The "Pink" Board     Viva Fortuna, diving, teens

10:05 am saturday march 31, 2001 by Mary
My husband, son, daughter (16 -&- 17) and I will be at Club Viva Fortuna beginning 4/9/01. What should we expect of our hotel? Do I need to pack hair dryers, beach towels or are they provided? Husband and son are certified scuba--daughter and I enjoy snorkeling. Is there a trip all could enjoy? Do we need to book this before arriving? As far as nightlife, what is legal drinking age. Are children under 18 allowed in bars, with or w/out parents? Never been to the Bahamas and are looking to make the most of our days there.

Our family stays there regularly and we've posted info and pics on our website listed below. This should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect of the resort. As quick answers to your questions - hair dryers and beach towels are provided; the dive shop on site is excellent, not sure if there's a combined scuba and snorkel trip and you probably don't need to reserve ahead of time; legal drinking age is 18; those under 18 are welcome.
Hope you enjoy your stay,
Joe

Geographia     club viva fortuna trip report

3/30/01 2:00:29 PM by Theresa
Hi all,
We made it back 3/29/01. It was really windy. I never dreamed they'd have such a storm. Glad everone's all right. We had a wonderful time at the club. Check in went smooth. The food was O.K. We tried a lot of new dishes. The snorkeling was fascinating. I'll never forget that. The girls had their hair braided. Expensive but, you don't get that everyday. We bought some shell neclaces on the beach too. We didn't go off the property. Didn't really have the extra cash for the tours, but the club kept us entertained well enough. I went for the beach anyway. This is the place for families who aren't looking for night life. The only tiny complaint I would have is the beds were pretty much worn out. But, we all slept well, so it didn't really matter. We are simple people from Indiana. I highly recommend the Bahamas to anyone and especially Club Viva Fortuna.
Sincerely,
Theresa

Great trip, exhaustive report to come as soon as I'm caught up at work, maybe this afternoon.

"Paging Mr. Orbach, Mr. Jerry Orbach"
Cross Posting Notice- This review will be submitted to the Bahamas Travel Forum and the Travel Page of the Original Jimmy Buffett Listserve.
I will break this trip down into several topics. This review will be most useful to those who live in or vacation in New England, as comparisons are made to locations in the area. Because I think reviews are more useful if you know a little about the writer, here goes a few words so you can judge whether my opinions and biases might apply to you: I’m in my late twenties, own a condo in Metro West (Boston) and have been married five years with no kids and household income between 60 and 100K (not as much as it sounds like to you Midwesterners and Southerners).
Fast Summary-A great trip that I would highly highly recommend with two caveats: know what you want, and know what Viva Fortuna is. This should go without saying for any travel, but bears repeating.
I. Purchase and Departure-Arrival. We bought our tickets through the Vacation Outlet in the Natick Mall. Departure from Boston at 3:30 on Friday 3/23, arrival back in Boston early evening 3/26. Agent was quick and efficient, no problems. Purchase price totaled $1529 plus fuel surcharge.
The next week our travel documents arrived, and departure had been pushed up to 04:45. Ouch! No longer able to make the run to Logan after a half day of work, we burned a little more vacation time and booked a hotel on Morrisey Blvd. for the night before. Aside from the 02:15 wakeup, there was no problem getting to Logan or getting airborne.
We flew down on Allegro, also with no problems. Breakfast consisted of Raisin Bran, milk, etc. Better than the gray green eggs you sometimes get on domestic flights.
I was impressed with the arrival operation in Freeport. Four of five customs lines had us all through in ten or fifteen minutes, and TNT was waiting to get us into the taxis for the run to Fortuna. We checked in, had a little more breakfast, and headed for the beach. By 09:45 we were on chairs in the shade of a palm tree.
Just after lunch, we went to find our bags. The maid let us in, and called down to the front desk that the room was ready, so by 13:00 we were into our rooms, well ahead of the 15:00 posted check in time.
II Rooms. The room was fairly spacious. Two queen beds, bath with large shower, small chest, closet and balcony with two chairs. The floor is tile, and makes it easy to remove sand. Unfortunately the tile does stain somewhat, but it isn’t the end of the world and beats a wet sandy carpet. We had a partial waterview from B1211, and could turn the balcony chairs to face the beach. There were no bugs anyplace, including an amazing lack of bugs outside considering that it was 80 degrees.
III Food and Beverage. The only relative weak spot. Fair, good, poor, call it what you want, I’d call it School Food. It didn’t kill you over 13-17 years; it’s not going to kill you over four days. I did hear that “The buffet gets old after a week” from some people. We ate one dinner in the main room, one at the Italian place. The Italian place was a nice change, and I would try to get in there every other night. For our third night we went to Churchill’s at Our Lucaya. Our Lucaya is an entirely different kind of operation; dinner for two approached $200, but was very good.
As for the drinks, I thought they were fine. Not a lot of top shelf liquors, and a few people were complaining about a lack of strength. You can drink all you want, so get another one if there isn’t enough booze in it. Maybe they got some crazy idea that the drinks are supposed to enhance the experience, not be the experience. I was surprised at how many people were ordering pina coladas without the run, I’d say close to 50%.
IV Activities and General. This place is best described as "Dirty Dancing" by the beach. There is a wide range of guests, from a group of high school looking girls to older couples, families, and a few college kids. The emphasis is on the outdoors. We had perfect weather, so I don’t know if there is a "Plan B" for rainy days, but it might be tough sledding if not. Among the things I did in four days- two games of beach volleyball, an hour on the archery range, some kayaking, a windsurfing lesson, numerous snorkel trips to the reef, some sailing, one long swim out to the flats offshore, a dance lesson and two evening shows attended.
I can’t say enough about the shows at night. The quality was better than on the cruise that I went on a few years back. Amazing considering that the performers spend most of their day handing out kayaks, leading aerobics, etc. The choreographer, a young man from Mexico City, is very talented. Some of the staff are also good dancers, and the rest are enthusiastic. One fellow’s turn as the Chief from the Village People is beyond description, but I will say that I don’t remember laughing that hard in a long time. The gentleman from Milan is also quite humorous.
If you have swam at Old Silver before July, Sandy Neck or Nauset before August, or Hampton or Old Orchard EVER, you can handle the water in March. Just jump in, you’ll be ok in a minute. They are phasing out the free snorkeling gear because people are idiots. DON’T STAND ON THE REEF, FOLKS, it destroys it! If you don’t want to swim out, snag some shrimp from the lunch buffet, move away from the swim area, and feed the silver fish near shore. They will take shrimp from your hand, and seem fairly toothless.
Do watch out for rays. They are quite beautiful from a bit of a distance, but I saw a large one inshore of the reef, and word was he more or less lives there. Shuffle your feet and you shouldn’t have trouble, if you’re snorkeling check before putting your feet down.
V. Recap Much better than a three or four night cruise, but if you have teenagers, make sure they can handle a few days with no arcade, no dataports, no email or IM’s. As long as you don’t think you’re going to Sandals or Breezes, you won’t be disappointed. My wife, who I love but consider somewhat picky, had no complaints, and that is the highest compliment I can think of.

Bahamas-mon     HELP!!! All-inclusive or not??? Cant' decide?

March 24, 2001 at 19:50:13 by Angela (only4the2ofus@aol.com)
We are planning a 4 day trip in July and are having a hard time deciding whether or not to purchase the option for the all-inclusive or not. Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Neither of us have been so we have no idea on food prices etc... Also, we are debating on staying at Club Viva Fortuna Beach (all-inclusive) or at the Pelican Bay (NOT all-inclusive) the price difference in the two is approx. $130.00pp.
Thanks in advance,
Angela

Hi Angela-
It really depends on what you're looking for in a vacation. If you like going out to a lot of different bars and restaurants to drink and eat, then you probably should choose the Pelican Bay since it's close to Port Lucaya marketplace which has bars, shops, restaurants, and even free nightly outdoor entertainment. If you want to hit the beach, though, you probably have to walk to the beach at Our Lucaya.
If, on the other hand, you just want to relax at at a place with its own (read uncrowded) beach and not have to worry about where your next meal or drink is coming from then do Club Fortuna. Our family stays there regularly and we've posted pictures and info from our trips on the website listed below. Finally, if cost is a big issue, consider that dining in the Bahamas is about 20-30% more expensive than in the States. On a 4 day trip, you could easily blow through that $130 price difference and that doesn't even start to account for drinks.
Feel free to e-mail any questions,
Joe

Dear Angela,
I live on the island and know both hotels/resorts well. Without a doubt I would choose Pelican Bay. It's a really pretty hotel in a perfect location. Right on the canal, next to Port Lucaya where all of the action is and right accross the street from the Our Lucaya Beach. Pelican Bay itself has 2 swimming pools, a refrigerator in every room and all rooms have a view of the canal. The service there is wonderful. I realize that it's not all-inclusive but you can eat quite reasonably right in Port Lucaya.
Club Fortuna is ok but it is so far out of the way. It is on the beach but since no public buses go out that way you'll be spending a lot of money on taxis.
If you have any questions at all you can email me at lilb71@hotmail.com

Ok, could someone please explain to me what the deal is with always making a big point about how Club Fortuna isn't on the public bus route. Janice, I'm not picking on you in particular (Carrie's always making the same point) but why is that so important? If you've decided to do an "all-inclusive" then you already paid for unlimited meals and unlimited drinks right at the resort so you don't need to be traveling to restaurants and bars. It's located right on its own uncrowded beautiful white sand beach so you don't need be traveling to get to a beach. All sorts of watersports, including the best dive operation on the island, are located right at the resort, so again, you don't need to travel. There's nightly stage shows, recreation (pool, ping-pong), and dancing in the disco right at the resort, so again, no travel. The only thing we find ourselves leaving the resort for is for some of the excursions (Dolphin Swim, Booze Cruise, Lucayan National Park, etc.) and, in all cases, these include them coming right to the front door to pick you up and drop you back off afterwards. I just fail to see the reason for making a big point about Club Fortuna not being on the public bus route. Don't anybody take this the wrong way, I just have a hard time understanding it.

Joe,
I would suggest it's a matter of personal preference. You prefer to stay, for the most part, on the resort property since what they offer is enough to satisfy you and your family. I've seen others report the same thing. Some people, however, want to get out and see the island, go other places, and see and do what's there to see and do, besides the resort property. It not being on the public bus route nor within walking distance of anything else is, for those people, important information. I know I'd like to know that before going for the first time. It costs money to take cabs and that isn't part of the all- inclusive. I'd guess it's 7-8 bucks just to get to Port Lucaya. That's $15-16 roundtrip. Double that if you go into Freeport to see the casino, International Bazaar, etc. Maybe in this case that isn't such a big deal since for a four day trip the cost would probably only run around $50, but put someone there for a week and it could be something people would want to factor into their budget. Maybe this doesn't explain it properly, but it's my perspective.
Danny

March 25, 2001 at 21:42:04 Janice (lilb71@hotmail.com)
Dear Joe,
The reason I mention that Club Fortuna is off the public bus route is because I feel that it's a valid point that should be considered when tourists are making their vacation plans.
I realize that some people are quite happy to stay at the resort and never leave the property. However there are others that would like to do a little exploring and it can get a little expensive when staying at Club Fortuna.
I also realize that you highly recommend this resort and love your stays there. I'm happy that you enjoy your vacations there but you must realize that it's not for everyone.
The wonderful thing about these boards is that tourists can view everyone's opinion, get all of the information they can and then make an informed personal decision. That's why everyone's opinion is so important.
It's also important for us to read the trip reports and talk to as many tourists as we can so that we can stay current with our information. Let's face it, things change constantly around here. Chefs change at restaurants, captains change on boats and policies and staff also change in hotels. So we have to keep our minds open, responsive and be impartial when dealing with our tourists.

Thanks so much for all the input! I was aware of the distance between Club Viva and the marketplace etc... but was curious as to the cost of food, taxis, etc... Your post have helped alot, and hubby & I will be making a decision hopefully tonight! We're so excited, so anywhere on the island would satisfy us:)even a tent on the beach!! Now, that sounds great!! Thanks again to all of you for the pros & cons of both locations, as that is the reason I posted here:)

I've tried to read all the posts on the boards, as I'm heading down for four days on Friday. I've decided the following:
1. It seems a little strange that an "unofficial" web site uses much of the same artwork as the official one.
2. The most common complaint seems to be the expensive cab rides. $12 for a 9 mile ride to downtown? YES PLEASE! I'LL TAKE TWO! Not sure where the people unhappy with that are, but compared to cab fare in Boston, that is a bargain.
3. The only thing I'm really worried about is arrival and check in. Originally flight was to leave at 3:30 PM, now 4:45 AM. I hope I'm not stuck at the airport for several hours. Maybe one of those horribly expensive cab rides and $20 to the desk clerk will solve that problem.
4. How bad can it really be? My wife and I aren't big partiers, so not being downtown isn't a problem. We still have several inches of snow on the ground, and I have it on good authority that there is NONE in the Bahamas. The great thing about the net is you have no idea who is doing the postings. Maybe the good reviews come from employees of Viva. Maybe the horror stories are put up by workers from other resorts. A personal friend and former travel agent stayed at Fortuna a year ago and said it was good, since he knows me, I trust him more than any post.
I have worked in the tourist buis., and know well that some people are never happy no matter what. Personally, I could eat hotdogs for four days in need be. But, since I'm with my wife, I needed a backup plan. One of my assosciates in Freeport said that if I wanted "miles of smiles" from my wife, she would make me a reservation for Churchill's for dinner one night. I took her up on it, so I know no matter what, I'll have one good dinner for sure.
Other than that, I'll toss a can of raid in my bag, hope there are no major disasters, and just be happy to be out of the snow.

Can you let me know how it was? Going for 2 weeks in 2/2002 through a timeshare I'll be in the Abacos 1 building.

Mar 19 20:47:45 2001 by Joe
Not sure what you're trying to say with your point #1 but our family is in no way affiliated with the resort other than being happy repeat guests. When we stay there, they give you a folder with info in it about things like excursions, event schedules, etc. I just scanned these to 'steal' the artwork that I used on the 'unofficial' site. It really is just that, completely unofficial.

I have not stayed at Club Fortuna, but I have visited there. My wife and I took a timeshare presentation. It seemed like a nice resort. We didn't buy, but the amenities looked good and the Model was very nice. We ended up buying a condo on the Bay at Port Lucaya. If you like Freeport and ever want to go back, we rent our condo. It is right on the bay at Port Lucaya. It is on the 8th floor overlooking the Bay and ocean. It is private, but is only a leisurely 10 minute walk to Port Lucaya where there are 100 shops and restaurnats. If you want to see pictures, visit www.rentmycondo.com/583.shtml

Hi Matt,
With that kind of attitude, you and your wife will have a great time. Most of the people who post on these boards are NOT travel agents and if they are, they usually say so in their postings.
I'm NOT a travel agent. I live in Montreal, Canada. I have travelled to Grand Bahama Island countless times so when people write to me, I try to give them information from my perspective. If you have read the message boards, done your own research, consulted with your travel agent, and are well prepared without any high expectations, you will have a nice time.
Joe, who posts on this board, is an excellent source for info. about Club Fortuna since he and his family travel there for every vacation.
Have a great vacation.
best regards

My wife and I are thinking about going to the Bahamas later this year. We have been to Nassau twice and Freeport once. We were thinking about Club Viva Fortuna. One thing we look for in a vacation is a peaceful setting. We have read that Club Fortuna is kind of out of the way and this sounds perfect to us. Just wondering if the resort is isolated or just thrown in among a strip of resorts like on Cable Beach in Nassau.

3/18/01 9:40:25 PM by Becky, Kinsey61S@netscape.net
Steve,
Club Viva Fortuna is very isolated, the beach is beautiful and we found it very relaxing. There are no hotels close. The closest buildings were 2 little bars about an 8 to 10 minute walk up the beach. (The right side if you're facing the ocean.) There is an unofficial website by Joe Kusterer at www.geocities.com/vivafortuna/ with some pictures. Good luck, hope you enjoy your trip.

Geographia     Club Viva Furtuna Question For Joe

3/17/01 6:13:48 PM by DiviAruba
What size refriferator is in the rooms that have "partial" kitchens? I got my room assignments for Viva Fortuna, rooms A113 & A103. Are they in the front building or in the two back buildings of building 1? I looked at your resort plan and it looks like there are 3 buildings in Abacos 1. Just wondering, not going until February.

3/17/01 10:55:36 PM by Moe
They don't have refriferators. Also, if your going in February, you missed the boat. It's March now.

3/18/01 6:47:47 AM by DiviAruba
I was not aware that Feb., 2002 has past! I book in advance. It says the time shares have kitchens, usually a refrigerator goes in a kitchen.

3/18/01 8:06:14 PM by Becky
I'm sure you're right that the time shares have kitchens, but I just wanted to set the record straight otherwise. Viva Fortuna does have mini refrigerators for the rooms, but you must request them, there is a five dollar charge per day, and a limited number

Hi Linda-
I answered your e-mail but yes, the time share rooms do have a fridge. It fits under the kitchen counter so it's about 3 feet tall.

Obviously they won't serve the kids alcohol but I don't think that they would keep them out. Keep in mind, though, that the Disco doesn't even open until after the everning shows which means something like 10:30-11:00PM.

Mar 9 07:32:44 2001 by Cal
Your dates must be incorrect. February 2001 is already past. do you mean 2002, or do you mean another month in 2001. ClubFortuna is all inclusive and is very isolated. I have heard mixed reviews on it. Some people like it, some don't. some people have had trouble with service there and some people have had trouble with bugs in the rooms, others have not. If you want to be closer to the activities why don't you try the Lucaya area. I have a condo in Port Lucaya which is much nicer than Club Fortuna and rents for less. If you want more info, E-mail me at calm@lilly.com. If you want to see pictures, visit www.rentmycondo,com/583.shtml

You're right, it's 2002. This is through a time share, so it's only about $700. per person per week all inclusive. I read your site, you can't beat that.

We just returned yesterday (first trip to GBI) from a 7 night stay at Club Viva Fortuna. (An all inclusive resort) We loved the GBI, and found the Viva Fortuna suited us well. It's a little off the beaten path, but if you are there mainly for diving (great dive shop)snorekling or watersports, it's great! If you're looking for a little more nightlife you may want somewhere closer to (or on the bus route to) town.

Dear Marie,
The weather in March is generally pretty good. We can still get some cold fronts though at this time of year so bring a sweatshirt just in case.
Club Fortuna is a nice resort. The rooms aren't fancy but they are clean. It sits on a gorgeous beach and they have lots of activities for you to do there. Scuba diving, watersports, discos etc. The meals are all buffet style, simple but quite good.
Only problem witht this resort is that it's a little far away from everything and there are no public bus stops. So, you must take a taxi or bicycles everywhere. Most tour operators do offer free transportation with their tours so that will help a lot. Taxi fare into Port Lucaya (where the nightlife and shopping is) is about $8 and to the casino I would guess about $12 - $15.
If you need anymore info I would be more than happy to help. You can email me at lilb71@hotmail.com. I can also give you an idea of what tours and activities are available on the island.

Hi We're going to club viva fortuna 4-17 to 4-24 with 2 kids ages 12 and 7. Hopefully it is a great resort for us and kids. I've been reading the comments from people who have gone and it seems good.

Has anyone been to club viva fortuna recently. I have read mixed reviews about the place. especially about it being run down, far from everything and the taxis being very expensive. Is this stuff true?

Dear TC,
Club Fortuna's rooms aren't luxurious but they are decent. There is lots to do at this resort including, kids camp, scuba diving, nightlife, watersports etc. It is a little far away from everything. The taxis do give their guests reduced cab fares though. Also, most tour operators on the island do offer free transportation so that helps out a lot. They do have buffet meals that are quite nice. Don't look for an intimate dining room though. Their restaurant is covered but it is outdoors.
I live on the island and if I can give you any more info please feel free to email me directly at lilb71@hotmail.com

I stayed at club last september, it is not a luxury resort and a bit out of the way, there is not much to do except watch the shows in the evenings, the rooms vary, some are nice others are in need of decoration, we stayed in the "cays" rooms. these were nice but a bit far from the centre of the complex, fine if you want a quiet time. I suggest you email and request one of these rooms if possible. Another thing, they are not very organised regarding checking in and delivering your luggage to your room so i suggest you take your own to the room or leave it in reception, change into your swim wear in the rest rooms and start to enjoy yourselves and wait for the checking in que to go down.
If i can help any more feel free to email me.
