The Team So Far

Well Dave looks to have got together a team capable of going places this season. Having seen team play on three occasions I am impressed by the work ethic and team spirit that is in abundance. The forwards are sharp on attack, put in the the forechecks, and are there helping defend. The defence is at last taking the man out and removing the guy from the crease as well as providing ample support in attack. Of the newcomers I am most surprised by the skill of Norm Dezainde. From his stats we could have expected a guy who was going to spend most of the time in the bin. His face-off skills are good, he is a fast skater, accurate passer and has a lethal finish - who needs the fisticuffs? Sal Manganaro will always score goals. PC Drouin could skate his way round any defence and the three of them provide a fast skating attacking line that will put the fear up any defence this season. Paxton Schulte is being used mainly as an enforcer, but he too possess excellent skating and passing abilities - its a pity they are not more on show. He sticks in and around the crease and will be the bane of many defences this year.

Defensively we have been strengthened by the sheer physical presence of Big Mack - Barry MacKinlay. His passing is out of this world, and his positioning is first rate. I think he's been saving his slapshot for the league! I have never known a Bees defence more resolute in defending, nor more swift on the counter attack. The removal of the red line has really shown us what we can do. Its sad that Frank LaScala has suffered the appalling injury, and we can only hope for a full recovery. He wont be allowed on ice again for about 5 months so when he will start playing again is still not certain. Putting sentiment to one side, Dave should really be on the lookout for a replacement, as we can ill afford many more long term injuries.

Like all fans, I am always optimistic at the start of a new season, but this year there is that little something extra in the way the players are gelling into an effective unit. My prediction is that we will go closer than last season to winning a trophy. Its looking good and no team wants to come to play at the Hive - if we can produce the goods away from home then all teams had better watch out this season
