Wonder and Awe Assignment: St. Louis University High School
When I applied to SLUH in the winter of 2004, I did not know what to expect. But since my acceptance, SLUH has introduced a world I find amazing. Coming to school, something new happens everyday. The people that are around me are some of the best teens in the nation. The teachers that I have are some of the most commended and respected minds in the nation. We have some of the best facilities in the nation. Just coming here and experiencing all of this gives me wonder and awe.
I had some of the best senior advisors a freshman could have. Justin Langan was the national raquetball champion in his age group and was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. Kyle Kloster was one of the best photographers in the metro area and was accepted into one of the most competitive universites in Fordham. Tony Kruse was an all-state water polo goalie. Then there was Timo Kim. He scored a perfect 36 on his ACT, a feat less than .005% of all students who take the ACT can accomplish. He was accepted into Harvard University and was a National Merit Scholar. Learning from seniors of that stature helped me to grow into SLUH.
Now in my class, I cannot begin to describe some of the people we have in our class. We have National Champion Swimmers, track stars, basketball players, soccer players, and much more. There’s Ronnie Wingo, who is one of the top 10 football players for the class of 2009 in the nation. We have geniuses in my class that I cannot begin to describe.
Some of the alumni that graduate from SLUH also shock me. Just this Saturday, I watched on national television a class of 2006 graduate, Paul Chaney, beat four defenders and dive for an overthrown pass in front of 150,000 fans as his team, Iowa, lost to Wisconsin. Just two years ago, I was sitting next to him during track practice as Mister Linhares talked about uniforms. That amazes me that in just two years, he could become such a big star.
Being around everyone in my class, that gives me shock. I do not deserve to be around my class because they are simply the best. Waking up in the morning, I love being able to get out of my bed and driving to one of the greatest high schools in the midwest. Learning from some of the top teachers, being able to play sports on a multi-million dollar turf field, lifting in a brand new weight room, and running on an award-winning track makes me feel appreciative and lucky.
I get shocked going to SLUH everyday. Knowing that when I graduate, I will have so many options going to college and in life, it's just incredible. I love SLUH and the life I will have because of it. Being in the lifetime SLUH community makes me feel honored and blessed because I know that I am in a community that loves me for who I am.
