 OTHER RECORDS  ( 1864 )

Name: Bukey, Van H. Company  “F & S“ 11th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry

Misc Record: Headquarters 11th WVA Infty Vols., Cedar Creek, Va. Dated: 24 Oct 1864
Remarks: (TO) Lieutenant F.L. Ballard, AAAG, 1st Infty Div, Army of WVA, Lieutenant, Having been informed by
the Colonel comdg Div that reports had reached him to the effect that 1st lt. Marlin Park of my Regt had after the
engagement of the 19th inst made remarks tending to blemish my reputation, and that Lt. Park was without proper
excuse, in the rear, on that occasion and being ordered to furnish a report of the same, I have the honor to submit the
following:
I was informed by Private John Bess, Co. “G” (my orderly) that Lt. Park had said that “Col. Bukey was not up to the
breastworks, that he had seen him under the hill, and heard him order the Majot to take command while he (myself)
went down to gather up the stragglers”.  Bess intimated that this was said in such a tone as to cast an imputation not
only upon mu personal courage, but to fasten the accusation, by imputation, upon the Spot (?).
I immediately sent for Lt. Park and demanded an explanation.  He said he did not mean to say that I was not with my
command, although he said he saw me under or on the side of the hill, and heard me give some such command to the
Major: This was in part true, and if called upon to do so I can state the circumstances, but as I am not rendering my
report of the action, I will reserve the statement for its proper place.  I was not satisfied after Lt. Parks statement that the
promiscuous publishing of such an assertion, without explanation or connecting narrative, would not injure me, and the
tone in which it was intended would materially affect the impression it would make upon a listener.
Upon investigation I find that Lt. Park was not in action with his command.  He says he was sick, and had he not
been hauled in an ambulance from a point in the turnpike near the creek, to another point between the 19th Corps works
and Middletown, he must inevitably have been captured.  He went as far to the rear as a point between the lattr place
and Newtown where he met, as I understand, both my my Assistant Surgeons,  successively to each of whom he applied
for a sick pass which he did not receive.  Uupon inquiry of the Surgeons, I find that he was not upon their sick reports,
nor did Dr. Bond previous to the 19th, know of his illness.  I have not heard of or noticed any subsequent illness.
I have above given a correct and impartial statement of the result of the investigation I was ordered to make and
respectfully submit it., I am, Lieutenant., very respectfully, Your Obedient Servant, Van H. Bukey, Lt. Col Comdg 11th
WVA Vols.

Lt. Park 11th WVA delinquent in duty and guilty of an attempt to asperse the character of his Regtl Commander.  Went
far to the rear and not in the action.

Misc Record: Headquarters 11th WVA Infty Vols., Cedar Creek, Va. Dated: 3 Nov 1864
Remarks: (TO) Lt. C.S. Roberts, A.C.M., Army of WVA - Lieutenant, by Para. I, Circular No. 75, War Dept, 22 Sep
1864, it is stipulated that an officer of a 3 years organization recieving a new commission, he may, at his option, be
mustered in for 3 years “or the unexpired term of the organization of which he may at the time be a member: Provided,
that no officer or enlisted man so recieving a commission, shall be mustered in for a less period that 3 years, if, at the
date he presents himself for muster under it, he has less than 6 months to serve”.
As when I presented myself for muster yesterday, I had not less than 6 months to serve, I would claim to be mustered
for the unexpired term of my command, and respectfully request that my muster in rolls to be made accordingly - Very.
respectfully, Your Obedient Servant, Van H. Bukey, Col. 11th WVA Infty Vols
......................................
HQ, Army of WVA, Cedar Creek, Va., 3 Nov 1864 - Respectfully referred to Lt. Col. Frothingham, Com Of Musters,
Dept of WVA - The within named was mustered “illegible” on the 2nd inst as Colonel of the 11th WVA Infty for the
term of 3 years.  He demands that his muster be made for the unexpired term of his regt.  I understand that one company
of his regt goes out some time next month.  Therefore in his new grade, he has less than 6 mopnths to serve.  In his
grade as Lt. Col. he had more than 6 months to serve at the date of remuster.  Would it be proper to muster this officer
for the unexpired term of his organization (11th WVA) - Cyrus S. Roberts, Lt & Asst Com Musters, AWVA.

Misc Record: Headquarters 11th WVA Infty Vols, Near Kearnstown, Va Dated: 15 Nov 1864
Remarks: (TO) Major Saml Breck, AAG, Sir, enclosed please find communication of my own relative to my muster
as Colonel with endorsements of Lt. C.S. Roberts, ACM, and Lt. Col. Jno B. Frothingham, C.M. Dept WVA., --My
interpretation of the para. in the order referred to is, that it has reference to the term of service an officer owes at the
time he presents himself for muster, and not to the lenght of time he would owe service after the muster under the new
commission.  I take the grounds that at the time an officer presents for muster, he is in his old grade, and the reference
to the time of six months service due, means, literaly, to apply to the old grade, as after he is mustered into the new
grade he is no longer an applicant, and is not an officer under the new grade, until after the muster takes place.
Desiring information on this point from the highest authority I Respectfully submit the question to your decision.
Hoping you will find it convenient soon to give the same, I am, respectfully, Your Obedient Servant, Van H. Bukey, Col

Name: Bukey, Van H. Company  “F & S“ 11th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry

Misc Record: Continued from sheet 1 Dated:
Remarks: Monocacy Bridge, Md.; knew him to complain at intervals until discharged from the U.S. service.  He saw
Bukey after discharge about Sept 1865 and occasionally since & that he still suffers with pain in back, which is alleged
to be especially severe when attended with unusal physical exertion or with cold.  He is usually able to attend to light
work such as Superintendent, ect.; disability affects the lumbar muscles and at times extends up spine and around
towards abdomen. - Bonds P.O. address was Davisville, WVA (signed) E.D.J. Bond, late Surgeon 11th WVA Infty
Certified by O.M. Clemens, Clerk Circuit Court, Wood Co., WVA (Stamped Pension Office April 20, 1883)

Misc Record: State of West Virginia, Wood County Dated: 14 April 1883
Remarks: Statement of Van H. Bukey in response to letter of Commissioner of Pensions dated 22 Mar 1883 - For 5 y
years previous to enlistment about 16 oct 61 resided at Marietta, Ohio say from 1855 to 1859 where employed in factory
of the now Marietta Chair Company.  From about 1859 to 1860 engaged in farming on Marietta Island.  In 1860
engaged in Mercantile business at Parkersburg and continued until enlistment.  At discharge engaged with others in
business pertaining to oil leases in southeast, Ohio.  His duties were perfection land titles.  During 1865 was for about a
year in law office of Knowles & Loomis engaged in office duty & study.  About 1866 was purchasing agent for at
Parkersburg with ST. Louis Coal Oil Company until 1867 when engaged in purchase & sale of oil on own account
residing in Parkersburg & Belpre, Ohio across the river.  In May 1868 was Superintendent for the WVA Transportation
Company and moved to Cow Run, Ohio in charge of work until the winter of 1869/70 when transferred to WVA,
residing at Petroleum, Ritchie County, WVA.  In 1872 moved to Volcano, WVA (3 miles distant) and in 1879 to
Parkersburg where remained since.  At the time of injury was commanding a Battalion of Regt, Col. Frost commanding
Brigade.  My horse was killed while crossing a stone wall near the river bank, fell and through me against a tree,
producing a wrench or strain in bank.  On Command moving was unable to ride on horseback and was moved in  an
ambulance.  For some weeks was under the care of Surgeon E.D.J. Bond.  Became better and resumed duty.  Marches
were not long thereafter and suffered comparatively little.  After service violent back pains accompanied every cold,
fequently confining me to absolute quiet.  In work which was never continuously laborious, would be attacked when
bending over and lifting (even slightly) would receive sudden attack which only yeilded to rest and application of lini-
ments and plasters.  This incrreased in frequency so that during my residence at Petroleum and Volcano my ment often
protested against my assuming heavy work.  Finding this to be tahe case I assumed office duties in Parkersburg since
1879.  Treatment was usually the simple remedies above noted, and was with the advise of family physician Dr. W.H.
Sharp of Volcano, WVA.  Had not previously found it necessary to employ a physician for myself, home treatment and
rest usually affording relief.  Only attack other than above was about 1870 or 1871, a slight attack of fever, perhaps
pneumonia when Dr. Sharp attended me.  Duration some two weeks.  Otherwise been able to pursue usual occupation.
Generally, it has not been of character to render hard labor necessary although at various times, especially from 1868 to
1879, I have performed from time to time, an hour or two and perhaps a half day of labor varying as to the physical
exertion.  The recurrances of attacks finally induced me to abstain almost entirely.  Post office address is Parkersburg,
WVA. (signed) Van H. Bukey - Certified by O.M. Clemens, Clerk Circuit Court, Wood County.  (Stamped “Pension
Office April 20, 1883”)

Headquarters 11th WVA Infty Vols., Cedar Creek, Va. Dated: 24 Oct 1864: (TO) Lieutenant F.L. Ballard, AAAG, 1st Infty Div, Army of WVA, Lieutenant, Having been informed by the Colonel comdg Div that reports had reached him to the effect that 1st lt. Marlin Park of my Regt had after the
engagement of the 19th inst made remarks tending to blemish my reputation, and that Lt. Park was without proper excuse, in the rear, on that occasion and being ordered to furnish a report of the same, I have the honor to submit the following:
I was informed by Private John Bess, Co.  G (my orderly) that Lt. Park had said that Col. Bukey was not up to the breastworks, that he had seen him under the hill, and heard him order the Major to take command while he (myself) went down to gather up the stragglers .  Bess intimated that this was said in such a tone as to cast an imputation not only upon mu personal courage, but to fasten the accusation, by imputation, upon the Spot (?).  I immediately sent for Lt. Park and demanded an explanation.  He said he did not mean to say that I was not with my command, although he said he saw me under or on the side of the hill, and heard me give some such command to the Major: This was in part true, and if called upon to do so I can state the circumstances, but as I am not rendering my
report of the action, I will reserve the statement for its proper place.  I was not satisfied after Lt. Parks statement that the promiscuous publishing of such an assertion, without explanation or connecting narrative, would not injure me, and the tone in which it was intended would materially affect the impression it would make upon a listener.  Upon investigation I find that Lt. Park was not in action with his command.  He says he was sick, and had he not been hauled in an ambulance from a point in the turnpike near the creek, to another point between the 19th Corps works and Middletown, he must inevitably have been captured.  He went as far to the rear as a point between the lattr place and Newtown where he met, as I understand, both my my Assistant Surgeons,  successively to each of whom he applied for a sick pass which he did not receive.  Uupon inquiry of the Surgeons, I find that he was not upon their sick reports, nor did Dr. Bond previous to the 19th, know of his illness.  I have not heard of or noticed any subsequent illness.  I have above given a correct and impartial statement of the result of the investigation I was ordered to make and respectfully submit it., I am, Lieutenant., very respectfully, Your Obedient Servant, Van H. Bukey, Lt. Col Comdg 11th WVA Vols.

Lt. Park 11th WVA delinquent in duty and guilty of an attempt to asperse the character of his Regtl Commander.  Went far to the rear and not in the action.

Headquarters 11th WVA Infty Vols., Cedar Creek, Va. Dated: 3 Nov 1864: (TO) Lt. C.S. Roberts, A.C.M., Army of WVA - Lieutenant, by Para. I, Circular No. 75, War Dept, 22 Sep 1864, it is stipulated that an officer of a 3 years organization recieving a new commission, he may, at his option, be mustered in for 3 years or the unexpired term of the organization of which he may at the time be a member: Provided, that no officer or enlisted man so recieving a commission, shall be mustered in for a less period that 3 years, if, at the date he presents himself for muster under it, he has less than 6 months to serve .  As when I presented myself for muster yesterday, I had not less than 6 months to serve, I would claim to be mustered for the unexpired term of my command, and respectfully request that my muster in rolls to be made accordingly - Very.respectfully, Your Obedient Servant, Van H. Bukey, Col. 11th WVA Infty Vols

HQ, Army of WVA, Cedar Creek, Va., 3 Nov 1864 - Respectfully referred to Lt. Col. Frothingham, Com Of Musters, Dept of WVA - The within named was mustered (illegible) on the 2nd inst as Colonel of the 11th WVA Infty for the term of 3 years.  He demands that his muster be made for the unexpired term of his regt.  I understand that one company of his regt goes out some time next month.  Therefore in his new grade, he has less than 6 mopnths to serve.  In his grade as Lt. Col. he had more than 6 months to serve at the date of remuster.  Would it be proper to muster this officer for the unexpired term of his organization (11th WVA) - Cyrus S. Roberts, Lt & Asst Com Musters, AWVA.

Headquarters 11th WVA Infty Vols, Near Kearnstown, Va Dated: 15 Nov 1864: (TO) Major Saml Breck, AAG, Sir, enclosed please find communication of my own relative to my muster as Colonel with endorsements of Lt. C.S. Roberts, ACM, and Lt. Col. Jno B. Frothingham, C.M. Dept WVA., --My interpretation of the para. in the order referred to is, that it has reference to the term of service an officer owes at the time he presents himself for muster, and not to the lenght of time he would owe service after the muster under the new commission.  I take the grounds that at the time an officer presents for muster, he is in his old grade, and the reference to the time of six months service due, means, literaly, to apply to the old grade, as after he is mustered into the new grade he is no longer an applicant, and is not an officer under the new grade, until after the muster takes place.Desiring information on this point from the highest authority I Respectfully submit the question to your decision.  Hoping you will find it convenient soon to give the same, I am, respectfully, Your Obedient Servant, Van H. Bukey, Col

in the oil business after his return from the army.  During this times Bukey complained of weakness & pains in his spine or back that attacked him when he suffered from cold & active physical labor.  It was represented as result of injury received in the army and frequently rendered him incapable of attending to out of doors pursuits.  Since 1870, Col.Bukey has lived in WVA.  Weare moved to Colorado and had not seen Bukey except at long intervals.  Weares P.O.address was Tin Cup, Gunnison Co., Colorado. Bonds tent & ambulance under his care for some weeks a part of time Regt was camped at Monocacy Bridge, Md.; knew him to complain at intervals until discharged from the U.S. service.  He saw Bukey after discharge about Sept 1865 and occasionally since & that he still suffers with pain in back, which is alleged to be especially severe when attended with unusal physical exertion or with cold.  He is usually able to attend to light work such as Superintendent, ect.; disability affects the lumbar muscles and at times extends up spine and around towards abdomen. - Bonds P.O. address was Davisville, WVA (signed) E.D.J. ----------------------------------------------
State of West Virginia, Wood County Dated: 14 April 1883: Statement of Van H. Bukey in response to letter of Commissioner of Pensions dated 22 Mar 1883 - For 5 years previous to enlistment about 16 oct 61 resided at Marietta, Ohio say from 1855 to 1859 where employed in factory of the now Marietta Chair Company.  From about 1859 to 1860 engaged in farming on Marietta Island.  In 1860
engaged in Mercantile business at Parkersburg and continued until enlistment.  At discharge engaged with others in business pertaining to oil leases in southeast, Ohio.  His duties were perfection land titles.  During 1865 was for about a year in law office of Knowles & Loomis engaged in office duty & study.  About 1866 was purchasing agent for at Parkersburg with ST. Louis Coal Oil Company until 1867 when engaged in purchase & sale of oil on own account residing in Parkersburg & Belpre, Ohio across the river.  In May 1868 was Superintendent for the WVA Transportation Company and moved to Cow Run, Ohio in charge of work until the winter of 1869/70 when transferred to WVA, residing at Petroleum, Ritchie County, WVA.  In 1872 moved to Volcano, WVA (3 miles distant) and in 1879 to Parkersburg where remained since.  At the time of injury was commanding a Battalion of Regt, Col. Frost commanding Brigade.  My horse was killed while crossing a stone wall near the river bank, fell and through me against a tree, producing a wrench or strain in bank.  On Command moving was unable to ride on horseback and was moved in  an ambulance.  For some weeks was under the care of Surgeon E.D.J. Bond.  Became better and resumed duty.  Marches were not long thereafter and suffered comparatively little.  After service violent back pains accompanied every cold, fequently confining me to absolute quiet.  In work which was never continuously laborious, would be attacked when bending over and lifting (even slightly) would receive sudden attack which only yeilded to rest and application of liniments and plasters.  This incrreased in frequency so that during my residence at Petroleum and Volcano my ment often protested against my assuming heavy work.  Finding this to be tahe case I assumed office duties in Parkersburg since 1879.  Treatment was usually the simple remedies above noted, and was with the advise of family physician Dr. W.H. Sharp of Volcano, WVA.  Had not previously found it necessary to employ a physician for myself, home treatment and rest usually affording relief.  Only attack other than above was about 1870 or 1871, a slight attack of fever, perhaps pneumonia when Dr. Sharp attended me.  Duration some two weeks.  Otherwise been able to pursue usual occupation.  Generally, it has not been of character to render hard labor necessary although at various times, especially from 1868 to 1879, I have performed from time to time, an hour or two and perhaps a half day of labor varying as to the physical exertion.  The recurrances of attacks finally induced me to abstain almost entirely.  Post office address is Parkersburg, WVA. (signed) Van H. Bukey - Certified by O.M. Clemens, Clerk Circuit Court, Wood County.  (Stamped "Pension
Office April 20, 1883 ")
