A Mother's Day RememberedThe retired General sat on the porch watching the spring shower dissipate and the sun creep out from behind the clouds. Sarah Rabb smiled as she listened to her husband wash the dishes from breakfast. It seemed like yesterday when the Mother's Day ritual had stared. From the first one after they were married Harm would bring her breakfast in bed. Then they would lounge around till lunch time when they would get dressed and Harm would take them flying in Sarah to some spot that they would find along the way and there they would spent a lazy afternoon together. There were a few exceptions to this and the first one played out in her mind. Rabb Residence Several years back Harm had just finished cleaning up the dishes as she slid up next to him. Closing her arms around him and laying her head on his strong back. She finally sighed and spoke. "I hope that you wont be disappointed but I would like pass on the flying today." "What is this? The Marine passing on a day in the air. I told you after we were married only a note form your doctor can keep you from flying." He said with a laugh. She smiled at him and laughed along, "Well, sailor." She said as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a note. He looked at her and a mask of worry came across his face. "Sarah what is this, are you okay?" She said nothing and handed him the note, closely watching as his features changed. His eyes looked her over in awe and asked the silent question of confirmation. "Yes, sailor." Was all she said. Harm picked her up and spun her around the room a few times before setting her down and kissing her. After coming up for air their hands linked together over her belly. "I love you, Mom." They modified the ritual that day and couple of times after that. In the following years, Trish would come to visit and on the Mother's Days after that play baby-sitter to her grandchildren. Over the years, the children let Daddy take her out for the afternoon and dinnertime became theirs. Of course Harm had started it when Trey was just a few months old. She smiled at that memory too, Harm standing there trying to teach the 4 1/2 month old how to cook pasta. Currently Mac suddenly realized that she hadn't heard her husband come up behind her. He knelt down and wiped the tears from her cheeks, and then kissed her. "Come on Mother, lets go and get Sarah ready so we can enjoy the family when they show up for dinner." "How much pasta did you buy this year?" she asked as they headed to the barn. "Enough to feed a small army of Rabbs," he said with a smile. "Good I would hate for any of our young to go hungry," she said as she helped him take off the tarp that protected the old plane, and before she could ask, he held up a package containing a brand new fuel line and tossed a second into his seat. She walked over to him, kissed him and then climbed into plane. What a treat Mother's Day had become thanks to her sailor. |
