PREVIOUS NEWS

Welcome to the Previous News section. You'll find news previously posted on my page about the Detroit Redwings here.

Fans show their support.

- 10/12/97Detroit came back in the third period after Calgary led 3-1, tonight. Detroit ended up pulling off a tie 4-4. Stevie Y had 2 points (goal and a assist), and Kozlov scored twice to help the Wings come back. Detroit still hasn't lost a game yet! by- J.G.

- 10/11/97Detroit continues their unbeaten streak with a win last night against Tampa Bay, 3-0! Osgood get's the shutout and now has a GAA of 1.00! For the next game, Detroit will be hosting Calgary on Saturday Oct. 12. Still no word on the Fedorov situation, let's hope things work out for the best. -by J.G.

- 10/08/97Tonight was the season home opener for the Detroit Redwings and it was great!! Stevie Y held the cup again and the banners were lifted in a dramatic ceremony. Sergei and Vlady's wives stepped out on the ice and the Detroit fans showed their support. Detroit won the game against Dallas by a score of 3-1 (Detroit is now 3-0-0 this season) -by J.G.

- 10/05/97Again, my computer has kept me from updating this page. I had a hardrive failure, but everything is fixed now. The new season has begun, Detroit winning their first two games! (3-1 vs. Calgary and 8-2 vs. Edmonton!). My page will be undergoing some changes during the week: Player of the week will become available, and a new co-owner of this page will be helping me with it. Expect these changes by the end of this week. This will make my page better than ever. It will probably be updated about twice daily and I will be getting more space so I will be posting new pics soon!

- 09/28/97I'm sorry for not updating my page earlier but I've been busy (NHL 98 was released...what can I say...IT'S AWESOME). To get back up-to-date, Detroit lost tonight's game against Boston by a score of 5-3 after winning their last game 4-0 against Boston. Some bad news has come for Detroit fans, Malts has been injured (separated left shoulder) and is expected to be out for 4 weeks. The injury occurred on Tuesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes when a player fell in front of Maltby, tripping him into the boards, his shoulder taking the full impact.

- 09/21/97Detroit wins their second game against Toronto by a score of 4-3. Hodson played fabulous but Kozlov didn't show for the 2nd and 3rd period due to a injury. No word on his injuries ,or the cause, have been made at this moment. I'll post info on it as soon as it becomes available.

UPDATE (4:00pm ET): Kozy's injuries are only minor (problems with his leg...pulled muscle). He might miss a few preseason games, that's it.

- 09/20/97Detroit loses their second game in preseason against the Maple Leafs by a score of 5-4. Sweet Stevie Y had a awesome break away goal but to little to late. The Leafs will be hosting the Wings tonight and it will be on local tv (UPN 50) starting at 7:30 ET. Game Recaps will not be posted until the regular season begins.

- 09/19/97Slava Kozlov and his agent have agreed on a contract late Thursday. Kozlov will be receiving 5.6 million over 3 years. His salary will increase each year of the contract. This only leaves one Redwing unsigned, Sergei Fedorov. In preseason action Detroit won their last game against the Penguins by a score of 4-1. Tonight, Detroit will host against Toronto at 7:30 ET.

- 09/17/97Last night was Detroit's first pre-season game. The final was 2-0 in favour of Pittsburgh Penguins. Most players didn't play. Scotty spent all of his attention to the defense core during the game by playing the newbies, Ward, Pushor, Eriksson, and Dandenault. In other news, the FOX area network will be showing the Detroit Redwing games this year on cable. PASS was not given the rights this year for Redwing telecasts.

- 09/13/97Ken Holland talked to Fedorov and his agent about his role on the team, (Fedorov didn't demand to be traded). Fedorov is looking for a long term deal worth $6 million a year. Mr. Holland is most likely going to offer a new contract to Fedorov by next week.

- 09/09/97Slava Fetisov will be with the Wings for another year. He signed a new contract worth $1 million for one year. Fetisov will end his career in Detroit after this year.

- 09/06/97For those of us in the Detroit area who are used to watching UPN for our Redwings hockey, there has been a announcer change! Mike Goldberg was fired by the Detroit Redwings organization and replaced with Ken Daniels. Thanks Nick Fuerth for that info

- 09/04/97The Redwings may offer Fedorov $5 million/year to settle the new contract offer with him. This would make Fedorov the highest paid Redwing in history.

- 09/03/97The Redwing fan fest will be taking place on September 21st. Tickets will be going for $5.00 and it starts at noon and ends at 6:00pm. Most of the players should be attending, like other years, and there will be skills competitions and Redwing merchandise there also (Thanks Melissa Paalanen for that info). In other news, Ken Holland and the Redwings continue talks with Kozlov and his agent. It is speculated that a deal will be made by the end of next week.

- 09/02/97September already, sort of depressing, but the new hockey season is vastly approaching. I can't wait to the see the home opener when they hang the STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS BANNER up, it'll be sweet! Anyway, I heard there is a Redwing Fan Fest this year again (I didn't think there would be one, considering how many people would show up this year). I'll let everyone know the date and details as soon as they become available to me. Hopefully I'll be able to go!

- 08/27/97The Red Wings have opened preliminary contract discussions with Sergei Fedorov's agent. No money talk has taken place between Holland and Barnett (Fedorov's agent) yet. Contract talks concerning $$$ should continue later on next week.

- 08/22/97A new report was made yesterday on the condition of Vlady and Sergei! Their conditions have been both upgraded to GOOD condition. Konstantinov is now fully conscious and showing more progressive improvements along with Sergei.

- 08/19/97Well it's a done deal. Vernon is officially heading to San Jose for a new 3 year contract roughly worth 2.75$ million a year. Anyone know anything about Kozlov or Fedorov's contracts?

- 08/16/97It looks like Mike Vernon will no longer be the #1 goalie on Detroit. Detroit has almost finalized a deal with San Jose. Mike Vernon will be traded for 2nd and 3rd round draft picks from San Jose (not that bad of a trade....San Jose is getting sweet picks this year!). Anyway, the important thing is Osgood will be the #1 goalie with Kevin Hodson backing him up for this upcoming season (can't wait!). In other Wing news, the Stanley cup is in Russia today but where is Fedorov? Is he hanging out with his girlfriend Anna?

- 08/15/97The Stanley Cup will be in Russia this time tomorrow. Larionov, Fetisov, and Kozlov are using their days with Lord Stanley's cup, together so they can bring it to Moscow, and grace Russian hockey fans with it's presence. Today, DNA tests were finalized on the marijuana cigarette. The DNA did not link to Richard Gnida, but he still may be charged for driving negligence.

- 08/12/97Well the Wings still have a few more players to negotiate with, one of them Kozlov (I'm still not sure about Fedorov...does anyone know if he has agreed on a contract?). So far Detroit has had no luck resigning him, let's hope things turn out. Other than that there hasn't been much news, partly because the season has been over for quite some time now. Hopefully there will be a update on Vlady and Sergei soon. Haven't heard much about that in a couple of weeks.

- 08/09/97It looks like Kocur will be returning on the checking line next season. He will be getting 450,000$ next year and may possibly be playing the year after depending on his performance.

- 08/04/97Not much RedWing news lately. Although there was a well written article about Vlady and Sergei published in just about every paper around. It explained Vlady's slight improvements such as: squeezing a rubber ball, acknowledging the stanley cup, family members, and the "We are the Champions" song. It also told us Sergei is making great progress. He is able to acknowledge his family, blow kisses to his wife, and is aware of his surroundings.

- 08/02/97Larionov signed the deal today, giving him 5.5 million for 3 years (performance bonus and is being paid 1.9 Million the first 2 seasons and the last season of his contract he'll be paid 1.7 million). There is also a no-trade clause in his contract which means Larionov will be with the Wings for at least 3 years. Detroit, now, would like to concentrate on getting Kozlov to sign a new contract.

- 07/30/97Well, Ken Holland spent most of yesterday on the phone with Larionov's agent. They have agreed on a three-year deal worth at least $5.2 million. Igor Larionov is expected to sign the contract today. This leaves the Wings with 4 free agents to sign still (let's hope they do!).

- 07/29/97If anyone is interested in listening to the Stanley Cup Final game, on the radio, you CAN! Go to my SCORES section and LISTEN to the game, via Real Audio at NHL.com. It's worth just to fast forward and listen to McCarty's goal...WOW! Speaking of listening to the game, I watched the highlight FOX video today, that I ordered from my page. It is worth the purchase! It comes in a free trophy frame along with the video inside (A must buy for a Wingnut!). I watched it today, and it gave me "goose bumps". I want the hockey season to start again....now!

- 07/28/97Well it looks like Vancouver will be getting Messier. The agreement is supposed to occur today, said sources. Messier will sign a contract that gives him 20$ million for 3 years. Detroit could not match that offer. So Detroit is going to put all their efforts into getting Igor Larionov back.

- 07/26/97Detroit signed Bob Rouse to a 1 year deal worth 1.1 million yesterday. This means the Wings avoided arbitration with Rouse.

- 07/25/97Talks between Detroit and San Jose ,concerning a trade for Doug Bodger and Todd Gill for Mike Vernon, have reached a deadlock. San Jose doesn't want to trade them, instead they are offering 3rd to 5th round draft picks. Detroit wants a defenceman in return and are trying for a 1st round draft pick from them.

- 07/24/97The Wings have introduced a new offer to Messier. They are offering him, now, $13.5 million for a 3 year contract. Other sources say that , Vancouver is offering a larger sum of money than Detroit, and Edmonton Oilers are offering him a lifetime deal that includes a management position after he retires (not offering as much as the Wings). Messier will probably make his decision on his future quickly, possibly as early as this weekend.

- 07/23/97The RedWings interest for Messier has turned into an offer! Holland has offered Messier a $10 million US contract for 2 years. Hopefully Detroit will be able to announce an agreement early next week. Although, this means Igor Larionov will not be playing for the Wings next season. A update was made concerning Vlady and Sergei today. Konstantinov and Sergei Mnatsakanov are BOTH out of their coma's. Sergei is able to communicate with staff and is able to perform normal movements. Konstantinov is still a little weary, showing movements and is able to communicate a little. Their condition has been changed to FAIR condition.

- 07/22/97Ken Holland has been talking to Doug Messier (Mark's father), they both agreed that Mark Messier would be a great addition to the team. "His combination of character, skill and leadership abilities would help any team in this league" quoted Holland. Could the veteran free agent center become a Redwing? Should the Larionov plan backfire, Messier could be wearing a red and white jersey. Messier has expressed unhappiness with the Rangers, saying recently that they had displayed "a lack of respect" towards him. It will be interesting to see how this works out.

- 07/21/97I took into consideration what I said about 2 hours ago (message under this one) about the CHAT section. So I worked my butt off and got a CHAT section up! Please give it a try, it's very easy to use (takes about 3 seconds to learn). I'll probably go on later in the day, so maybe I can chat with ya!

- 07/21/97 Well my page has finally made it over the 1000 mark, it's not much, but it's a start. I'd like to thank all the routine visitors (you're the people that help this site happen) and I hope those of you that check out this site for the first time, keep coming back. I hope to get a CHAT section up on my page soon so I, and others, can chat Wings with eachother on my page (I should get this up very soon!...it would be cool). The Player of the Week won't be up until the next season ofcourse. I'm going to have it where the visitors, you, get to vote for the player of the week (I already have the Player of the Week completed). Oh ya, don't forget to sign my GUESTBOOK.

- 07/18/97 Scotty Bowman will remain the bench boss of the Detroit RedWings next season. His new 2 year deal will make him the highest paid coach in the NHL with 1 million per season. In more news, Detroit still wishes to sign Igor Larionov, but other teams such as Chicago, Vancouver and Anaheim are interested also. Larionov still says Detroit is his preference. Also, today was the release day of the REDWINGS STANLEY CUP VIDEO (ad seen above, if you wish to order). Fans and players gathered at the FOX theatre in Detroit to view the highlight tape, it was like "a game like atmosphere" quoted to some local fans. The tape was released for shipping today, so all orders from my page are being shipped today!

- 07/16/97 Red Wings defenseman Bob Rouse filed for arbitration Tuesday, but the team hopes to continue negotiating with him. Detroit's dream of keeping everyone for the next season is becoming more and more untrue.

- 07/14/97 A special report was made today on the tests preformed on Richard Gnida. Now prosecuters are saying that Richard Gnida's tests came out positive for illegal drugs in his blood. If he is found guilty, he can receive up to 5 years in jail.

- 07/12/97 What a vacation! I met with the Wings previous team masseur at my lodge during the week. I didn't even know she went to my lodge (she's been going for several years). She may be the team masseur again, due to Sergei Mnatsakanov's injury. She previously quit because she wanted to open up her own business (and the Russians were too "cocky" according to her) but she will accept the offer if the Wings want her back. Anyways, the status of Vlady and Segei are still serious but Mnatsakanov has regained consciousness; Konstantinov has periods of wakefulness (remains comatose). Also, early this week, Detroit signed unrestricted free agent left wing/center Brent Gilchrist to a three-year-deal worth slightly more than $1 million per season.

- 07/04/97 Well I'm off on vacation for a week. The social gathering of Wing fans at my lodge will have plenty to talk about this year, the main subject- THE STANLEY CUP. No more sorrows this year (except for Sergei and Vlady's untimely misfortune), no more who to trade and who not to, no more doubts, it will just be a celebration. I'll have a great time this year. So check back soon, and keep e-mailing me.

- 07/03/97 The condition of Vlady and Sergei remain serious but stable condition. They are still in the process of emerging from their coma's. Konstantinov can now breath on his own, while Mnatsakanov is still weaning from the ventilator.

- 07/02/97 Martin Lapointe has settled a deal, with the Wings late Tuesday afternoon, with a agreed upon 4 year contract consisting of 1 million a year plus performance bonuses.

- 07/01/97 Things still seem to be uncertain with Bowman's future as Coach of the RedWings. The RedWings want him out, but Ilitch is still debating whether to get rid of a stanley cup winning coach. If Bowman stays the following could happen to the Wings: Ken Holland, future GM (If Bowman leaves) and great assistant GM, may leave the team to seek GM status elsewhere. Fedorov and Kozlov don't care for Bowman much (as do many others), and they will threaten to look for deals with other teams and may do so. Many things are revolving around the decision of Ilitch, I certainly wouldn't want to be in his shoes. Let's hope things work out for the best.

- 06/29/97 BREAKING NEWS- Vlady and Sergei have started to emerge from their coma's early this afternoon. Konstantinov even got out of bed! Both can respond to simple commands. This is great news for all hockey fans. Their condition has been upgraded from critical to serious condition. The Vladinator is back, but there is still a long road of recovery.

- 06/28/97 Well there is a story for every picture. I found this story to be pretty unique! "Around 4 am the neighbors call the Police to complain about the noise from the celebration outside. When the Police showed up they had no idea what they were walking into! Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper went out front to greet the officers and try to settle the matter. The fact being that it was 4 am the Police Officers were not about to buy any sort of story until John Wharton came around the corner with THE CUP in hand and very calmly asked "Is there a problem officer?" Needless to say, these Law Enforcement guys canceled the call for backup and posed for this once in a lifetime photo op."

- 06/27/97 Well it looks like Scotty Bowman will be returning to the Redwings Bench next year to coach the Wings to maybe another Stanley Cup. Vlady and Sergei are showing more signs of recovery but remain in comatose state.

- 06/26/97 Wings are close to completing a contract for Martin Lapointe, they also wish to resign Joey Kocur. Well, web page wise, I finally have a PICTURES section posted. Check it out and enjoy!

- 06/25/97 I've been getting allot of e-mails about the Redwing Stanely Cup champions video available. Well, I have the link available ABOVE. Just click on the image.

- 06/25/97 Doctors have begun weaning Konstantinov from the ventilator. Doctors claim it may take several days or even weeks to wean Konstantinov from the ventilator. Rehab. specialists have now started to work with Sergei and Vlady.

- 06/24/97 An investigation continued Monday into the limousine crash. Possible charges against the limo driver, whose license was suspended, must wait until police wrap up their investigation. Police are awaiting results of toxicology test on driver Richard Gnida. Vlady and Sergei continue to show more signs of improvement.

- 06/22/97 For the third time in four years, the Red Wings selected a Russian, Yuri Butsayev, as their first pick. Butsayev was rated 20th on the European list compiled by Central Scouting Bureau. Also today, Slava Fetisov went to the Redwing/TV star Charity game and dropped the puck for the red carpet face off. He, again, wished that everyone would pray for Vlady, and Sergei.

- 06/21/97 Vlady and Sergei are still in critical but stable condition tonight but both were showing more signs of responding. Calls were coming in from other nations asking if Konstantinov has died, but those ,of course, were rumours.

- 06/20/97 It was brought to my attention that there is a Email address for "get well" messages to Konstantinov and Mnatsakanov established by NHL.com. Send them your wishes with the email address above! Thanks for pointing this out Katie S. of Oregon. Not much to say about the condition of Vlady and Sergei today, except that Sergei Mnatsakanov underwent minor spinal surgery yesterday to straighten his back. The operation was successful.

- 06/19/97 Well, Konstantinov didn't win the Norris trophy tonight at the NHL awards, but the players wished him well and for a speedy recovery. Larry Murphy and Bob Rouse were the only Redwings to attend, to accept the Norris if Konstantinov won. The condition of Vlady and Sergei are much the same tonight, still in a coma state.

- 06/18/97 Things are looking good for Konstantinov and Mnatsakanov. They are showing sign of improvements, such as squeezing the doctors hand, and moving their toes on command. Doctors feel they will come out of the coma state within a few days (at most, a few weeks). They say both of them have good blood flow to the brain, and the healing process is working but there condition is still critical.

- 06/17/97 The condition of Konstantinov and Mnatsakanov are still critical. Now police are gathering the story of what occurred on the night of June 13th. Fetisov claimed he kept telling the limo driver to wake up, which so far, seems to be the most logical story with all the evidence given. Police have already ruled out alcohol and they said the limo was fully functional before it crashed (in other words, the brakes worked!). The driver (Gnida) wasn't even supposed to be driving according to news reports, his license was revoked until '98!

- 06/15/97 Konstantinov is showing facial movements which is a good sign he is heading for the better. Sergei Mnatsakanov (trainer) seems to be in the same condition as Konstantinov showing some signs of recovery. Doctors say a person can recover fully from a head injury like this but the process of the brain healing takes several days. Fetisov is doing fine and may be released in the next day or so.

- 06/14/97 FRIDAY THE 13th HAUNTS THE REDWINGS. Apparently Konstantinov and Fetisov and their Russian trainer were seriously injured in a car(limo)accident. Konstantinov is suffering from life threatening injuries and remains unconscious, the trainer is also in serious condition, while Fetisov is in good condition, only suffering from a bruised lung. I will post more on this tragedy as it comes available to me. Our prayers go out to them.

- 06/12/97 Shanny made a appearance on the Jay Leno show last night and Vernon also made a appearance on the Conan O'Brian show.

- 06/11/97 Yesterday was the REDWING parade! 1,000,000 people showed during working hours to catch a view of the wings relishing their victory. Everyone had fun and it showed why Detroit fans are the best fans around!

- 06/07/97 DETROIT WINS CUP BY A SCORE OF 2-1! SWEEP, SWEEP!
