Corina Ungureanu, a two time world and European champion, will be on the cover of the third issue of the Romanian edition of Playboy magazine. "My collaboration with Playboy represents a special way of ending my career. I hope my appearance in the magazine will prove everyone there's more to Romanian gymnastics than endless training hours and medal collections", Corina said.
Corina is not the first gymnast to appear in the magazine. Other famous sports stars who posed for the magazine include Katarina Witt and Svetlana Khorkina, and the first Romanian to pose for playboy was Aurelia Dobre (she appeared in the dutch edition). "I'm happy to be mentioned alongside these big name stars and I hope everyone will understand why I did this. I hope there won't be any negative reactions (comments), especially in the sports world."
Actually, the opposite has already happened. Romania's head coach, Octavian Belu, was shocked by the decision of his former gymnast. "I'm surprised by Corina's gesture. I don't see any reason for it, nor the perspective (implications, I would assume). At least she could have abstained from doing it until she started to be forgotten.", he told sports newspaper ProSport
The gymnast's reaction generated more questions. "Octavian Belu is not qualified to judge my actions, as long as he doesn't have the right to do so. As far as his comments about my lack of decency go, I would ask him to abstain from further comments. I don't think he'd want me to start talking about his decency as a coach and a human being. I would ask him not to provoke me, because I'm no longer a member of the National team, and he can't
control all my comments."
