What Did I Really Learn from Junior Morality?

What a Year! I learned many things from the Junior Morality Class. The class definitely brokered away from a typical theology class in that we had more videos, presentations, and the website. Instead of just saying that God is good and we are bad and we should be barred from heaven, we investigated what it takes to make a moral decision and the circumstances that surround it. The most I took out of the course was when we were not tested. We were able to examine more closely certain related to morality such as just war and medical ethics.

One important idea that struck me this year was the idea of solidarity. On a more emotional level, SLUH has embraced the idea of solidarity outstanding this year with the loss of Chris and Mrs. Leibach. Learning about it in the second semester helped me to see where it is in my life. Another story that I have about solidarity is the night before the AP United States History Exam. I had been studying for about an hour and at 11:00 P.M. before I went to bed, I sent a mass text message to everyone who was going to take the test the next morning. It said, "Good Luck Tomorrow on AP History and may the Lord Bless You." Just the idea of giving words of encouragement to others, especially in our most troubling hour, helps to show our solidarity and unity toward each other.

The other important idea I want to remember from this course is the brief week we covered on ethics, especially medical ethics. In the video, we see that doctors have to use the intense knowledge they know about the human body in order to interpret whether a person should live or not. Medical ethics helped me to see the complexity of making decisions. In about six months, I will be making a decision on where I want to apply to college. The fact that I have a background in ethics will help me to make a moral and conscience decision about where I want to go.

No matter how or what, I will always remember this course. The media always related rather well to the course and your personal stories helped the class to stick. The one thing I regret is that we never had any real earth-shattering or metanoia discussions. The only thing I can remember is a teacher-structured course. I believe the best class was the brief time frame in which we covered the heterosexual issue. Our lack of knowlesge about the topic helped us to go through the topic effectively. I thank you, Mr. Sciuto, for making the class an experience. In the future, just let the classes try to think for themselves more and try not to give people grief if they do not know an answer. Overall sir, good course.
