Sheffield Steelers

The Steelers play in the Sheffield Arena, which at the time of its construction was the biggest and most impressive such facility to host hockey in Britain. Obviously, the Nynex has since taken this title from it. And like the arena, the team is no longer the undisputed best in the land. Two years ago, they were the grandslam winners. Now, it is not so certain. Last season, they only finished second in the League, but did manage to win the Play-offs. So far this season, they sit in fourth, just one place above BRacknell, they're already out of the B+H and they have played just one Express Cup game, having lost 9-1 to arch-rivals Nottingham. Despite all this, Steelers are a team that should never be underestimated, and I would be surprised if they had not urned it around somewhat by the end of the season.

Steelers are coached by the former GB coach, Alex Dampier, the man who led GB back into Pool A of the World Championships, even if only for a single season. However, many attribute Sheffield’s success to Clyde Tuyl, Dampier’s right-hand man. Players to watch out for at sheffield are Tony Hand (the greatest ever British player), Piero Greco (another candidate for best kepper in the league) and Ken Priestlay (known as the Messiah in the House of Steel). Sheffield are another team with a nice smattering of British talent, although it should be pointed out that none are homegrown players.
