After the Battle of Cool Springs, the 11th WV was placed into the 8th Army Corps in the Shenandoah Campaign under General Sherman

At Cool Springs, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Army of WV. Brigaded with 34th Mass, 170th Ohio NG, 5th NYHA, and the 116th Ohio.

Colonel Waller Tazewell Patton
KIA at Gettysburg leading the 7th Virginia Infantry. Buried here alongside his brother Colonel George Smith Patton who fought at Cool Springs leading Echols' Brigade with his old Regiment of Western Virginians, the 22nd Virginia Infantry CSA. He being the grandfather of General George S. Patton of WWII fame.
