On this 7th day of June 1869 personally came before
me the undersigned authority Mahala Cody aged 35 years widow of William Cody late of Company C 8 regt Tn Infy and after being duly sworn states in oath that she can not prove her marriage with the said William Cody by a copy of the Church or other public record verified by the affidavit of the proper custodian thereof because no such evidence exists the same having been destroyed in the late Civil War namely the original certificate of marriage authenticated by the affidavit of the officiating minister or magistrate because they received no such evidence of marriage but she can prove by eye witnesses and the person who married them and this is the only evidence of her said marriage with William Cody aforesaid.

Also personally came before me the same time and place Hiram Herd and Franky Eadens citizens of said Hancock County respectable and entitled to credit and after being duly sworn states on oath thus on or about the 20th day of December 1850 they were present and saw Mahala Fletcher as then married to William Cody at the residence of Mrs. Fletchers in Hancock County and state aforesaid.
The said witness Hiram Herd states that he was an acting justice of the peace for said county and married the said Mahala Fletcher as then (now Cody) to William Cody late Sergeant of Co ?C? Regt of Tn Vol Infty on or about the time stated and that we have no interest in this claim whatsoever.
