On top of the Cool Spring Farm Hill (southern end), Wharton's men faced the Union skirmishers of the 3rd brigade, 2nd division coming out of the treeline (upper middle field), up the hill in the distant center. The union artillery and Officers were posted on nearest mountain range in the background, on the eastern bank of the Shenandoah.
