Geography as a Field of Inquiry

The purpose of geography is to introduce people to the study of the patterns and processes that have shaped how we as humans use and alter the Earth’s surface. Concepts involved include: spatial concepts and landscape analysis to show how humans are organized in living and lifestyle, and how this effects the environment.

Also included are the methods and models geographers use in studying these patterns. The goals included are: use and think about maps and spatial data, understand and interpret the implications of associations among phenomena in places, recognize and interpret at different scales the relationships of patterns and processes, define regions and evaluate the regionalization process, and characterize and analyze changing interconnections among things.

So to put that in some simpler terms, you need to be able to read maps and tell where things are in the world. Know what different scales of measuring things in areas such as hog production, or energy usage. Know and understand how and why things are they way they are in different places, for example culture. Know what makes a region a region and the distinctive characteristics it has. And finally know how things interact and get along with each other.

To put that even shorter, you need to be able to look at a place and know these things: where it is, what kind of region it's in, people’s lifestyles in the area, how they interact with their environment and other people, the resources in the area, and the level and speed of development in the area. 1
