Journal Six: Called to Community
1. What is the one key idea of this chapter Pay attention to the title of the chapter?
The one key idea of this chapter is the call to to be together in communities. In the Acts of the Apostles, Paul went to the ends of the earth to spread the message of Christ. Paul helped to build many communities of Christ in different regions of the world such as Asia Minor, Greece, and Palestine. With missionaries such as Paul, the Christian Church was able to grow and be a community.
2. Write about two major ideas you want to remmeber. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.
a. The Council of Jerusalem was the first of its kind. The heads of the Christian Church had never met before, but a major issue such as the question of whether Gentile Christians would have to first become Jewish joined the Church together. Peter stated that the Gentile Christians should first become Christian while Paul said they should not have to. James came up with a compromise. I want to remember this because whenever I get into an argument with someone, I want to be able to compromise and end it like James did.
b. Saul was a persecutor of Christians in Palestine. While Saul was on his way to Damascus, he had a life-changing event that converted him to Christianity. Before the event, Paul was a committed Pharisee that thought Christians were spreading blasphemy. He even gave the ok to stone Stephen. But Paul was so changed after the experience that he became an important missionary of Christianity. I want to rememeber this because even when I feel that I have sinned badly, I could stil be transformed by the Lord God.
