The first step in your quest for underwater adventure is to become an Open Water Diver.
SSI's Open Water Diver program provides all of the materials a student needs to become a comfortable and knowledgeable diver.
Better yet, the SSI system provides the flexability that students need to fit their busy schedules.
The Open Water Diver program uses full motion video to enhance the training process.
SSI has packaged this video with the manual and workbook for home-study use so students can complete their classroom work in the comfort of their home - at their own pace.
Deep Diver Specialty Course
|
Deep diving is a relative term. In some areas, any depth over 12 metres
is considered deep. In most tropical waters, over 25 metres is considered
deep. Water conditions can affect the psychological as well as the physical
abilities of the diver.
Deep diving is taught only to divers who have the necessary equipment,
skills and experience.
During the course I learnt how to prepare for a deep dive, including
dive planning, equipment needed and preparation, as well as emergency procedures.
I also learnt about high altitude diving and flying after diving. Deep
diving may not be for everybody but definetly requires special training
and equipment.
Stress and Rescue teaches you how to detect and prevent stress in yourself and your diving companions, while developing the rescue skills needed to help another diver. Learn first-hand how to administer immediate care to a victim of a diving accident.
The variety and complexity of diving equipment has increased dramtically.
Today's diver must have thorough training in equipment placement, adjustment,
use and field repair. Equipment designed to increase safety and comfort
can, in fact, lead to serious diving problems if it is not adjusted and
used properly.
This course did not make me a professional in the use and repair of
specialised equipment. It did, however, give me the background and knowledge
needed to make minor field repairsand to use specialised equipment that
I had not used before.
I also learned about the function and design of basic diving equipment
and the fine art of adjusting each piece of equipment. I found this course
especially exciting and of great value being mechanically minded.
The Dive Control Specialist program is one step beyond a Divemaster course, for a DiveCon can also assist an Instructor and teach Snorkeling and Scuba Skills Updates.

The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the skills and theory required for cave and sinkhole diving. Also to train the student fully in the technique of cavern diving, make them aware of the role of the Cave Divers Association of Australia (see CDAA link) and to introduce the concept of environment care.
A cavern dive site is a body of water which has a maximum depth of 20 metres, slight undercuts and/or overhangs, near vertical ascents and where daylight is always visible. (e.g. sea caverns, flooded quarries, lakes, dams and limestone caverns)
Maximum distance from the surface is 40 metres.
Equipment Suitable for Sinkhole Diving
Mask, Fins, Tank (50 cf minimum), Single hose regulator with SPG, octopus, Wetsuit or drysuit with hood, Buoyancy compensator, Submersible dive tables, Deco tables, Slate and pencil, Two good quality battery powered lights, Knife/Cutting device, Tether clip, Watch or timing device, Depth gauge, Reel and guideline (One per pair of divers).
The aim of this course is to train the student in various aspects of deep, freshwater diving directly applicable to sinkholes. This includes dive planning, environmental care and the dangers of deep diving. It also provides an introduction to climbing and belay techniques.
A sinkhole dive site is a body of fresh water which have large passages (no restriction too small for two divers to swim side by side) and which exceeds 20 metres in depth.
A maximum distance of penetration allowed of 40 metres is allowed.
Equipment Suitable for Sinkhole Diving
Mask, Fins, Tank (63 cf minimum) (Twin tanks desirable), Single hose regulator with SPG, octopus (Twin independant system desirable), Wetsuit or drysuit with hood, Buoyancy compensator, Submersible dive tables, Deco tables, Slate and pencil, Two good quality battery powered lights, Knife/Cutting device, Tether clip, Watch or timing device, Depth gauge, Reel and guideline (One per pair of divers).
