Paul
Jennings worked as a special-education teacher, then speech pathologist,
then became senior lecturer at Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education
(now part of Deakin University) before turning to full-time writing.
Helping children learn to read, particularly those with difficulties, has
been a huge motivator throughout his career.
Jennings is a
phenomenon in the world of children's books. Since the publication of Unreal
in 1985, he has been entertaining children of all ages with his tales of
the strange and the fantastic, encouraging them to become enthusiastic,
skilled readers. Paul has been voted 'favourite author' by children in
Australia over forty times and has won every children's choice award in
the country. He has written more than one hundred stories, and sales of
his books exceed 6.7 million copies.
His most recent
books include Tongue-Tied!, his tenth book of short stories, which
won the 2002 Young Australians Best Books Award (YABBA), and The
Cabbage Patch Pong, the third book in the Cabbage Patch series. He is
also the creator of the much-loved Singenpoo and Gizmo
books, co-creator (with Terry Denton and Ted Greenwood) of Spooner or
Later, Duck for Cover and Freeze a Crowd, and the
co-creator (with Morris Gleitzman) of the best-selling serialised novels, Wicked!
and Deadly!. The top-rating TV series 'Round the Twist' and 'Driven
Crazy' are based on a selection of his enormously popular stories.
