back. It was the closet she could be to him. She had his bed and the blankets they had laid on. No one could explain the phenomenon, but she continued moving on, she had to be ready. She thought about selling some of his stuff, for money but she couldn’t. She quit school and her father gave her some money, and she worked for the rest in between slaying. She tried finding him and every Friday night she sent the same request to every radio station she could find that would play it. Every Friday at nine at night, within two months 150 radio stations nationwide played her request. But she never got any response. She needed him, she couldn’t face this by herself, but she didn’t want him to come unless he wanted to, not because of the circumstances, or because he felt he had to. Every Friday night she would listen to the song and cry herself to sleep. Where was her Angel now?

PART 18 (PG - Anniversary)

Three years. It had been three years. He hadn’t called and he hadn’t written, he couldn’t. He killed their child and he couldn’t even imagine her eyes. It was late, he was wandering around the village. He had been oddly accepted, he had expected to be killed. But they had brought him in, taught him the language, the old teachings, stories... he had learned willingly, almost become one of them, he wondered why? But since he had no other place to go, he stayed. The eldest woman was his main teacher and this night she came to him.

“Angel... you have been here three years, it is time.”

“What? Time for what?” Four men grabbed him.

“Time for the ritual.” She said in her Rumanian  tongue. They knocked him out and when he came to he couldn’t move, they had him pinned down in a circle. There was a fire all around him and he almost hoped it was the end. Would they finally finish the revenge they had sought over a hundred years ago?

She sat in the living room reading a book she had read over a hundred times, it was a journal. She wondered how it had managed to get saved all this time, it was over 200 years old, it was his from when he was a child. She had read it out loud and to herself, and every time she read it she understood more about the man and the vampire inside. She believed now that some of his anger as a vampire, had been resentment of his father, his father wasn’t very nice, in fact he had been abusive and cruel. She also found a journal of his recounts of his vampire activities and his time in New York after the curse. He had never mentioned the existence of such things, but it made her feel closer to him. Willow suggested that he had staked himself, but she didn’t feel it inside, he wasn’t dead, he was just away. She had to believe that for her sake.

It had been three years and she had gained complete memory of the night, which had given her a child. She also remembered the night that her future had been taken away. It was late and she fell asleep on the couch with his sweater in her arms and his book held tightly against her.

He heard chanting going on and he didn’t understand, he thought he could speak the language, but this was old. He just lay there because he couldn’t do anything else, he felt pain surge through him and a fire in his eyes and he slipped into unconsciousness.

PART 19 (PG - Angel Dedication)

He was in a rental car, speeding down the freeway. It was Friday night, a week since the ritual, and he was listening to the radio. “And now we have, as everyone knows... the Angel dedication.” He turned it up. “As all our faithful listeners know, we’ll play the song in a minute.”

Another DJ came on, “Yes, I don’t think some people realize what a tradition this has become. For all you new listeners, for the past three years, we have had this same dedication from a girl who is anxiously awaiting her Angel’s return. Over a thousand radio stations all across the country now play this request every Friday night. If I were this guy, I’d call her, three years? That’s a long time to be waiting for a guy.”

“If I were her, I’d say enough is enough, find a new boyfriend.” The other DJ said. “Anyway, the Angel dedication is a three year tradition, and apparently the girl has quite a following, we get letters for her everyday but no one knows who she is. I suppose only he does. Anyway, here it is... going out to Angel, wherever you are.”

He pulled the car over to the side of the road and heard her voice for the first time in three years when she had called him. “Angel, my Angel... if you’re out there my love... I know we don’t have everything we want, but I need you, take time, know that I forgive you and that we have forever, so take all the time you need, I’ll be right here waiting for you to return. I love you Angel, believe that and know I don’t blame you, I love you. Come back to me!”

//Oceans apart day after day, and I slowly go insane.

I hear your voice on the line, but it doesn’t stop the pain.

If I see you next to never, how can we say forever?

Wherever you go, whatever you do

I will be right waiting for you.

Whatever it takes, oh how my heart breaks,

I will be right here waiting for you.

I took for granted all the times that I thought would last somehow.

I hear the laughter, I taste the tears,

but I can’t get near you now.

Oh, can’t you see it, baby, you’ve got me goin’ crazy.

Wherever you go, whatever you do

I will be right waiting for you.

Whatever it takes, oh how my heart breaks,

I will be right here waiting for you.

I wonder how we can survive this romance.

But in the end if I’m with you, I’ll take the chance.

Oh, can’t you see it, baby, you’ve got me goin’ crazy.

Wherever you go, whatever you do

I will be right waiting for you.

Whatever it takes, oh how my heart breaks,

I will be right here waiting for you.

Waiting for you.//

By the end of the song he was in tears.

A hundred miles away she was laying in bed listening and crying. Her body ached for him, her heart was broken and she tried to be happy for her benefit, but there was something missing, she knew it.

He called up and made a request and dedication.

She was crying and listening to the DJ. “Okay, here’s something new... a new part of a three year saga, I think we have just spoken with the Angel and so if the girl is out there somewhere, honey... here it is.” She sat up.

“My love, my life... I’m sorry for everything. I love you.” She screamed out. “Know that everything I have done, I did for you, for us. I love you, you are my angel.”

//Look into my eyes and you will see, what you mean to me.

Search your heart, search your soul,

and when you find me there you’ll search no more.

Don’t tell me it’s not worth trying for.

Can’t tell it’s not worth dying for.

You know it’s true.

Everything I do, I do it for you.

Look into your heart and you will find, nothing there to hide.

Take me as I am, take my life,

I would give it all I would sacrifice.

Don’t tell me it’s not worth fighting for.

I can’t help it, there’s nothing I want more.

You know it’s true.

Everything I do, I do it for you.

There is no love, like your love,

and no other, could more love.

There’s nowhere unless you’re there,

all the time all the way.

Look into your heart babe.

Oh! You can’t tell me it’s not worth trying for.

I can’t help it, there’s nothing I want more.

Yeah I would die for you. I’d lie for you,

Walk the world for you. Yeah I’d die for you.

You know it’s true.

Everything I do, oh, I do it for you.//

He was back on the road and she was shaking from the tears.

PART 20 (PG - Glimpses)

She was at the park Saturday, it was her day off and she was watching the slides. Watching children always made her happy, they were so carefree. She was reading a book glancing up every now and then. Suddenly she felt it. She looked around but she couldn’t see anything but she felt it inside.

He was watching her sitting, reading. He looked down at his hand, he was glad he hadn’t destroyed the ring, he was standing in the shadows now. She hadn’t changed much, she looked a little thinner but still the same beautiful blond hair, long and silky. He watched her look around and was glad she gave up looking. Then he watched a small little girl run up to her. The little girl was screaming, “Mommy! Mommy!” She picked up the little girl and hugged her. Could it be? He stepped out of the light and walked toward them, her back was turned to him.

            “Mommy! Look!”

“I know, you’re all dirty... we’ll have to get you in a bath when we get home.”

“Are we going to Aunt Willow’s?”

“Probably not, I thought we’d go get some sandwiches and maybe some chocolate milk and cookies  and have a picnic. How does that sound?”

“Good! Can we sit in our spot?”

“Of course we can silly. Don’t we always? That’s what makes it our spot.”

            “Mommy, look, a man...”

Buffy whipped around and gasped. “Angel.”

            “Buffy.”

PART 21 (PG - Reunion)

            “Mommy, who’s that?”

“Honey, this is a friend of Mommy’s... his name is Angel.”

            “Hi Angel.”

            “Hi there.”

“Mommy and I are going to have a picnic.” The little girl then whispered something in Buffy’s ear.

            “Of course honey.”

“Mister like to come to picnic with us?”

            “Are you sure Buffy?”

            “Yes, do you want to?”

            “Sure.”

“Honey, why don’t you go slide for a couple minutes, okay?”

            “Okay, bye bye.”

“And stay where Mommy can see you.” She shouted after the girl.

“When di...” he couldn’t stand it, seeing her again he had to. He pulled her into his arms and began kissing her passionately but she pulled away.

            “Buffy... I’m... I’m sorry.”

“Angel we can’t... things are different.”

“Oh, this isn’t... oh, oh God... you’re involved with someone... I’m sorry...” he started walking away and he heard the little girl behind him.

            “Mommy! We gonna picnic?”

“Yes baby, come here. Angel! Wait!” He stopped and turned around. “Angel, wait,” she caught up with him. “I’d like to formally introduce you to your daughter.” He froze. “Hannah, honey, you know how Mommy is always telling you about Daddy and how one day he will come home to us?”

            “Yes Mommy...”

“Well, honey, you look at this man and you ask him...” she whispered into the child’s ear.

The girl giggled and turned to him and put her arms out to him and he took her and a tear fell down his cheek. She whispered in his ear, “Mommy wants to know if you’re going to stay forever.”

He smiled at the girl and said to her, “You can tell your Mommy the answer is yes.”

            “MOMMY! He said yes!”

“I know, I heard. Hannah, love, this is your Daddy baby.”

“Daddy? My Daddy!” She hugged him and he cried. “Don’t cry Daddy! Mommy always cries. Don’t cry! Don’t be sad!”

Buffy walked over and leaned against him and he put his arm around her waist, as she explained to the child, “Hannah, sometimes grown ups cry because we’re really happy, not because we’re sad.”

            “Oh... that’s confusing.”

“Where’d you learn that word Hannah?” She asked her daughter.

“Aunt Willow told me we need to work on my vocabulary. Like supercalif... supersal... what’s the word again Momma?”

            “Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious.”

            “Yeah, that word.”

PART 22 (PG - Picnic)

They ate sandwiches and Hannah went to chase butterflies.

            “Angel, where did you go?”

“Buffy, I went to Europe, I went home for a couple months and then I went to Rumania.”

            “Why?”

“I don’t know. I found the place where I was cursed and an old woman there. I lived with them for three years Buffy. I learned their language, their customs, and I told them about me and my life and what happened.”

            “Why did you come back?”

“Because I missed you and I wanted to see if it wasn’t too late. I heard the song last night.”

“I know, I heard it too, I’ve heard it every Friday night for the past three years.”

“Buffy, how can Hannah be? How does that work? They said I killed her.”

“I don’t know, I thought she was too, but a couple months after left I noticed I was getting a little bigger and then I felt a kick, and she is quite the kicker. I guess since technically I died too and came back, she did too.”

“Was she affected by the blood?”

“I don’t know, she gets a really scrunchy funny face when she gets really mad, and sometimes I swear her eyes get yellow, and she’s got really strong teeth, but other than that, I don’t know. Oh she is really strong too, and smart, boy I wish I had concentrated more in school, she out smarts me sometimes. She’s also very stealthy, I have to lock the cookies up, although she did break the lock yesterday. I don’t know, the doctor said she’s in perfect health aside from being a little tall for her age.”

            “That’s good, and you?”

“Me?  Well, it’s only been three years, ask me again in 20 and we’ll see if the immortal thing really took hold.” He cracked a smile. “And look at you in the sun and all... how swanky huh?”

            “Oh Buffy, I’m not...”

“I know... the kiss, your tongue... cold... I know... it’s the ring, huh?”

“Yeah, I lied, I never destroyed it, I just told them I did. I hid it very well, so well in fact I had forgotten where, but I found it. I stopped in LA on my way in. Where’s everything?”

“In my house, in the mansion, I moved back there, Hannah loves having so many rooms to play in. If only she knew how much of her own history there was there.”

“I have to tell you something else Buffy.”

“I know... we still can’t be together, but now we have a daughter now and you can’t just drop in and leave when you see fit. You left before and I dealt, but she needs you.”

“Buffy...” he looked down at her hand. “You still wear it.”

“Of course I do Angel, I’ll always be yours, despite the physical, I love you, not your sex... I mean, I loved that too, but...”

“Buffy, we can be together... completely.”

            “What did you say?”

            “Buffy...”

“Mommy Mommy, look Momma, look what I found!” She came running up with a mouse. “I think it’s dead.”

“Yes honey and what did we talk about? What did we say about picking up dead animals?”

“Not to.” She dropped it on the grass.

            “And why not?”

            “Because they have germs.”

“That’s right and you need to respect other animals honey and if the mouse died, the mouse is going to stay there so her family can find her and take her home.”

            “Okay Mommy, sorry. No mad?”

“Never mad! You know that.” The child again whispered into Buffy’s ear. “Of course, just ask him.”

“Can I sit in your lap?”

“Sure, come on... I happen to have a very good lap.” She took his hand.

“Your hand is colder than Mommy’s, like Uncle Spike’s hand!”

            “Uncle Spike?”

“Long story... it’s a long story. Hannah why don’t you tell Daddy something.”

            “Can I call you Daddy?”

“Of course if you want to.”

            “Guess what?”

            “What?”

            “You guessed it.” He smiled.

            “That’s pretty funny.”

“Yeah, I know, Mommy told me it.”

“You know what...” Buffy laid down and put her head on his knee, her daughter on the other one. “Did you know that I had a sister named Hannah?”

“Yes, Mommy told me about how you and Aunt Hannah would go for rides on Saturday afternoons.”

He looked down at her. “How did you know that Buffy?”

            “Your journals.”

            “You found them?”

“Yes... Hannah, tell Daddy your middle name.”

            “Abigail, I’m Hannah Abigail.”

“I also had a sister Abigail.”

“I know. Mommy can I go catch a butterfly?”

“Of course, just stay where I can see you.” Hannah left. “So what did you say?”

“The last night I was there with them, four of them grabbed me and tied me up, I thought they were going to kill me, but they lifted the curse and put a new one on me.”

“What do you mean a new one?”

“They said I had suffered and you had suffered and that Janna was right, it was crazy and it had backfired on everyone and they said I had to protect the little one not destroy her, I didn’t know what she meant until now.”

            “So what, no happiness clause?”

“No happiness clause, permanent custody and control of my soul and happiness.”

“Well, I know what we’re doing tonight after Hannah’s asleep. Got plans?”

“Now I do.” He laid back and Hannah came over and laid on his chest. “Buffy?”

            “Mmm?”

“Did I ever tell you about this ring?”

            “What?”

“The Claddaugh rings were basically given as an unofficial marriage vow, a ring of commitment, of undying devotion. Unofficially, we’re married.”

“I guess we’ve got that one covered, huh? The til death do us part clause really doesn’t apply to us, we seem to beat that every time. So we’re married, huh? Were you planning on telling me anytime?”

“I suppose so, eventually. But as you recall the last time we tried that death do us part, I went to hell, let’s not put it to the test again. So I basically propsed then, and you’ve been my wife.”

“Huh, how about that, and here I thought it was just a birthday present.”

PART 23 (PG - Back In Town)

Dusk had fallen and they were back at the mansion and Buffy was getting ready to go out. He was sitting in the kitchen and he heard the door open. “AUNT WILLOW! Guess what?”

            “What Hannah?”

“My Daddy came home.” Buffy ran through the kitchen.

            “Your Daddy?”

            “Uncle Spike!”

            “Hey cutie, what’s going on?”

            “I was just finding rats.”

“Shh, Mommy isn’t suppose to know about that.” Just then he looked up in the doorway and saw Angel standing there.

“You’re gonna say it huh Uncle Spike?” Hannah asked him.

“What Hannah?” Spike asked the child.

“Bloody h...” he put his hand over her mouth and smiled at Buffy.

“That’s enough of that... I told you you’re not suppose to tell Mommy these things. They are secrets.”

“Mommy said I should not keep your secrets.”

“Well, that’s probably a good policy.” The child ran off giggling.

“Betcha can’t get me!” He ran after her. Willow walked over the Angel and gave him a hug.

“Welcome home brooding stranger, is it permanent?”

“Yes Willow, how could I leave again?”

“Mommy Mommy! Help me help me!” She jumped into Buffy’s arms. “HELP ME! The monster is coming! The monster is coming!”

“Oh no! The monster is coming! Why don’t you go hide in your room, I’ll come put you to bed when I’m going to leave.” Spike entered the room and unvamped. “Spike, you shouldn’t do that... she shouldn’t learn to be overly friendly with vampires.”

“Yeah but she’s so cute... she gives me a run for my money.” He looked up, “Angel... how’s it going?”

“Apparently better for you than for me at this instant. Would someone explain what the hell is going on?”

“I will later, I’ll go put her to bed.”

“Aw, Buffy, we were going to hunt for rabbits out back.”

“Spike... a little kid hunting for rabbits, what do you do with them, break their necks?”

“No, we pet them she likes the feel of them... it’s fun.”

“Tomorrow night maybe, she had a busy day. I’m going to put her to bed.”

Angel followed her upstairs but didn’t go in the room. He watched from the hallway. “Okay kiddo, pajamas... bed time, I’ll give you a bath in the morning. K?”

“K Momma... will Uncle Spike come tomorrow?”

“You know he can’t... but he’ll be here tomorrow night for our picnic, and you might be able to go outside with him if you want.”

“Oh boy! I like it when he plays monster.”

“Yeah, I know... but what did we say about monsters?”

            “Only Uncle Spike...”

“That’s right. Hannah,” Buffy glanced back at Angel, “Hannah, we have to add to that rule.”

            “What Momma?”

“Honey, Daddy has a monster face too, but Daddy’s like Uncle Spike, he’s a good monster, just like there are good witches.”

            “Like Aunt Willow?”

“Right there are good witches like Aunt Willow and there are bad witches.”

            “Momma, can I see?”

“You’ll have to ask Daddy.” Angel walked in the room and stood behind Buffy.

            “Buffy...”

“Angel, she has to know about these things... so if she sees something she can explain it... monster is just a name we picked, like Cookie Monster and Elmo and... who else?”

“Grover, I like Grover, he’s funny.”

“Yeah you like Grover, but you love Cookie Monster, you little monster.”

            “Hey, I’m not a monster...”

“Oh yeah, who broke the cookie jar?” The little girl looked away. “That’s what I thought.”

            “Can I Daddy?”

            “How about tomorrow?”

“Okay, are you going to read to me?”

“Buffy,” Willow said walking into the room, “Giles just called, possibly a monster starting with the letter d... I’ll do story duty tonight, maybe we can tell Beauty and the Beast.”

            “YEAH!” The little girl cheered.

“NO!” Buffy said. “Willow every time you do Beauty and the Beast you end up telling the whole movie staring Spike as Gaston and the Beast... it takes too long, that’s like puppet theatre, tomorrow, just a simple little story, no magic...”

            “Momma...”

“Yeah, Momma...” Spike whined as he entered the room.

“Spike, don’t encourage her. Ready to go?” She said to Angel.

            “Go where?”

            “Patrolling.”
