Coke Bottle Angel
This papier mache' project works pretty fast considering the medium. It requires a pretty good size space to work in if you are making many of them as I did (100), or at minimum a space you can walk away from for a day or so.
The project called for:
- a package of white wrapping tissue
- a small round balloon
- an 8 oz. Coke bottle, empty
- Elmer's glue
- water
- long pipe cleaner
- white shirt cardboard or gold paste board
- gold glitter
- yarn (yellow, brown, or some hair color)
- assorted craft stuff (sequenes, beads, lace)
- thread
- ribbon
- scissors
- Exacto knife
- water colors and markers
- stapler
- hot glue gun (optional)
- an old pie tin or plactic tub

Instructions:
- Cut tissue papers into 1-2 inch strips.
- In an old pie tin or plactic tub (recycle), mix a solution of 50-50 of glue and water. Lay enough strips to start in the solution. You'll add more as you go along, but you may not need all at once. Note: if you need to take a break or walk away from the project for a while, cover the tub with plastic wrap and add a little more water when you return if necessary.
- Inflate the balloon, tie-off the end.
- Cover the Coke bottle and the balloon in strips about 1/8-1/4 inch thick.
- Allow to set until dry.
- Make a wig. Cut yarn into a half dozen or more 18 inch lengths and the same number of 12 inch ones. Thread a needle. Starting with the 12 inch lengths, string them together about three inches from one end. Reverse and repeat as often as necessary to form an inch square patch. Lay the remaining 18 inch yarn lengths crosswise to the first set at the exact middle. Stitch each to the patch. Leave loose until you've attached it to the head.
- Make halo. Using about half or 3-1/2" for a tail, form a 2" diameter loop and fold over perpendicular to the tail. Dip the loop portion only in glue until it is completely saturated; then dip in gold glitter.
- Using Exacto knife, cut the Coke bottle form at two opposite sides. Remove bottle. Glue sides back together using more strips of papier mache'. Deflate the balloon and attach to the top of bottle form also using more strips of papier mache'. Leaving the bottle or balloon in too long may result in uneven drying and mildew.
- Allow to dry.
- Cut and attach wings using stapler or hot glue gun (didn't have one when I did the project initially).
- Attach wig and halo. Attach the wig patch, then attach halo so that the wig hides the attachment of the halo tail. Then, arrange the hair so that it hangs loosely over the head form, weaving it into braids. Fix ends with thread twists and then tie small bows on the ends. Trim bangs and ends as necessary.
- Trim and decorate with more ribbon, yarn, sequenes, and glitter.
Paint face with water colors and markers.
