Dive Site - Shelly Beach |
Shelly Beach
Type: |
Located on the northern tip of North Head, inside Cabbage Tree Bay, is Shelly Beach. At the eastern end of Bower street is a car park from which you can meet and plan the dive.
This dive site consists of a multi-tiered reef running north-east from the northern end of the beach and follows the rocky headland. The reef then falls away to a sandy bottom. Gear-up in the car park and follow the paths to the beach, there is a grassy area before the sand on which you can carry out your final buddy checks. Enter the water from the beach and snorkel out about 15 metres. Submerge to the reef below, your depth should now be around 3 metres. Follow the reef keeping it on your right, examine all the small overhangs, ledges and crevices for marine life. Turn around point for this dive should be at 120 bar and the maximum depth reached would be 10 metres. Return to the beach by keeping the reef, this time, on your left and you will have completed a very easy dive with loads of interesting marine life to study. Back on the grassy area there are showers with which you can wash your gear. Some of the things you may see on this dive include Octopus and Morays in between the rocks, Port Jackson sharks under the ledges, Stingrays on the sand, Cuttlefish in the kelp beds as well as the odd sleeping Wobbegong. Be cautious when approaching any of the above marine life. The dive site is protected and may be dived when conditions are not favourable at other dive sites. It is not usually affected by tides and currents. However be aware of boat traffic, as many boats anchor hear during the daylight hours during the warmer month. This is an excellent night dive location. Did you know that :- Shelly Beach is the only beach on the east coast of Australia that faces west. |
