Kate and Glen:
I also hope that you have good weather! I don't think it rains anywhere like it does where you live! You should have a blast on GBI! I don't know about Club Fortuna except that my husband used to sell timeshares there. But, I do have the email address for a car rental company there and I think tha would be the best deal for you guys since Club Fortuna is away from everything and the taxis are rather costly. If you are interested in renting a car, you could check with these guys to see if they have anything available when you will be there! It is Brad's Car Rental and email address is bradscar@mail.batelnet.bs
HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT TIME--I'LL BE THERE NEXT MONTH!
Peace, Flamingo

My wife and I are leaving tomorrow for some fun in the sun. Can anyone give me information on the cost of a taxi from Club Fortuna to Freeport? Also, any information on the diving? I have been to the web site: http://www.geocities.com/clubfortuna and found it helpful, but I could use some additional information. The rooms page is not currently working, can anyone tell me about the ocean front rooms? We will not be arriving until 11pm. Is there anything we should know about late arrival? Any and all information is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

just returned today from club fortuna (GBI) spent 2 weeks of going crazy with the mosquitos, everone was tearing themselves from the mossies, the shop ran out of mossie spray,we all looked like we had chicken pox,i tell you it was really bad even the locals took to carrying a can of mossie spray with them.Must say that the island is very clean, loved the beaches and the people. As for Club Fortuna it was okay, food was not too bad I suppose but not good either, entertainment was good, rooms ok.This hotel is really out of the way so you need to hire a car or go crazy. Even so I had good weather and it was quite nice

IS TOPLESS AND BOTTOMLESS ALLOWED ON CLUB VIVA FORTUNA PROPERTIES?
SHOULD WE EXPECT THIS KIND OF THING AT THIS PROPERTY?

Sep 12 19:31:04 2000 by Joe, joekusterer@yahoo.com
Technically, I don't think it's allowed anywhere on the island. I've heard people talk about finding a secluded beach and going for it, but in our times at Club Fortuna, I've never seen it. I wouldn't expect you'd see it either.

Looks like our Club Fortuna "Troll-of-the-Month" club is alive and well. About once a month someone posts a rant alleging all sorts of terrible things about the place. These rants always seem to have several things in common...
- I know 'spellin and grammer aint not important' but these are usually noticeably worse than average in these respects.
- There're usually no hard facts, just a long laundry list of rumor and innuendo. Often times, in fact, they're stories from a 'friend of my sisters mother-in-law' or some such.
- They're usually posted to the 'wrong' board. This site has a board for Grand Bahama Island specific posts which would seem more appropriate.
- They're often (not apparently in this case, though) posted anonymously and, when challenged on the boards, have never once responded.
- And finally, for some reason or another, they always seem to claim that somebody got 'food poisoning'! What's up with that?
Anyways, decide for yourself whether to give any creedence to these posts, but do so after reading all the posts on all the boards. If anybody wants facts, including plenty of photographs, about Club Fortuna, check out the website below.

Hi Joe,
I noticed the same thing about these reports on Club Fortuna cropping up...and remember reading about the alleged "food poisoning" too. I usually tell people who email me about Club Fortuna to contact you since you and your family have stayed there regularly and like it.

Ditto, ditto, and more ditto. We have been travelling to GBI for 16 years, and although we have never stayed at Club Fortuna, we have visited and toured the place with very gracious resort personnel showing us anything we wanted to see, and have heard great reports from many people we've run into on the island who were staying there. Consider the source.

I WENT TO CLUB VIVA FORTUNA IN GRAND BAHAMA ON THE 10/01/2000. I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT IT WAS THE BEST HOLIDAY THAT I HAVE EVER BEEN ON. THE BEACH WAS THE CENTRE OF ALL GOINGS ON AND THERE WERE BEACH GAMES AND MANY WATERSPORTS AVAILABLE. THE COLOUR OF THE SAND WAS AMAZING - PURE WHITE AND THE OCEAN A GORGEOUS BLUE AND GREEN. THE STAFF AT THE RESORT WERE WONDERFUL WITH THE BEST IN HOUSE-SHOWS I HAVE EVER SEEN FROM ON SITE ENTERTAINERS. AND THE FOOD, WELL I PUT ON A STONE WHILE I WAS THERE. THE FOOD WAS GORGEOUS WITH MANY DIFFERENT DISHES AVAILABLE AT EVERY MEAL-TIME.

Bahamas-mon     Discovery Cruise, Club Fortuna, Dec. Weather

September 09, 2000 at 10:54:43 by Emily (MleSMoore@aol.com)
Hi,
I am about to send in MORE money on a package I bought years ago for 2 nights in Fort Lauderdale (Ramada Plaza Hotel), a Discovery cruise to the Bahamas and a stay at Club Fortuna. I have read many "mixed" messages about these places and am a little nervous about sinking more money into this vacation through CMG (Cruise Marketing Group).
Has anyone visited these places (or cruised) RECENTLY and what did you think? How will the weather be in the beginning of December? I really want to go but i am afraid it is going to be a flop with these arrangements.
Thanks in advance for any help! This is a really great b-board...Mle

Don't know much about the first two you mention but you definitely cannot go wrong with Club Fortuna. We stay there regularly and think it's great. For info and pictures, check out the web site below.

The weather should be fine in early December...the minimum temperature for December is around 63/64 degrees and the maximum is around 78. You should be able to swim but not expect it to be super warm. Regarding the Discovery Cruise...it's an okay way to get over to Grand Bahama...it's not a luxury cruise line but it serves the purpose. They have meals while you cruise (buffet style), entertainment and also the casino. So the ride should go pretty quickly. The downside is that it is very disorganized at the harbor when you get to Grand Bahama. You have to wait a long time for your luggage...so just be patient. If you know what to expect in advance, you'll be fine. Enjoy your trip. Joe gave you his answer on Club Fortuna...you won't be disappointed in your accommodations.

October 08, 2000 at 10:16:08 by Joe (joekusterer@yahoo.com)
We were there in Aug 1999 which is before your stay and we were there in June/July 2000 which is since your stay. In fact, in all the times we've stayed there we've seen one roach - and it was dead.
We prefer the tile floors - towels and beach chairs are fine. As far as the A/C, we thought one of our rooms wasn't cooling well and someone was there inside a half hour and had it tuned up great. Even taking into account the fact the one of the three building groups (Cays) is not on the beach, over half of the rooms at the resort are 'Ocean' as opposed to 'Garden' view. And we like the dining atmosphere, birds and all - it's not like they're all over the place - just a few and those provide nice background with their singing.
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. It seems like the things that you disliked are some of the exact things that we like about the place. Also, I think you're overreacting a bit in writing off the whole Bahamas.

Geographia     Cash Machines

9/4/00 8:34:04 AM by Becky (bec_hulley@yahoo.com)
As the dollar/pond exchange rate is low at the moment i was thinking of just withdrawling cash from cashpoint machines when we get there. Does anyone know if there are any machines/banks near to Viva Fortune Beach or if they are readily availiable in Lacaya and freeport??

9/4/00 9:50:11 AM by Marilynn (pcltd@mail.batelnet.bs)
The only cash machine I know of is located in the Casino at the Bahamia downtown. One of the Banks may have one but they are mostly downtown also.

9/4/00 11:58:01 AM by Barbara (barbara426@yahoo.com)
I just returned from Grand Bahama two weeks ago and The Lucayan Reef Village was in the process of installing a cash machine in the lower lobby of the hotel right past the tour desks. The ATM was there but was not operating at that point in time. I'm not sure if they have it up and running yet...sometimes it takes a while for Bahamians to get things going. If you are staying at Club Fortuna, I would say that you wouldn't want to spend a lot of time going back and forth to any cash machine. Although you most likely won't need a lot of cash since you are staying at an all inclusive. Most places take credit cards as well. I would take enough cash to get by, your credit cards and then if you are in a bind you can always head over to the casino or The Lucayan (if their ATM is working) for any additional cash.

9/4/00 3:08:08 PM by Janice (lilb71@hotmail.com)
Dear Becky,
I work in the tourist industry on Grand Bahama and you're talking about making the same mistake lots and lots of other tourists make. Granted you are staying at an all-inclusive resort but you will still need cash or travellers cheques. Club Fortuna is quite a ways from the only international banking machine on the island which is at the casino and not all tours take credit cards. Not to mention the fact that in stores and for tours there is a 5% fee for every time you use your credit card. If you have a Visa you can get a cash advance at the Royal Bank in Port Lucaya but only during regular banking hours. That may be an option for you but I wouldn't count on going to a bank machine every day. It can be a real hassle and you'd be in real trouble if the day you want it it's not in operation. Believe me, it does happen.
If you have any more questions about the island please feel free to e-mail me directly at lilb71@hotmail.com
Janice

That is a good idea. ATMs are too far away. But get small denominations--$25 and $50. There is sometimes a small fee to cash them but it is minimal.
