- Perceiving,

-Definition- To become aware of, know, or identify by means of the senses.

-Perceiving is the first step in the process of knowing.

-Example: I’ve never been to the Pacific Ocean before, but I have read about it and seen it in pictures and movies.

- Selective Consciousness, of all the data we receive, we can only interpret a fraction of it.

-Protective Disinterest, our conscious tends to block out images that we find too disturbing or hard on our mind.


- Categorizing

- Definition, To arrange in categories or classes; classify.

- Once we become aware of knowing, we try to arrange the thought in our brain.

- Stereotype, broad or incorrect categorizations.

- Prejudice, pre-judging a person based on stereotypes.

- Example: When I think of West County, I generally think of rich and wealthy white people.


- Evaluating

- Definition, to judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality of; assess.

- Mystique, a framework of doctrines, ideas, beliefs, or the like, constructed around a person or object, endowing the person or object with enhanced value or profound meaning.

- We assign value to information based on our relationship to it.

- Example: In the district final football game coming up, I will value the Under Armour long-sleeve turtleneck I bought in September instead of those Ray-Ban sunglasses.


- Symbolizing

- Definition, to be a symbol of; stand for or represent in the manner of a symbol.

-Making sure our actions convey our true meaning.

-Connotation, additional meanings of a word.

-Denotation, literal meaning of a word.

- Example: Morality versus Legality, the United States military draft during the 1960’s and early 1970’s, which was morally questionably forcing young teens to go to Vietnam, was a legal mandate.


- Testing

-Definition, to subject to a test; try.

- Our beliefs may be wrong.

- Take advantage of people who have greater life-experience.

- Know the facts about a belief-system.

-Example: After having trained all summer and learned from professional football players, the football camp tested my endurance and ability as a player and corrected many of my mistakes.
